All Mack’s had that mint green interior up to 72. The 711 was a good engine though all the ones I drove were turbocharged and if the pump was set right they did a good job 👍

I drove an F model day cab for 10 years. It was red similar to this one. Mine had a 237 and a 5 speed. It had exhaust that exited under the frame. It only took 1 day to put up a stack. The exhaust would burn your eyes & nose. It had Dayton hubs & wheels and 38000 rears with camel back suspension. The ride was rough and we named it Teddy Roosevelt because he was a Rough Rider too. It was a tractor and I pulled dry vans.
I had a 1963 F600 single axle drive that was 10 year old when I bought it. Came with the green interior, two 50 gal side tanks but with sleeper. The front bar, just above the bumper is a torque rod to lift the cab (not hydraulic cab lift pump) same as I drove in 1967 truck driving school in El Monte, CA. The original Mack bumper was a straight channel with middle cut outs (no tapers at ends). Mine came with a R-180 rear axle, but all the rest was factory Mack. I was able to get the Chassis Record (original build sheet) from Mack using the serial number from the cab. Most were custom built--mine had North American Van Lines paint over painted (light blue chassis, white cab) black chassis and Budd wheels, which were more common out west. Based upon the PTO control and the fact the truck did NOT come with fifth wheel, last use was as a truck/trailer combo, rather than Tractor Semi Trailer. Original use was likely tractor, but compare the wheelbase. Back in 1966, a day cab tractor was expected to haul a 40 foot trailer within 50 feet, so the most common wheelbase would have been 130" to the center of the tandem (with a 26" set back from the bumper to the steer axle). If it was used further west, where the overall length was 55 feet, you could add another 60" to the wheelbase. In CA, we didn't get 45 foot trailers until after 1971. So this truck reflected the manufacturing time frame for the size regulations in force. I have the Mack builder's spec options sheet that I obtained from the LA Mack Factory rep for the F model in 1963. Regards, robertrogersge@aol.com
We had a 1960’s F series in the mid 1070’s through late 1980’s with a cabover can. Yup, had a 711. First big rig I ever rode in! I was born in 1966, so was a kid. Miss it! Rust got to it. Also, being a big fan of 2 stroke Detroit diesels, the truck at end of the video with an 8V71 N was a real treat! Cheers!
We have had hundreds of F models in the Netherlands and other European countries Started with F600 in the sixties to F 700 to the early eighties. A nice dependable truck with HP of 190 up to 375 ( END(T) 673,711,675,676,865,866) most of them had Neway airide. There a still a few left restored by us and collectors.
Like you say, a pretty cool truck, and it has a good looking style and stance to it. I looked up the 711 engine specs. While not a power house, it’s got a decent torque and a pretty wide power band. So it was a flexible engine with decent fuel consumption per h/p spec. I would say this would be good for local less than full load duty. Being non turbocharged, operating cost savings were good as back then, turbos required a lot of additional care and maintenance. But those brakes! They scare the Willie’s out of me! I don’t want anything to do with them things other than maybe a trip around the parking lot! Leave the old floppy sloppy railroad design based brakes in the past where they belong!
Back in the day, it was commonplace for carriers to have a stockpile of pre-made signs that consisted of handpainted lettering on a steel sheet with rounded corners and four predrilled holes, one in each corner. The sign contained the basic information required by the ICC, which would have been the carrier name, town and state in which the carrier was based, and the ICC number. These signs could be quickly fastened to newly acquired power units to minimize down time that would have otherwise been spent waiting for a sign painter to do the job, which could take days or weeks depending on backlog. Also back in the day, there were tons of Mack F models running up and down the road. Mack pumped them out by the thousands every year for decades.
May have been Railway Express Agency; the predecessor of UPS for the dark green over a beige primer. And the Budd wheels was a standard issue item when the trucks were spec’d for coast to coast uniformity. And the wholes in the doors were for the name of the company because a lot of companies would paint there names on sheet metal snd then rivet them to the doors before 3M invented the sticky type decals. I drove a single axle 73 F-700 for a company here in eastern Pa. hauling the U S Mail and it had the 237 Maxidyne with the 5 speed Maxitorque
With that oddball PTO handle behind the rear window, & the heavy rears & single frame, I'm thinking it was involved as a "Shift on the fly" tank sprayer, for spraying water, or a pesticide. Great video on the 'Ol Mack!
