037 - The Rate Constant
In this video Paul Andersen describes the characteristics of the rate constant in chemical reactions. The rate constant is highly variable in reactions and must be determined experimentally. The rate constant is dependent on both temperature and the presence of a catalyst. In a first-order reaction the rate constant and the half-life are both independent of the concentration and inversely proportional.

Hello, Mr. Andersen. I am Ralph A Augustus, a medical student. Your lectures helped me a lot with Pharmacology. I also followed your videos for studying Chemistry. Thanks a ton.

I have a question please . What I understood from the previous video that the rate of reaction in the zero order is constant ( in other words) if we increase the the concentration of the reactants the rate " how fast the reaction will proceed " is not effected thus its independent from the reactants concentration and the given example was ammonia NH3. While also in the previous video , it has been said that the first order reaction will be Dependent on the concentration of the reactions ( it was shown to be inversely relationship ) this can be shown in H2O2 example . However, in this video (37) , So that I found it quite confusing as it is mentioned that it in-dependent. Please provide clarification Many thanks

I know this is a little late but maybe it could help someone else struggling with the same question. From what you've said, it seems you'v got the reaction rate and the rate constant mixed up. Reaction rate is how fast the reactants are getting consumed and is presented by: Rate = k [A] + [B] since in a zeroth order reaction the reactants are raised to the 0th power that gives us rate= K. hence the rate in a zeroth order reaction is equal to K, the rate constant, which is independent of the reactant concentration. K in any order reaction is independent of the reactant concentration. The only thing with first order reactions is that the K also has a relationship with the half life of the reactants, as they both are independent of the reactant concentration and have an inverse relationship. hope that helps

If the rate of a reaction is affected by temperature, concentration, pressure and surface area, then why does the rate law only have concentration and a constant in its equation?
@TheAceOverKings
@TheAceOverKings 9 лет назад
I'm still a student myself, but I'm pretty sure that is why the rate has to be determined experimentally. We would have to have an extremely complicated equation, if such an equation exists, to find a new k value for each reaction taking into account temperature, concentration, pressure and surface area, let alone activation energy and thermodynamic factors. It's simply not practical. Finding it experimentally allows the constant to be calculated via the equation provided with a few trials and only the start and end concentrations.

Hello, my name is Ben. I am a young graphic designer standing at the age of 15. I was hoping to some day grow my channel, so I would have more of an audience of what I have now. I put a lot of effort into my designs. I was wondering if I could make you a banner for your youtube channel, in trade for a spot in your subbox. I hope to maybe gain a small audience from the spot in your subbox. If you are interested, please message me over youtube! Also, my biology teacher plays your videos nonstop.
