I had a 85 and 86 both fast. The 86 was very fast ported head milled pipe 38mm carb. The 85 and 86 were very light machines.

Its true, they're rippers once you start modding the 85/86's.

Love the video I was wondering what size sprocket are you running front and rear I have a 86 lt250r and it has stock gearing 12 Front 42 Rear I wanted to bump up the front sprocket to a 13t wondering what's your opinion on that?

Go up one tooth like you say. I did that back when I had one.

It’s cheaper to change front sprockets but not really recommended. Puts chain closer to case if it derails or breaks it could cause more damage. I always change gearing with rear sprockets. Instead of going higher ur will go smaller with rear sprockets. 3 teeth on rear sprockets is about equal to 1 tooth on front sprocket. Another advantage is smaller rear will give more ground clearance less risk of damage. I always use none O ring chains for top performance. On a 125 u can really feel the power difference it’s amazing. O ring chain great for longevity but will cost some performance. I just buy cheap parts unlimited chains 4 chains is about same as one O ring chain. Idk if i get more time out of 4 chains compared to one O ring but id bet 4 chains will last longer than one. For most people unless running a 125 O ring probably way to go. I did mined a little more maintenance for a little more power. Sometimes gearing up will even put u in a better gear ratio all way around. Like say racing threw whoops 2nd gear is to low for u but 3rd to fast. Gear up after second gear is perfect through the whoops rider preference of course.

Which year had the best low end/mid range that would be most comparable to a TRX250r? Had a 250r many moons ago and was a great trail rider but they are going for crazy money.

The 87+ lt250r's have MORE low end and midrange than a trx250r. I also have a trx250r and prefer the Suzuki's!

Hey what is your opinion on the 1986 DG expansion?
@PGG909
@PGG909 Год назад
We had one on the first 86 we bought -- it sounded great with the DG, but didn't notice much of a performance increase.

@@PGG909 I baught one for a very good price and it’s in good condition that’s why I ask . Sorry I’m doing this 😂 but on a scale of 1-10 how much of a power increase from a stock pipe do you think the DG gives it, and the fmf gives it . And is the power difference switching to a fmf really that much?
@PGG909
@PGG909 Год назад
@@Yavi250r hard to say… the dg does sound great and some of that “power” with any pipe is more sound than actual power. I’d say the dg is a 5 and fmf is a 7 or 8. Really you need more than just a pipe on a 85/86. You need more compression, bigger carb, and some porting.

Don’t change the pipe on a stock engine ….after some engine mods then do the pipe

Hey man thinking about trading my kdx 220 for a 85 model to race quad motocross and I have a few questions what suspension and a arms should I get and what engine mods should I do, I appreciate the video man.

Any engine upgrade tips for a 85/86 engine ? I want to build mines up . I have a stock carb , stock pipe , and what looks like stock reeds. When I opened it up I could see that someone had “ported” it , basically smoothing out the edges , but nothing extreme .

Fmf pipe wakes the 85/86 up a lot. Next do a genuine Mikuni tm38 carb. $120 on Amazon. Have the head milled .020” at a machine shop… will cost you about $30. Do all that and she’ll fly

@@PGG909 when you you say shave it down .020 , that’s .5 mm , isn’t that too little? I’m new to this so I really don’t know what a lot or a little is . Why wouldn’t I be able to do a full mm
@PGG909
@PGG909 Год назад
@@Yavi250r At .040 you might run the risk of piston hitting the crown of the cylinder head. Best case you would need to run 110+ race gas at all times. Also -- too much compression takes away top end at the expense of low-mid range. There is a point of deminishing returns. .020-.025 is a good happy medium where you can still run 93 octane with some Octanium booster and be fine.
