Overconsumption in the beauty industry has been talked about a lot lately, along with underconsumption and de-influencing. But most often, the negatives are about waste...both environmental and financial and there are many other downsides to hyper-consumerism. Today I'll be sharing my thoughts on this topic, including my own journey with buying beauty products. I'd love to continue the conversation down in the comment section! 🩷

💖 ABOUT ME:
Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time RU-vidr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. I hope you enjoy my channel and if you do, please don't forget to SUBSCRIBE & leave me a comment!

I've gotten a few comments from viewers who say that this video seems disingenuous because I'm an influencer whose job is to sell products and make money off of my subscribers. I want to say that I understand where you're coming from, but I also think you may have missed the point of this video. I mentioned in the beginning that I'm the last person who should lecture anyone when it comes to buying makeup. I'm not here to shame anyone who loves to shop and buy beauty products. By my own admission, I love it too! But I've also never been the type of "influencer" who is pushy or tells you that you need to buy all the things. Since the beginning of my channel, I've always tried to share lower cost alternatives and compare new releases to older products that you might already have. I never want anyone to spend money if they don't want to. I feel like I am allowed to love shopping but also recognize when it can be problematic. I don't look at it as black and white, like "well you're an influencer so you're supposed to push products and that's it" or "you're an anti-consumerist channel so you're not allowed to shop and buy things". I believe that both things can exist at the same time. I'm never going to not love shopping or buying makeup and skincare. But I believe that it should be done responsibly and with care and consideration for your budget, your lifestyle, the amount of space you have, etc. I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping those things in mind as we shop so that we can be smarter consumers. And THAT was the point of this video. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 😂❤️

I think it's insulting for someone to say that your job is to make money off of your subscribers. Yes, you make money by doing this but I would imagine that there are a lot of expenses that you incur as well. I wouldn't think it would be worth all of the time and money if you didn't at least make something back, and you should! Anyway, you've always struck me as someone who does RU-vid because you love makeup and talking about it with other people. If you were really out to make money off of us, you would take sponsorships.

Jen, those of us who watch you regularly know that you don't push anything on us. You're one of the most laid-back beauty channels on my watchlist (and my favorite, hehe). I was just telling another commenter that your hauls sometimes help encourage me NOT to buy things and it's all because of the way you present them. Other creators open everything up and gush about the products and it's like holding up shiny objects for people to want. You actually take the time to swatch things and try them I especially like when you go and get a similar product from your collection and do a comparison. By watching your hauls I realize that I don't need most of it and it's almost a form of window shopping because I can see what's new and get it out of my system. Keep doing what you're doing! 🤗🤗

@@JenPhelps Ignore the haters. You and No BS Beauty are the most honest reviewers on RU-vid (she does skincare products ). Like another commenter said, you tell it like it is, and you compare new releases to what you already have. That really helps me to decide if it's worth purchasing something.

Try to ignore those comments. Everyone must have a job or some type of income. This is yours, and people should not judge that. It is like someone saying a doctor makes money from a cancer patient…. It is disrespectful, a doctor will get pay to treat a patient but it is not that he put the disease inside the patient to make money from it. You always give your opinion and are not pushing anything on us. You have all the right to get paid for what you do.

Massive overconsumption can be a form of addiction. It can cause a mental health strain. Honestly…the more makeup I have…the LESS happy I am. Cosmetic companies DON’T want us to be truly happy with our products. Cosmetic companies want us to ALWAYS be on the hunt for the next best thing.

I understand this so much. Back when my mental illnesses were at their worst and I was completely off any type of medication and without therapy, impulsively and manically spending a good chunk of my entire paycheck, if not all of it, on things that I would see promoted online, was my biggest form of dopamine. It was severely unhealthy and the second I got it all home I would literally have an anxiety attack over how little space I had anymore. The clutter got to me, the next day when I'd look at my bank account I'd cry for a good long portion of the day, it was an awful experience. I also couldn't consistently keep a job at this point, so my paychecks were something rare to behold and seriously needed to be saved away. One day I looked around at everything I had collected, and I just could not handle it anymore. I not only mentally but also physically felt awful and so insecure. Everything that wasn't expired and new or barely used either got donated (if new and not close to expiration), or given to my mom's neighbor. I've always been a minimalist at heart, but I seriously believe that crap mental health and social media are the mix that contributed to my problem. I tell my fellow mentally ill lads and ladies and everyone in-between that if they're feeling depressed or anxious more than usual, to stay off of social media. I only have RU-vid and Snapchat now and let me tell you, I genuinely believe that my attention span is better (I can actually sit through an entire movie now!!! With fidgeting because adhd lol but still a huge improvement!), I don't feel nearly as insecure because I'm not constantly comparing myself to others and what they have or what's the latest products, and my mental health has improved greatly. Don't get me wrong, social media can be great! I still love watching shorts and videos from content creators I love, such as Jen herself, but that's also because I'm so much more picky about whose content I choose to consume. Not having Instagram isn't for everyone, but I implore everyone to go through who they're following and do a serious deep clean! Everything Jen said in this video is spot on about how I felt at the time, let's learn to love our already owned products again! 💕

That’s most every company but particularly in cosmetics. If consumers demanded stagnant product lines that never innovated, that’s what brands would do; consumers, in fact, demand the opposite.

