THE READING RAILROAD

I had the opportunity to produce and edit this story in 1998 for Fox29's Good Day Philadelphia. For many years, the Reading Railroad gave Reading, Pa an identity. A positive, proud, hard working identity. Times for the city have drastically changed, even since the time I did this story. But maybe remembering its glorious past can make way for a bright future. Photojournalist and friend Kelvin Higgins worked with me on this piece.

My parents who grewup in Pottsville Pennsylvania have family memebers who worked for the Reading. My Grandmother's father had a section of track that started at Minersville and went through Frackville (he was a track foreman during the 1930's) My Grandfather was a brakeman on Reading EMD GP-30's from Pottsville to Hagerstown Maryland. My one mother's family member worked in the Reading Rialroad Offices.

The dad of a long time friend spent his career with the Reading. Last job, or nearly last job, prior to retirement was station manager at Hatboro. When visiting friends n the area I take the SEPTA regional rail from Warminster into Center City. A former Reading route. And then there's the Reading Terminal Market!

Interesting that you did this in 1998 and the reverend is talking about the Reading living through Conrail. As I'm sure you know, Conrail (or at least most of it) ended one year later. I have both of Jim Holton's books that he autographed for me at RCTHS train shows back then. I've been planning to model the Reading in Philadelphia in N scale most of my life and hopefully I'll do it before I die. Thanks for posting this.

Umm, _Monopoly_ is Parker Brothers, not Milton Bradley. Anyhoo, Reading's passenger service is now part of SEPTA's regional rail network.

I took the last Pasenger train out of Franklin Station to Plilly back in I believe 1972,to 6. After or before, I forget, the Conestoga wagons came through for the bicentenial. with my grandfather whom is still alive at a wonderous almost 96 years old. He got sick on that trip, he was probably 60 or so about then? Its insane that my home town has turned into Philly Junior, but its your fault keep voting Socialist (Democrat) and thats what you get. Look at Lancaster, passed Reading in population, Rail Transport and still has a station, A big one. Rails exsist on commoditys, not handouts. I miss those days when Reading was happening, now its pass Philly as the Murder capitol of PA! 4 Million against 70,000. Wow. Lancaster surpassed Reading 10 years ago in pop and still has rails to Harrisburg, York and several small lines. Where is Reading? Reading died when it it became Detroit Junior, Regulate everything and everyone gets a free ride. Gone down just a few mile away and see what Reading used to be. We don't have a pagoda for people to shoot at, we have Gentile people, whom remember the past. A farming, Amish, Agrigate, Mennonite and Massively Libertarian Community destroys the old socialist whims and undying faith ro destroy our Constitution, A Northern County, destroys so many. Rethink it. Relive it. Let me move home.

I had the opportunity to meet with him. He is in not a hate monger. Just a Lutheran minister with a love for trains.
