1980-1982, their best live performances. Perfect vocals, perfect speed - not too slow, not too fast. Dee Dee was still alive and kickin'. And Pleasant Dreams is a greatly underrated album - the songs kick ass played live.

This was the tour I saw them on the first time I saw them, in Houston. This is how I remember the tempos being. The only reason I even mention it is because the 2nd time I saw them was in ‘85, 4 years later and they were playing at least twice as fast. With Richie they were playing almost at hardcore tempos, and it didn’t do them any favors in my opinion. The 3rd (and final) time I saw them, in ‘92 they played even faster, and the songs almost sounded mechanical. The first time I saw them it was perfect. Slightly faster than the original recordings but only barely so. I had been wondering if my memories were a bit off, but after watching this I see that it’s exactly how I remember it.

Love the Ramones, but Iggy Stooge, the MC5, Shakey Jake and Question Mark, all from Detroit/Ann Arbor/Flint were inventing punk rock in the mid 60's. Ramones caught on and did it well. MC5 was named the most influential punk band of all time by a British publication just a couple years ago. Won't say anything bad about the Ramones, but people should probably actually know the history before they opine so as to avoid more misinformation. Let's face it, we swim in that every day. Unless we try to get real facts into the conversation, the information becomes less valuable continuously.
@moLeOnPoT

@@masterofdisaster2272 In my opinion Stooges New York Dolls Velvet Underground and MC5 set the stage for Punk music and also were ahead of their time concerning Rock in general. Some of their stuff sounds so visionary in hindsight. BUT the Ramones defined the sound of Punk Rock in my view. The others werent as raw. Still had long songs with psychedelic elements etc. That is just my opinion. I love the afore mentioned bands just as much as I love the Ramones.

@@moLeOnPoT exactly! Everybody always does that "Well, actually..." thing but neglect to mention all those pre-punk bands (Stooges, MC5, Dolls, etc) still had a heavy blues, jazz, avant garde, psychedelic, etc elements in their music (and because of that were often labeled "heavy metal" back then. "Punk rock" was used to describe 60s garage bands). Elements the Ramones completely did away, not to mention they were far faster and simplistic than any of those bands ever were. NOTHING sounded like Ramones before. Sure you can find a song or two that are similar but you can't find a whole album of songs like that. When it comes to ground zero of punk ROCK The Ramones are it.

Good point. In 1980-81 they were faster and louder than 1977 , Joey's voice was more aggressive and less whiny. They were PERFECT. Then there was an "almost metal" evolution towards 1983-84, Joey's voice was too growly. When Marky returned, drumming was too plain and excessively fast - so fast that Joey could not keep with words. Pleasant Dreams is a gem, damaged by a Spector-type production.

Not sure about Joey's vox compared to 77/78, seems to be going through the motions and ducks the higher notes here
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 3 года назад
@@samirdesai4788 Well, to some extent I think Joey also wanted his vocals to sound more aggressive anyway when they reached the mid 80s. The band as a whole was trying to stay relevant to the tempos and aggression seen in newer hardcore punk bands of the era. Today we look back and wonder why the Ramones decided to get so fast, but in the context of the time, it makes sense. The band ultimately stuck around for a long time and cemented themselves as legends by NOT staying locked into their 70s era sound. But of course, many new fans today really appreciate that 70s material.

First time I saw them was like two months later or a few months before depending on what you believe the real date of this video is . July 1981 in Staten Island New York I was 16 years old I can't believe my parents let me go . I'll never forget it I got crushed against the stage in front of Dee Dee and I was pulled up on the stage and got to watch the whole show inches away from DD sitting on the stage and actually caught a pick he tossed. This was the peak of their career . The energy from the band and the fans was incredible. If anybody was there you'll remember Saturday night the lights went out power failure and they have the play the next night . We sat online for hours Saturday afternoon waiting to get in and they had to cancel the show and play the next night because of a power failure .

Got to say I would of preferred them not to of sped up crazily late 80’s but perhaps they wouldn’t of been so huge in Latin America if they hadn’t. It's always great to see an early Ramones concert before Marky returned and they played too fast and Joey just grunted. But the best part is when they play tracks from the album they're supporting and you get to hear the songs stripped down because most 80s Ramones albums were "overproduced" (by early Ramones standards) and it's cool to hear the songs how they would actually sound without keyboards, guitar overdubs, etc.

I think this is the Ramones at their peak: The later years in the 90's when every song was exactly the same beat/speed didn't do it for me like these early era shows did.

1985-1990 is considered to be their weakest period, due to the heavier sound and playing too fast, one thing i noticed, is that Joey sang so fast, that he would often skip, certain lyric's because it was too fast for him.

2:15 Johnny does a clockwise spin...usually it's counterclockwise, and he typically pivots on his left heel.

He probably went in the opposite direction due to being tangled up in his cable. It sounds funny...but it makes sense.

Great to hear a few of the Pleasant Dreams tracks played live. Maybe the only tour that tracks 4,5,12 and 28 were aired. Joey sounds fantastic.
