Forgotten Ffestiniog - The Railway Lost to the Lake
Join me as I visit a long disused railway line in North Wales as we visit 3 key locations along the former Bala Ffestiniog Railway.
We begin our explore by visiting a rarely seen tunnel, just 76 yards in length but with a real beauty inside, just East of Bala.
Next up it's off to look at where the railway was lost to the lake. A village flooded behind a dam. What railway history does it still hold and can we discover any?
Finally it's off to the stunning Cwm Prysor Viaduct.

Religious experience watching that. Used to spend my childhood summers in Wales (Tycanol) on my maternal grandfather's farm (now a campsite), and the gurgling of the brook under the viaduct took me back to the primal memory of the brooks on the farm. Amazing...Being from a deprived area of London, I'd never experienced the countryside like I had at the farm. The Welsh countryside was an other-world experience. Thank you for the adventure...and taking me back.

Great video, just a brief comment on the history of the reservoir. In 1957 Liverpool Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament to build the reservoir which involved the removal of the residents of the village and valley. It was fiercely fought, but to no avail. The Act did make provision to reroute the line, but British Railways wanted to close it. Liverpool did pay for a rail link in Bleaneau Ffestiniog to join the Conwy Valley line (still running today) to the top end of this line for access to Trawsfynydd Nuclear power station which was being built, but this is another subject! Liverpool City Council did eventually apologise in 2005 but to mixed responses. The pushing through of the act did give impetus to the desire for Welsh people to have a greater say in their affairs. I am from Liverpool by the way!

Yes the railway from Bleaneau Ffestiniog down the Conwy Valley was built by the LNWR in the 1880s but was not connected to the GWR line from Bala to Bleaneau until 1963 after the Bala line was closed and flooded. This gave access to the nuclear power station at Trawsfyndd to the Conwy Valley line. This link was what I was referring to.

@@williamgrisenthwaite6557 There was a connection in the 1880s - you can see it on the 1899 Ordnance Survey map. Maybe the 1963 realignment was just less tortuous and more suitable for through trains

The connection on the OS maps from the 1880s between the LNWR line down the Conwy Valley and the GWR line to Bala was the Ffestiniog railway narrow gauge. The standard gauge line was put in to allow nuclear flask trains to get from the North Wales coast line to Trawsfyndd power station. This almost certainly saved the Conwy Valley line from closure.

This channel is one of the main reasons I've given up on 'network television'; I won't lie, there are a few other disused railway and urb-ex YT channels I watch, but this one is a cut above the rest - this video had me hooked from start to finish; And boy oh boy, the absolutely STUNNING still images and haunting music just captures the feel perfectly, as if I was virtually there. Great bit of infro on that part of Wales. I lived in very close to Brybmo Steel works { i think it was the best steel made in UK ?] Steel work is now working in China. There is a great book on this railway by Martin f Williams and Derek j Lowe, It is still for sale. The drone images help a great deal Thank you for your hard work

Makes me feel old; I've seen trains from Bala in the old Blaenau Ffestiniog Central station, I went through the valley a number of times before it was flooded, and I saw the dam being built (and the new road around it) Lovely video

Very amazing!!! Everytime i watch your videos i think how here in the US our lost railways are gone forever, taken over by development with no trace that it was there. The UK has so many gems and its very amazing how many lost railways can be found and explored 50-100 years after its gone. Thank you for another great video and i look forward to more as always!!

Would be nice one day to get the line back from Llan to Ruabon(not impossible) and the other way Corwen to Bala Town, and who knows...beyond to Trawsfynydd. Nothing is impossible.

I first discovered some railway features on this road in 1963 on a motorbike trip from Coventry to Barmouth. It puzzled me many times in later years towing our caravan to Porthmadog. You have answered many questions many years later . Thanks Ant keep up the good work.

