In this video I continue my exploration of the world of Gordon & Macphail by trying what is most likely the rarest whisky I've had the pleasure to try thus far, a 40 year old 1982 Glen Mhor Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This is a whisky that is lost in time and serves as a glimpse back into the past. The Glen Mhor Distillery was founded in 1892 in Inverness, Scotland. It's a fascinating distillery that sadly closed in 1983 due to the whisky loch and was torn down by 1989, having been replaced by a shopping mall. The Gordon & Macphail Private Collection Glen Mhor 1982 40 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cask # 72 was matured in a Refill Sherry Hogshead, is bottled at cask strength at 50.8%, is non-chill filtered and is natural colour. This Gordon and Macphail Glen Mhor is one of the most unique whiskies I've ever tried and is certainly amoung the rarest, if not the single rarest, whisky I have ever tried. If you've ever been curious about closed/ghost distilleries and whisky of the past this is a video for you. Thanks a always for watching. Cheers.

Super cool, much like that Torabhaig comparison you did. Was listening podcast style but I had the thought that you live your Skye distilleries as much as anyone. Talisker and Torabhaig are your jam. I've decided you need to go to Skye John lol 😆 You're meant for that place! Cheers buddy 🥃

You are a lucky boy to have tasted that whisky!. I'm from Inverness myself and its a tragedy that we have lost all 3 distilleries.

Feeling super lucky Sandy. Wonderful thing to get a chance to try. Only hope that perhaps one day we can get a spiritual successor to those distilleries that left quite the legacy. Cheers buddy 🥃

Great video Matt! Love when folks get the opportunity to try old/rare/out of production whiskies. Nice Job on the story as well.

Nice review of an epic bottle! I've sampled this as well and gave it a 4.5/5 on my very crude grading scale. Some of my notes were: herbal, tropical, earthy sherry with a finish of umami, charred caramel, floral, waxy & mint. Just outstanding whisky and a privilege to try this. I still preferred the Pulteney 1982 though😉.

Really cool that you are also one of the few that also got the privilege of trying this whisky. "Herbal, tropical, earthy sherry with a finish of umami" really nails it along with waxy. Really great notes Sascha, well done! I still have 2 samples of the 1982 Pulteney waiting in the wings. I guess it really says a lot that the Pulteney stood out above this one and the fact that KWM loved it so much that they snuck it into not one but two different virtual tastings haha. Cheers buddy 🥃

Question for you, so i was thinking of buying a whiskey to save for my 10 year anniversary. Im assuming a single cask or something from gordon macphail. Which do you recommend? Was thinking something between 150 and 250 cdn

Hey Tristan, sorry for the delay, I've been quite ill and busy, a nasty combination. First off, love the Mia San Mia tattoo! Auf geht's Bayern! It's a tough question to answer but if you haven't already picked it up I'd definitely be looking in the direction of a G&M single cask. The Canada Exclusive Longmorn 200715 year old is really nice for the price. Blueberries for days, dried fruit, chocolate and coffee. But it really depends on which distilleries and flavour profiles you like. Hope you find a good one Tristan! Cheers 🥃

Fantastic notes! I’m super jealous. What a special and interesting bottle. Maybe I need to start joining in on those KWM online tastings again. Thanks for sharing your experience with this one. Cheers, Matt!

Thanks Sheldon! This was a treat to get to try. The KWM tastings really do offer a great opportunity to try things you never would otherwise. For me, they make a lot of sense. Cheers buddy 🥃

Normally I say "Of course you should review that old, independent bottling. A viewer might not buy that exact bottle but it might lead to them trying a younger, less expensive expression that they otherwise might not have been thinking of." Not sure that advice is applicable this time XD So my other often given advice is review whiskies you want more people to be exposed to. =) Sláinte, son!

That's usually how I view them too, either gives an idea of how well said bottler manages stock or if that distilleries flavour profile is in a person's wheelhouse. I almost didn't review this because I was like, no one is going to be looking for Glen Mhor. Very happy to fall into group B. I went looking for Glen Mhor reviews and found very little. I was like, this won't get views but it'll be there for the person who, like me, went looking to find out what whisky from this distillery was like. Thanks for watching Hex, cheers buddy 🥃