@@Future-zx9ts There's very little that we can purchase that doesn't have "addiction" potential... please, come and see ALL of my scrapbook paper, lol! Anyway, while I agree with what you've said, I don't want to demonize cosmetic companies for releasing new products because that is their objective after all. As consumers it's our responsibility to be mindful with our purchases. I love when Jen fully explores a topic that makes us think, thanks Jen.

You know when influencers talk about makeup would rebuy if all of their makeup disappeared? Ya, that happened to me. All of my makeup was damaged in a fire, probably about 5k worth. I realized I was more of a makeup collector than a makeup user. Now that I have to rebuy makeup, I want to stick with makeup I will actually use, which is strictly cream products, and not many of them either. I am a senior with dry skin and I think the no-makeup makeup look is what looks best on me. Blending eyeshadows with a brush when your eyelid skin is loose is challenging and time consuming. I prefer using my fingers, and sometimes a damp sponge to apply complexion products. So I won't be repurchasing any makeup brushes. People may think I'm a weirdo for that, but IDC.

I was going crazy(2016) when I first really got into makeup and it continued until about a year ago. It was so bad, people stopped talking to me over it. Which was none of their business. At the time, I had the money. I just realized having everything that comes out was so foolish. I’m not a creator and I’m not getting massive amounts of PR like most RU-vidrs. How can any of them tell us we need to buy anything when they are hardly buying 5 percent of what they have? By the way, love how your eyes match your shirt!❤

But I didn't know anything about the higher end or indie brands so I tried a lot of stuff I ended up regretting & decluttering. I still have more than I can use (eyeshadow palettes) & will declutter it as it ages out & needs to go anyway. I know what shades/textures I like/use now & don't need more of same. Nobody needs 18 foundations & 50 lipsticks much less hundreds of eyeshadow palettes if they are not a reviewer/influencer.

Such a great video. I couldn’t agree more. Since I first started watching Utube at 76 years old I spent the first few months ordering products and recently I’ve started doing exactly what your stressing - which is checking first to see if I have something similar and then I’m not going to buy another pallet or foundation. I’ve ALWAYS been a lipstick addict 😂 and recently have learned it’s a big issue for others because it’s affordable and makes me feel good. But I don’t do that anymore; especially matte lipsticks. Again given my age I don’t always watch the younger utubers unless, like you, they offer good advice and tutorials. I was interested in doing a Utube channel myself but one that has wisdom on many years of life experiences as well as all the things I’ve learned from utubers or on my own throughout my life that I think are time savers and “just as good” as face cleaning balms for example. Anyway thank you so so much for this honest and insightful video.

While all of this is very well thought out and logical, I do want to push back on the videos with low views meaning "nobody" is watching. The people who want to watch ARE watching. We just happen to be in the minority. I understand why creators want to create content for the most people, but as a viewer, it's disappointing to see the content I actively want to watch for enjoyment and not out of boredom is either rarely or never coming.
@JenPhelps
@JenPhelps 3 дня назад
I was just speaking in hyperbole, of course some people do watch those videos but as a RU-vidr, my channel only continues to thrive and grow if I post content that will meet or exceed your current view counts. If I publish a video and it doesn't perform well, the next several videos I post won't be promoted by RU-vid (because the algorithm thinks that people are losing interest in my channel) and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So the reason we don't post videos that we know will underperform is because it can literally hurt our channels. It's sad that the algorithm works that way now, but it rewards viral and high-performing videos. It's all about money vs. enjoyment.

