As the sightings of the African Rüppell’s Vulture continue to grow in Europe, especially in Iberia, we at the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) intend to monitor the situation by equipping individuals with GPS transmitters to help determine how long they stay in Europe and where they come from. A couple of weeks ago, we equipped the first Rüppell’s Vulture with a GPS transmitter in Portugal, and the bird has already left for Africa.

It was very fascinating to see the flight path of one of the greatest birds in the sky. I congratulate Vouzela for that big jump between two continents and wish for a safe journey onward! Also my thanks go out to you; you're doing a great job with the conservation to these magnificent creatures and I am happy you show us these informative videos!

Amazing (and important) work. The better we understand a bird's migratory patterns, the more we can do to help protect them.

Very impressive, thank you for sharing. As far as I could see, the distance over the water was 18 km and it took 17 Minutes flight. That results in approx 64 km/h. Flying over the water begins at an altitude of 1196m until 166m. Resulting in 1030m of gliding. It would be nice to know, if Vouzela did this with a pure glide.

Very well-done. Such a great idea and thanks for all you efforts. Let's hope the declines of these magnificent creatures can be reversed.
