The Ram, although never used in combat as it was originally designed, was a widely successful Canadian Tank that was converted into practical alternatives during World War Two.

Ram was a good tank for the time it was designed, it was just that unknowns made it redundant, and used mainly for training leading up to D-day. If Sherman production had not been as great as it was and if not for logistic reasons, the Sherman was picked for D-day, the ram would have gone into combat as a tank in Normandy. In the end, timing and US Sherman production was the Ram's biggest fault and not much could have been done to prevent that. I have often said that if the Ram had been rushed to North Africa and had been used by the 8th army, it would have gone down in history as a capable tank, instead of the failure some people like to think it was. By the time it was to be used in combat(D-day), it was no longer needed.

The thing is Canada never used any lend lease stuff, but passed it on. in 1940, the Billion Dollar gift was given to Britain, and was very unpopular in Canada since still in the Depression. Canada overall gave over 5 billion in cash to the war effort, plus Canada wrote off the BTAC training program for 500 million 1945 dollars, and Canada is still owed from Russia all the ships were refitted. Canad a built 1800 Valentine tanks that were given to Russia. Elsie McGill built 16000 Hurricanes.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but nobody knew in 1941 that things were about to get worse and better for the allies. The Ram was an essential piece of kit during the development and speedy production of the M4. Weeks and months could have seen events change rapidly, where the empire could have been begging in vane for a gun tank like Ram and even Covenantor, had a longer term view been taken prematurely.

Interesting info. Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see a video about Canada's other achievement: the transport vehicle industry.

Hey there was a few things your got wrong, there was no such thing as a Ram Mark 3, i assume you got that confused for the late production mark 2 which mainly removed the mg turret of the M3 Lee and replaced it with a bow machinegun, installed the longer version of the 6 Pounder, and replaced the early VVSS with the later VVSS seen on the Sherman. You also show the Ram Mark 1 while talking about the "Mark 3". Another thing is less of a mistake but the Rams armed with the QF 75mm were actually in service with the Canadians before the dutch received them. If you want some better resources theres a website called RAMtank, its down but you can find it on the wayback machine and has photos of the ram and its many variants, and a lot of good info on the Ram's history itself

The Canadian tank skink was actually used in combat, and because the Luftwaffe was already destroyed it was used to clear forests. Lets just say it was loved by the Allied troops around it, because it shredded those forests.

What about the New Zealand "tank meme"? Of course there's the Bob Semple but there are actually other tanks that New Zealand developed other than the Bob Semple.

0:09 Outside of the memes about it the Bob Semple really isn't that good of a tank, or even a tankette for that matter given its size. If I absolutely HAD to have a tank or tankette and I had to choice between the Bob Semple or Italian tankettes and tanks I'll take the Italian stuff in a heartbeat.
