Golda Schultz sings Anne Trulove’s Act I aria in the final dress rehearsal. Production: Jonathan Miller. Conductor: Susanna Mälkki. 2021-22 season. Videography by Neville Braithwaite.
Those are the ones already at the Met, we have plenty already occupying European opera houses, and soon they will be at the Met e.g Cecelia Masabane, Vuvu Mpofu, Nombulelo Yende, Siphokazi Molteno etc. The men are countless too
Just saw Rake tonight at the Met, was so impressed by Golda’s performance, I had to look this aria up on RU-vid as soon as I got home to listen to it again, and again, and again. Brava!
Stupendous. I love this aria and have heard many great singers do it. This ranks high among any performance I’ve ever heard, and that final (beautiful, rounded) high C is the best I’ve heard since Dawn Upshaw did it on her studio recording!
It's on the MET Saturday broadcast today... Act 3 just starting. Golda brought the house down at end of Act 1... I swear, she held the C even longer. I still have goosebumps.
Too bad I never heard this opera before, to better appreciate this production's singers performances! This one sounds astonishingly great by any standards.
Dear Peter Gelb, You have AGAIN missed a golden opportunity to expose American audiences and those around the world to this masterpiece of 20th century opera. Instead you are presenting repeats of productions already HDed at the whim of "superstars", and with your firing of your TURANDOT lead, you burned yourself in the ash by not replacing it with this important revival. If you ever have the great wisdom to schedule a revival of RAKE (or even PELLEAS) and you do NOT give it an HD, then you deserve to lose the audience members you do for your repetition of already seen repertoire. Grow a brain and throw some crumbs to those who like to see neglected repertoire. These works have life and validity, too.
I dont understand why anyone would like this opera. It is such a paind to listen too. Like has nobody listed to Motzart, Handel, verdi, Vivalsi etc etc? How can this flat monotonous sounds compare?
The orchestra score alone is rhythmically brilliant and harmonically rich and original. I like the blend of classical elements mixed with often the downright weird. It’s an acquired taste and many won’t like it but just because some don’t like doesn’t mean others won’t.
Sooo many sopranos over sing this full of slurs and endless pulling down the tone into the jaw. In the end it is all lost and sounds messy, far too loud with no precision. Not to mention like an old lady wailing with way too far a tempo and garbled final top note. The lack of freshness is tiresome and it seems to be a heavy trend to this role. It is as if they all think this is some Verdi escapade. Yawn.
