#rollsroyce
One vehicle in the collection of the Petersen Automotive Museum epitomizes the prewar art deco school of design and, in its day, won acclaim at automotive beauty contests throughout France. An unlikely combination of extravagant European coachwork on a conservative British chassis, the car was a 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I with a body built in 1934 by Jonckheere of Belgium. Like all other prewar Rolls-Royce motorcars, this Phantom I was delivered new in chassis-only form to a coachbuilder. Hooper & Co. was the chosen body maker and in 1925 the completed vehicle was delivered with cabriolet coachwork to its first owner, Mrs. Hugh Dillman, the former Anna Thompson Dodge who was widowed by her previous husband, automobile pioneer Horace Dodge, leaving her one of the world’s wealthiest women.
Watch the video to discover the whole story! This car may have inspired Justin Bieber’s new Rolls Royce Wraith!

I would have to say the Ruxton 1930 will always take lead because it establishes color. Really when you see these vehicles I know that a lot of you are saying "wow theirs nothing like it" or "soo ahead of its time" but really their were plenty of automobiles that looked this way, you need to be smart and find them. Put the years 1925-1928-1930-1933-1934-1937-and 1939 in close mine for that ia where each were created to he similar. Their are as well street options, many that offered a similarity although perhaps not 1925, a time later. Ford 1937, Lincoln Zephyr 1936, pierce arrow 12 1935, 1940 Chysler thunderbolt, 1934 and 1935 Chysler imperial, I could go on and on.

Ιt's really sad to see most of the time a car in three fourths with a guy talking, no matter the saying. Not plenty interior view, no look in engine compartment, no, no no... This is practically something in between of nature mort and voyerism with underlying vanity. Certainly doesn't make anything to any car. Pure show off with a background (hi)story.

WAY back in the early 1960s I saw that car in the trailer that you talked about! We lived in central Md at the time. The trailer was parked in a shopping center parking lot. I remember that the engine compartment had glass sides so you could see the engine. If I remember correctly the engine had two spark plugs per cylinder. I think the story then was that the car went to the middle east somewhere and was owned by a high ranking person, maybe a king or prince. Great video!

Quite a few years back a few of us got a special tour of the Petersen Museum basement by Dick Messer when he was still Executive Director. At that time, they didn't have basement tours for the public like they do now so it was pretty special to be down there. He showed us this Rolls Royce and it was unrestored at the time. Painted a silver color as I recall, and not in great shape cosmetically but looked reasonably solid. He demonstrated how the windows opened and closed in the round doors and I see they demonstrate that in this video. I'm sure they move much smoother now. He said the museum at that time had somebody in England doing research on the car for their restoration. He said it was only one of two, or perhaps the only Rolls Royce, to have a slanted grill. Many years later I was at the car show at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and, voila, there it was on display. It was all the more interesting to see the "after" having seen the "before".

I first saw this car at the Swanton swan festival in Swanton Vermont in 1978. I paid a dollar to go in the large trailer to look at the gold metal flake paint job. Turns out it was not real gold. At Christmas time that year, I observed the large display trailer at Bob Bahre's office in Oxford , Maine. As you know Bob was a premier car collector. Chris Charlton and crew restored this car in Bob's restoration shop in I believe was 1979 or 80. It was refinished in a white color. Bob then sold that car along with a Mercedes ssk race car to a Japanese businessman that was located in silicone Valley California. The cars were sold by Bob to finance turning Bryer Motor Park in New Hampshire into NHIS Na scar race track. Bob eventually sold the track to Bruton Smith for 365 million dollars cash. I worked at the restoration shop for 8 years on a part time basis. I knew Bob almost my entire life. He ( now his family)has what is called one of the best classic car collections in the world. Bob passed away a years ago.