It explains a lot about why we see the same type of video over and over from so many creators-Amazon “must haves,” Ulta and Sephora hauls, the constant push of “my new holy grail” item. The mental strain you talked about is so real! And it is so sad too, because you shouldn't get anxious about what to use in your makeup collection, you should be excited of using the products. But instead, I do feel "guilt" of using one product over others that may be similar, thinking I haven't used that in a while. That is 100% fuelled by having too much choice. I've never had a massive collection, I think it was more than the average consumer (4-5 foundations, less than 10 pallets, less than 5 blushes, bronzers and concealers, few single shadows, eyeliners and and maybe 10-15 lipsticks - along these lines) but it was enough to stress me out! I have started feeling better since when I decluttered things that I bought when I was starting using makeup or once I figured out that I didn't really like them/they weren't flattering on me. It helps learning about your tastes and being more conscious for future purchases. I have just been enjoying my collection and purchased very little in the last year, while decluttering at the same time. It's just good for your soul, I feel like decluttering physical space is reflected in a mental declutter as well. Well done video, Jen :)

I think it’s so healthy to take a step back and really assess our levels of consumption on a regular basis. We have so much excess in our lives and that dopamine hit when we get something new and exciting pretty much always overshadows our practicality. It’s important to remember that purchasing a product is only the first step. Once you own something you now have the responsibility to use, store, repair, and eventually discard of that item. Now multiply that by the thousands of items we own, and that’s a huge mental load that we don’t even realize we are carrying! On a more specific note, I always find myself tempted by products that are “travel friendly” (all in one palettes, minis, etc) and then I remember that I travel maybe twice a year and when I do I take very little makeup with me and often end up going makeup free a lot of days. I just don’t have a lifestyle that justifies spending money or taking up space on these items.

I spent last year trying a lot of the things you recommended to find out why my makeup woes happened. Sometimes it was technique, other times it was a new product. Now I seem to have a solid set of products that work on my more mature skin. I have stopped watching other channels because of their pushy and elitist attitudes regarding brands. You have proven to me that you can have a very modest budget and end up perfectly happy with your results. At the moment I have a lot of unnecessary products that I will give away but I now know I can trust your evaluations. That means a lot to me. Thank you! ❤

Decision fatigue for sure. And constantly looking for the next best thing really impacted me up until 2024. I have forced myself to re-explore what I already have. Every time I use an old eye shadow palette…I remind myself that I don’t need one more new thing…I have more than enough options. In fact I didn’t purchase one thing during the Ulta or Sephora sales. I am going to lose Platinum status this year and will still save $ in the long run. And buyer’s remorse is real. I always felt bad that I purchased some eye palettes and blushes and was not satisfied with them. Nothing impressed me since it wasn’t something I truly needed. I gave them to my niece recently who cannot afford to experiment. I felt relief.

The beauty market is overloaded. New releases every single day... mean a lot of videos, and reviews, and seeing the products everywhere. It makes me feel a lot of the time I lose the passion and joy of buying stuff because I had enough of it before even using it 😀

Thank you for this chat and overcomsumption awareness video. I had thought about the new Natasha Denona warm palette. But then I heard this voice that stopped me from buying. This is something that I have been training myself recently is to stop buying what's in trend and fighting not to have an urge of buying trendy products. That's the same with my stationery items.

I have two things to say. First, coming from another country I find it weird that we “have to” stop ourselves from buying stuff in the U.S. Second, what if we collect all the unopened PR and just regular people like me would do a bidding for the new products and with that collected money we can help dog shelters or other human organizations. Just a great idea from Babsbeauty channel.

It is so weird, in the 1980s when I was a teen I had one foundation, one 4 color in grays and pinks Maybelline eyeshadow palette, 1 blush which I rarely used and some mascara. Now I for sure am overwhelmed with decision but I quickly learned that I was buying pink blush in 4 different brands that was the same color on my cheeks! I quickly switched to looking for colors that I would wear that were very, very different from what I have in my collection. Because it can look different in pans but on your face the difference is so subtle that there really isn’t a difference. Then I went 3 years not wearing makeup at all while I was taking care of people that were sick and lost my father, went to put on makeup for his funeral and my eyes and nose watered the entire time to the point that my eyelashes were wet. And not from crying. Suddenly I am allergic to makeup? I did have a new mascara so it wasn’t that. So I threw out all of my makeup, bought a round of new stuff and every single time I wear makeup my nose and eyes flow. I asked my doctor about this and he was like, well we could do the allergy test where they give you the test shot things in your back to try to find what specifically is causing it. I was like, and then I need all of the ingredients in every formula and what I am allergic to might be in everything? Ummmm, no. 😂 Sooooo when I wear makeup now I take a benedryal and hope for the best. It is better with the allergy medication, although I am now sleepy from the benedryal, my mascara still stays wet and I am kinda old enough now to not care much? 😂 thanks Jen! 💕

You might consider doing an elimination test: Use just one product on a day you aren't going out to see if you react. Go through all your products that way, including fragrances. I'm willing to bet you will be able to identify the culprit(s), and that fragrance in products is at least one of the problems.