Excellent video filled in some of the gaps when I visited the area when I walked from the viaduct towards Ffestiog about 10 years ago. If you carried on further you find yourself on a ledge high above the valley floor with some breathtaking views. The two bits of rail with the iron bars are the remains of a fire place that were inside a platelayers hut. These were often timber with a brick chimney. I thing there were the remains of a few a bit further north. There was also a brick built permanent way hut a bit further that survived in fairly good condition. A good place to shelter when the heavens open - as it did on the day I visited!

Excellent video, absolutely loved the still pictures taken in the tunnel. Trawsfynydd used to house an inland nuclear power station and there used to be a nuclear flask taken from Trawsfynydd by rail through Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Conwy Valley Line to Sellafield on a regular basis. This line between Trawsfynydd & Blaenau Ffestiniog is now closed. Now for the Welsh and I stand to be corrected as well. Cwm is like you saying coom, a 'dd' is like the English 'th' and a single 'f' in a name is like a 'v'. Cwm means valley, Nant is small river or brook,

Very interesting video liked the colours in the tunnel .my geography and geology teacher in secondary school Mr Meredith a Welsh chap taught us that a cwm or Corrie were terms for a glaciated hollow worn by ice.

Great video and commentary walked most of this line many times, thanks for posting. Just to be clear the construction of Llyn Celyn was not the demise for this line, offers by Liverpool Corporation to build a line deviation were not enough to save it, for all the impressive views the line afforded and there are many, this line was never going to survive Mr Beechings modern vision for British rail.

I always find it rather sad to see such remnants of a railway, and thinking 'what if? What have I missed?' Your films at least to some extent bring them back to life, at least in the imagination!

The old line runs through Tyn Cornel camp site, our kids stayed there on a number of occasions. Disused railways are very evocative places, the echos of life and endeavour and lost youth.

The bridge you looked at is made of GWR Broad guage Bridge rail lots of it was used in structures and for posts for fences and signs as there was a lot available as the gauge was changed gradually to 4ft 8 and a half inches from 7ft. You will see it has holes in the foot for fixing it down to the longitudinal timbers of the broad gauge track. The concrete post was one of the posts that formed the handrails of the bridge similar to the ones on Cwm Prysor viaduct. They often also had the bridge number plate attached. Lots of short under bridges were rail decked. The rails were sometimes bridge rail on GW branch lines and sometimes bullhead rails bolted together across the bridge at intervals to keep them stable and upright. The beauty of bridge rail for this purpose was that is flat based so stands upright with no tying together, hence its widespread use as the top of culverts such as these.

An excellent video and I loved the viaduct, a Ribblehead in miniature! I think the chain hoists on that iron bridge are for demounting a cattle box off a trailer or wagon.

Fantastic video! It would be absolutely amazing to see this line reopened but it’ll never happen. The Liverpool Council had in fact planned to deviate the line but it didn’t happen as British Transport decided to close the line. If memory serves, the route had been closed to passengers prior to this and was only a freight route. Had you visited in August/Setember the following year even more of the trackbed was to be seen as we had exceptionally dry weather and the reservoir was at its lowest since the mid 90s. My Nain (grandmother) lived just a little way past the Cwm Prysor viaduct and remember how the trains would drop stuff off to their farm. I do find it funny how on your return trek across the viaduct that it’s raining! Welcome to Welsh weather! Also the Nant Prysor v Cwm Prysor confusion - I know it as Cwm Prysor viaduct. Nant Prysor would be the little river/stream that flows beneath it. Anyway, I won’t bore you with more info on this one. Fascinating stuff! I’m really enjoying your vids! 👌

Great Video, the metalwork used on top of the water course bridges was old broad gauge rail, these were also used on straining posts on track side fencing. Well done on your attempts at the Welsh names, Llan thur vil (Llandderfel), kelin (Celyn).

the rails you can seen on that culvert are old Great Western Railway bridge rails used on its 7 foot gauge system. it is found over much of the Great Western along with the later type as gat posts and other features.