I recognize every part on that truck as I worked at the Mack Parts depot in MD for 30 years. I have been lucky enough to see many of these as we shipped several trailers of truck via UPS every day and that is the truck they were using. Overnight used to use them to haul our freight along with R models . These are like a 57 Chevy, Here one day, gone the next. I got to drive many experimental trucks while I was there. It was quite the treat to work for Mack.

Those are spring chambers for parking located inside the frame rails. Correct. Rears are 40,000 lb. capacity, there were no 44s back then. They went to fabricated stanchions and were reclassified as 44,000 lb. in '73. Up until '73 or so, rears were: Flat flanged axles and fabricated stanchions: 34/38K Six stud splined caps and cast stanchions: 40K Eight stud splined caps and cast stanchions: 50/60/80K '73 - '77 or '78: Flat flanged axles and fabricated stanchions: 34/38K Six stud splined caps and fabricated stanchions: 44K Eight stud splined caps and cast stanchions: 50/55/65/80/100K ''78 or '79 - on Flat flanged axles and fabricated stanchions: 34/38K Six stud splined caps and fabricated stanchions: 44K Eight stud splined caps and cast stanchions: 50/58/65/80/100K 34/38/40/44K had 20" or 22" spokes. 50/55/58K had 22" or 24" spokes. 65/80/100K had only 24" spokes. 34/38K all had five spoke wheels. 40/44/50/55/58/65K all had six spoke wheels. 80/100K all had eight spoke wheels. 34/38/40/44/50K had 16.5" brakes. 55/58K and possibly some early (pre '73) 50K had 18" brakes. 65/80/100K had 20" brakes. 34/38/40/44K all had CRD 92/93 series carriers. 50/55/58K all had CRD 112/113 series carriers. 65/80/100K all had CRD 95/96 series carriers. In more recent years, most heavy rears have CRD 200 series carriers. 44K went to 6 stud flat flanged axles in '87. 50K went to 8 stud flat flanged axle shafts and fabricated stanchions but with capped trunnion bars like cast stanchions sometime in the '90s. 100/80K were eliminated at some point over the years.
It is not military. We had some Mack Conventionals in the Seabees but everything was green and US Navy and numbers in black. Army was the ssme, and Marines. All were painted on, not rivited signs. Seabee Logo was yellow stencil.
Very interesting truck for sure! I've seen very few C/O Mack trucks of any models. There are still a ton of the old R models still in regular use in my area
New York City Fire Department had two F700's in the late 60s through the 70s called the "Super pumper and its Water tender. The Super pumper was a 5th wheel trailer that was powered by a huge 12 cylinder Cummins and the tender carried a massive amount of water. Both pulled by those F700's with i think 237s and manual 5 speeds with 38s. They were awesome and I believe most of the Super pumper is still here, basically in tact. They're awesome, you've never seen them look them up.
The license plate is a Farm plate. There is a trailer hitch. The PTO might have been for an agricultural application trailer, like a grain trailer with an auger for unloading run by the PTO. The trailer hitch could have been for pulling other farm type trailers. The farm might have an RGN so they cut the ramps into the rear of the frame.

Love your backyard full of sleeping Bulldogs, Mack built the 'crackerbox' F series to satisfy operators wanting max payload at the expense of driver comfort. Okay for short runs but hate to take one on long distance work, regarding the two stick double gearbox, the main box is four speed, auxiliary box a three speed with double grandma or overdrive. Still learning about Mack gearboxes, did Mack produce a six speed box ,like a David Brown or AEC Thornycroft ?. The Bulldog has air mechanical brakes, like some Bristol buses and unusual in having ten stud disc wheels,. Most Macks ran on six spoke trilex wheels and the last owner fitted tubeless tyres on the front axle. Seriously like the old Bulldogs so cool, especially the ' R' Series with Mack,s snorting big banger V-8.
Cool truck. Workhorses that made the country. Do a vid on the white one behind, looks to be a lot newer. Always though Mack’s were the best. Especially the V-8’s, loved them
That body is in pretty darn good shape overall. While it has some rust in a few places, a good body sheet metal welder repair and fabricator can easily take care of the existing rust.
When I was a little kid My dad drove an F model Mack,it had a I671 Detroit with a 13 speed, I know it wasn't original. He also drove a DM 800 Heavy hauler, V671 Detroit and 18 speed quadruplex, I 13:56 think it was a 68' it had the cab offset to the driver's side that one was his baby lol.