Or maybe I am just old. 😂 I know those 3 years aged me more than I like to think about? My brother had cancer for 9 months of it and we thought we were gonna lose him for sure. We beat that but if he had waited any longer he wouldn’t have. And I go to the doctor when I barely have a boo boo? I told him if he ever did this to me again I was gonna make him regret it. Thank goodness they check him every 6 months at the cancer center. And then my Dad went downhill fast in about 6 months after my brother was cancer free. I think that the thing that is most helpful to me in terms of using RU-vid is to spend more time looking at the subscriptions tab (so that i don't miss content from creators that i enjoy) and less time on the home page (because I don't trust RU-vid to screen content for me appropriately). But maybe I am just a control freak and most people like to have the RU-vid algorithm making their decisions for them in terms of what to watch, I don't know.

Awesome video!! This is exactly how I have been feeling. About a year and a half ago I completely downsized my makeup collection. I gave away most of my makeup and only kept what I loved. I now have 3 quality eyeshadow palettes and that is more than enough for me. 2 blushes, 1 bronzer, 1 foundation, and 1 highlighter is perfect for me. The only 3 items I buy regularly are my brow products, mascara, and lipstick. I am not overwhelmed with a large collection. I am not wasting products and money, and best of all I am loving what I own🥰

I’ve gone on a ‘buy less, think more’ for the next year. I’m disappointed with how the prices are going up and up but the quality hasn’t gone up. I’m just tired of ending up not really enjoying what I buy because it doesn’t perform the same as some influencer’s. I’m using my stash, my favorite products, that haven’t let me down. I’ve really started saving money doing that. Finally enough is enough for me.

Excellent video, Jen! Everyone ought to watch this. You presented the cons of overconsumption so well and explained how we got here. You briefly touched on this but I think the biggest drawback to overconsumption is going into debt. Some people spend more than they have just to be trendy or to acquire something they don't have. This debt can be nerve wracking for some people, sometimes driving them into depression and despondency. I just read an article that showed a large majority of people in the USA are debt ridden. Thank you for discussing this important topic.

As others have said, this is an incredibly brave video to make, and it looks like the majority of us are SO GRATEFUL for this deeply wise content. Hi Jen, such a good topic, thanks for touching it upon ❤ I have the same feeling when it comes to YT beauty industry. 7-8 years ago when I first started watching YT tutorials, I used to watch in order to learn makeup, my makeup skills at the time were almost zero😁 I was enjoying to watch and learning at the same time. but over time makeup industry became so commercialized that nowadays most youtubers would film new products, new launches and follow the next trend. I understand the reason, but as a viewer who tries to save money it's stressful to watch those and hold myself from buying something that I liked. so instead I found small youtubers who mainly focus on creating eyeshadow looks and different projects like project pan, project level up, etc. not only it gives me the old YT vibe that I missed, but also it encourages me to use what I already have and not to spend more money on new staff 😊 thanks again, Jen, for this video.

Decision Paralysis is a thing I realized I had with so many streaming services. I don't know what to watch because there's everything to watch. The ND I Need a Warm is a throwaway palette that's not unique - but everyone lost their minds over it. The Patrick Ta Foundation, or Make-Up by Mario foundation. These are expensive products that people don't need YET. Finish what you have, then get the new. This idea that LATER is not as good as NOW is killing good products and companies.

So true!! Especially the tiktok video u showed where people think they need a new product but they already have a similar product, they just need a new technique 😔 not trying to push the blame on anyone but in my opinion the massive amount of beauty influencers are one of the main reasons for the increase in consumption in beauty. Totally agree. Spend way too much on new makeup and never really enjoy what I already have. I’m at a point where it’s actually become stressful because I have so much. Plus the money spent! I don’t even want to know. Never thought the day would come but I actually don’t want anymore. New releases don’t tempt me as much because I’m getting tired of it. Now I purchase something here and there but I think about for a while before I get it to make sure I’m actually going to use it.

Love when you talk common sense Jen. I cut way down and 80% of new makeup is drugstore now. I combo K beauty with high end for skin care. But it’s always quality over quantity for many of us these days!

Now I’m on a mission so use what I have for skincare and makeup, I do pick things up in TJ Maxx though every once in a while! Like BareMinerals or IT Cosmetics or Clinique or Morphe, etc. Or do a video like “Your top 10 favorite less talked about/ makeup” or “Makeup you keep repurchasing”. All I see are videos about Tower 28, Caliray, or other “clean” beauty brands. I’m in a point in my life where I’m not making makeup purchases and I’m using what I have. I just wish there were more videos about using makeup you already have. Anyway, thanks for this video!
