The ice in the arctic is melting, revealing huge amounts of fossil fuels, rare earths and new shipping routes. And the rush to secure these has already begun. Will countries continue their race for economic and militaristic advantages or will they finally work together to solve the global problem of climate change?

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our channel explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

@aosbc4294
@aosbc4294 Год назад
Yes and no. Floating sea-ice already displaces water so melting only changes states from solid to liquid and does not increase overall sea level. However, glaciers and large formations of ice on land, such as in Greenland, certainly will have an affect on sea-level rise. Sea level rise itself will certainly be an issue for coastal low-lying cities and territory and will likely result in long term mitigating projects and some cases retreating infrastructure to higher ground over long term. There are also numerous other issues of such large quantities of fresh water being introduced into the world's salt water dominant oceans though and in many cases the outcomes are hard to quantify and predict!

Through grafting, people can taste the same apple that was grown in ancient Rome, we have transported the jungle fowl and kept its mutations and we have protected many animals that would be slaughtered by predators. With solar and wind tech where it is today it just seems silly to invest in new oil and gas wells. It’s like going to the store to buy a new phone and opting for a rotary dial land line instead of a smart phone. I get that there are very serious energy security concerns right now in some European countries, but building a new gas well in the arctic which won’t come online for several years isn’t going to help with this winter. @@stevem8318 This is not true. Firstly, we’ve brought Co2 levels to the highest point in approximately 4 million years, highest in human history. After greening until the year 2000, research has shown that the earth has’s greening period has reversed, it’s now getting browner. We’re already seeing ocean acidification due to rising co2 and higher ocean temperatures. We’ve already seen issues with that in regards to food supply; crabs in Maine and Alaska have either attempted to migrate northwards to colder waters or have died trying. That is just a small example of what ecosystems on our planets have had to deal with, after being subjected to the highest levels of co2 in 4 million years.. in just 150 years time. What we need is stability. Earth’s climate for all of recorded human history has been remarkably stable, a range of 1-2C of change ever since the last ice age ended over 10,000 years ago. We clearly have the power to alter Earth’s climate, so why can’t we just keep it where it was? That way we wouldn’t have to worry about ecosystem die-offs from warming or cooling.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982 is the main foundation of legal order, according to which the five polar states bordering the Arctic Ocean have the right to establish a territorial sea up to a limit of twelve nautical miles and an exclusive economic zone of up to 200 nautical miles. Defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans; it establishes guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources. To date, 167 countries and the European Union have joined the Convention. This treaty both codified customary international law and established new law and institutions for the ocean. The United States did not ratify UNCLOS because of fears among conservative Republicans that it would undermine U.S. sovereignty by transferring “ownership” of the high seas to the United Nations.

However a third reason is that o also know none of my peers would either. Everyone’s so wrapped up in their own life and stories to see what’s happening, and life is still to “comfortable” for most to feel the need to step up. Everyone knows something’s wrong and is deep down unhappy in some intangible way, but most just put it in a small box in the back of their brain and move on. It’ll be too late by the time those boxes are forced open it afraid.

So they cannot imagine what world will be. - Individual action is important but there never would be enough (I have been trying 25 years, I know). I still try to bore people to death by bugging them about climate. - You need to stay safe, mentally and physically to make difference. - Most important: Everything evolves around finance. So, if you are not interested in business, or have -ve business acumen like me, you need to invest part of your investments in climate helping elated companies. If you are in relevant field, you can get climate job. There are LOT of them now, just search for climate jobs. The BIGGEST difference can be made by starting a business which does that business, any business, sustainably. Climate finance will keep on rising. But even then it's much better to get with few like minded people and start something together so that you are safe. Ideally we want to reach to a position that even if we find oil 3 feet deep, anywhere, it stays there because we don't want it. Hope this helps. Best.

Not as simple as I think? Eh… I think that the nations (more accurately, those in power, in the nations) will want to further short term economic profits, and exploit the resources, climate change be damned! …with maybe _some_ concern for trying not to look too bad, to the public. That's pretty damn simple, and I fail to see how you could possibly present anything, that would say otherwise.

Interesting, but nothing new. DW doesn't define what it means with the word 'arctic'. The arctic area is defined is several ways; (1) areas north of the polar circle - which leave many 'cold areas' outside the defined area, (2) areas where trees doesn' grow, and (3) areas where the mean summer temperature is below 10degC. Following (2) and (3) the arctic area will, in the foreseeable future, get smaller and smaller, - and eventually disappear (?). The polar circle also varies a bit - but that is for other reasons than climate. So why not plan for what seems to happen (regardless what we do). We could get another Maunder minimum - that gave us 'The Little Ice Age, But will it have the same effect as it had in the pre-industrial period of 1645 to 1715, - when the number of people - with modest 'climate consumption' - was just a fraction of what we have today.

I think the world will soon need ultra giant Air Conditioners if it doesn't already have them and for the part of them that puts heat into the atmosphere gets hot, Maybe that part should be kept in a giant freezer. I don't know. Sounds complicated. The heat exhaust part would contribute to global warming but if that part was kept mixing with cold in an enclosed space, Maybe only cold air would be going into the atmosphere from the giant air conditioner/s and would help to combat the global warming. Also I don't know if you could harness the heat exhaust from the giant air conditioner/s and convert it into energy and electricity.

Americans have been drilling for oil in Alaska for several decades. It transports crude oil through pipelines that cross Alaska from north to south. I know this for sure, I read it in the American magazine National Geographic. It was an article about caribou migration and how the pipeline route obstructs the animals' path. DW should inform itself better and stop misinforming.

The way the sea and air currents work in the Arctic, means that the ice is pushed up against Canada and the northern tip of Greenland. The rest of the Arctic is relatively open and navigable in August and September, and that window of navigability will increase over time. Furthermore, most of the oil and gas resources are in Russia and Alaska both offshore and on land, and offshore in Norway and in the Bering Sea. Canada and Greenland do not have the right geology for oil and gas, except for a small part of Canada next to Alaska.

I plan on doing my Masters in this specialization. As a Canadian I couldn't find a program specializing in this type of global affairs or geo policy in the western hemisphere. I have to travel to Finland, this silent battle is extremely fascinating in 20-30 years as Russia/China are so far ahead in planning infrastructure and port holdings to create dominate trade routes blocking out the need for western interference in shipping within the global east. And nobody notices how big of a problem is. Its a huge rabbit hole, glad at least some universities offer it, even if i have to travel to Finland.