You could get a fibreglass cab on the F model in oz ..........made by Reinforced Plastics ,and the same cab was used on the Leader trucks ,which were made by the half owners of Mack Trucks Australia
Id be soooo lost trying to drive that mack.butt i grew up on them and rode in 1 with my sister and uncle driving it hauling my moms furniture to Youngstown ohio.he dove it for national freight out of Vineland nj
@@BrockZandMackZ I was expecting for you to say that the pull handle at the back window to go to the fifth wheel lol 😂 . Of course that wouldn't have worked out to good because the driver would still have to move the landing gear up & down from outside the truck at the trailer .
A certain speed trans is not normally what they have for forks and sliding clutches. Your speed designation is off of how different gear ratios there are in the transmission. 2 ratios are probably the same or near the same ratio so minus one.
These F models seem to drive well in 8*4 config. Sure haul a good load. Hauled a number of 70 ton glw with them in the early eighties. Was a bit nerve wracking with that heavy loading but i only ever had one roblem where a universal in driveline came loose until almost falling off. Got it hand tight and limped to where tools were available. Very tall cab.
ups never allowed maneplates or puppy dogs on thier trucks. you could tell who made them but forget the badges. yep for an f model thats in good shape. the sliding glass is probably from a 60's chevy truck they took the same glass
when i started trucking my first assigned tractor was a 1970 slabcab F model mack twin screw.237 5 speed.what a miserable piece of crap it was.with 45k on the trailer i was in danger of being rear ended by amish in horse & buggies on the slightest ascending grade of the road.on my maiden voyage i had to stop every 5 or so miles & jamb sticks around the headlight buckets to keep the headlights shining far enough ahead of me to see.with every bump.the lights would tilt lower & lower till they shined 10 feet in front of the truck.had a grassburner exaust that leaked into the cab around the shifter to cab seal.i was eventually assigned an R.model, but it wasnt much better.the cab was so cramped id have to get out & stand on the fuel tank to fart.i've hated driving macks every sence.i wont touch one with a 10 foot pole nowdays, even though they have come a LONG way since then.
All vehicles, trucks, cars, buses (why MCI's made of stainless steel) & farm equipment rusted out back then because all city, county, & state hwy departments used the cheapest salt they could buy for the snow. God forbid any deicing chemical mix without sodium chloride
I get a kick out of these hoarders/ collectors. They say they are going to restore them but they leave them out in the weather getting worse. Build a shelter for the ones you actually intend to restore
Let me explain something to you. Watch my videos on my channel. You will see multiple trucks that I was willing to share to the public to enjoy whether I own all of them or not. Most of them were on their way or I picked them out of the scrap yard. So you may call it hoarding, but I call it saving, or giving them a second chance. And yes it's a very used term "I'm going to get to it some day" but this is my retirement projects when I get a chance. I don't expect to find these trucks 30 years from now, so I'm planning for my future. Thank you for watching my channel.

A truck driver today cannot even compare what driving Macks like this entailed.NO A/C and that oil burner is producing about 400 degrees in that cab,great in the winter with all the windows open but you had to be a real man with 5 kids,a spendy wife ,mortgage and credit cards to come to work every day in July/August But let's not just pick on Mack.All of them had cabovers.Great for servicing,pathetic to sit in in bumper to bumper traffic
All cabovers had pathetic ride quality . Drove a Ford XLT 9000 series gor 3 months, (co folded when owner died) thdt was not bad, but the newer Scania in Canada w 4 corner airbag suspension cab rode great, nicest truck I've ever driven.Too bad they won't let them in USA. Started at 14 yrs old on a Mack C model twin stick chain drive dump truck w/PTO cable winch (look at pics of trucks building Hoover Dam) with no roof or headache rack spreading gravel on.logging roads in mountains so no DL needed. Gained experience, & class 1 DL @16. (Yes, I'm that old) Only got better from there. Have had many jobs in slow times because I could drive a twin stick & most others couldn't. Best truck was a late B model w V8 & triplex .
I have an old military pickup that has a bid contract number on the vin plate,also there is an inventory plate that refers to the truck as a half ton cargo pick up and the date that it was first placed in service,June 1966, army contract number and the front part of the frame is thicker than the regular version. The plate is mounted on the glove box ,of the Mack was originally placed in government service,it should have one of those inventory plates somewhere in the cab or on the vin plate. Nice tractor,I hope it sees the road again.
I remember most trucks and busses had that sickening sea foam green vomit color the USG & military adored so much they even painted office furniture to match the walls. The sick designers even made the same color tarrazzo floors, especially in bathrooms 30's - 1952.