There is a strong possibility that Irish Rebel leader Michael Collins would have travelled along this railway. He more than likely would have been brought to Fron Goch detention camp following the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin from Stafford Prison. When he was released from Fron Goch in December 1916 he caught the ferry boat back to Dublin from Holyhead. In order to get to Holyhead would mean a train from Fron Goch camp station back towards Bala and then Chester direction and then on to Holyhead through the earlier tunnel, the opposite way to when he may well have been brought in. Or, upon release he might have got the train from Fron Goch to Blaenau Ffestiniog and then onto Llandudno Junction and Holyhead going over the Cwm Prysor Viaduct route.

wonderful trip thanks, to be honest i don't mind if we don't see that much at all but here we have at least 2 viaducts, cuttings, tunnels, bridges, as well as rivers and a huge res and more, alot of this legacy to a forgotten bygone age is all in perfect condition, but the whole area seems so deserted which adds to the atmosphere, the tunnel pics are amazing and the pics from the past a nice touch

I have travelled the road from Bala to Trawsfynydd many times and seen the viaduct at Cwm Prysor and the course of the trackbed clinging to the hillside high above. I have always wondered what was left of the old line and now i know thanks to your wonderful video. I had no idea that there was a tunnel and in such good condition too. Thanks for sharing i really enjoyed watching.

Blimey you had everything in that one Ant, really excellent work. The tunnel was a beauty despite its length and the deep cutting was a sight to behold. I did some research on Llandderfel Station and whilst there are some buildings there, none of them appear to be railway related, however, there is a flight of steps down from the road bridge to where you will find a section of platform. The viaduct was an absolute sight for sore eyes too, it looks so well preserved. Now that the cold weather is here I hope you are going to get out and film some of your signature videos of frosty railway/canal scenery!!!!

I saw the station on maps and at first assumed the tunnel was nearby it's actually quite far. The viaduct is a beauty. I'm awaiting frosty sunny mornings on a day off ❤️

Great video, I remember exploring the lake with my grandad in the 90s when it was really low revealing the old road n bridge. Never knew there was a railway.

Ant, you've done it again! Superb blending of drone and hand-held camera shots, plus really good background music at appropriate stages. And of course scenery was captivating. Superb video, wonderful stuff. Only last year I was tracing this route on Google Earth, but the bit where the railbed disappeared under Llyn Celyn isn't clear because the reservoir was full at the time of the satelite view & your drone footage made it much clearer. The part of the trackbed after Cwm Prysor viaduct which you pointed out as having disappeared is marked as shale on old OS maps if my memory serves me correctly so it probably just washed away downhill. Must have been a nightmare to keep that stretch open. Great stuff mate. 👍👍

Nice stuff, thanks again. I've visited Cwm Prysor viaduct a few times, stunning place, and when continued towards Ffestiniog there are nice railway relics along the trackbed. And the views are stunning !

Driven past the viaduct and reservoir so many times, did walk over the viaduct about 15 years ago with cracking views of the valley, but I didn't know about the tunnel. As always great video Ant and keep them coming 👍

The tunnel through Bryn Tan -y -graig 2000yds west of Llandderfell Sta. was not part of the Bala junction to Ffestiniog line, it was located on the Ruabon to Barmouth junction line.

What a coincidence. Know the railway well and once - when staying in the area - was photographed on the Brymbo overbridge (by the old Capel Celyn halt with an old lamp on the platform which the guard put out on the last train of the day ) when in the 1950s it was still running. Recall the trains going by.. Never been to see the tunnel though.

Great inspiration to stop and visit that part of the line. Welsh pronunciation is always a problem. Some are way off, but it would take time for you to study it. To explain the two names of the viaduct: Cwm Prysor=Prysor valley and Nant Prysor=Prysor stream. Prysor is pronounced “Pruss -or”, as usual in Welsh the emphasis is on the penultimate (in this case first) syllable. Prysor can be translated as “hurricane”; it must be quite a violent stream when in full spate!

A lovely and nicely edited video of this beautiful line. I've visited this line for years and I have always found it a fascinating place. After the viaduct the views from the line were absolutely breathtaking. The Cwm Prysor Halt (station house and platform) are not far from the viaduct when your travelling east, and Frongoch (private residence) is further on beyond the Llyn Celyn dam.
