In this Havana walking tour, you will see the real Cuba that no one shows you in 2024. We will explore the areas most tourists rarely visit and also show you the popular tourist zones in the city.
Top Cuba Travel Tips:
1) Can U.S. Citizens travel to Cuba? Yes.
While flying to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute, there are 13 other permitted reasons for travel. The main reason most American visitors should choose is: 'Support for the Cuban people'.
2) Do US Citizens require a Visa? Yes
You can easily purchase the visa at a Cuban visa kiosk at your departure airport. The visa costs $50 - $100 depending on the airline. Just arrive at the airport a little earlier to fill out the form and obtain the visa which gives you 60 days in Cuba (with a possible 30-day extension).
Europeans and Canadians can obtain a Cuba Tourist Card which gives you 90 days in Cuba. You can extend your Cuban tourist visa for an additional 90 days, for a total of 180 days.
3) Do you need Health Insurance to visit Cuba? Yes
U.S. Citizens / Green Card holders who fly to Cuba directly via the U.S. are automatically insured because a $25 fee is added to your ticket price. Keep your boarding pass as proof of health insurance and if you do require medical assistance, you present your boarding pass and passport at the hospital in Cuba.
Everyone else (Canada/UK/Germany/Russia etc) can obtain cheap health insurance at Solways Cuba website.
4) Do US Credit and Debit cards work in Cuba? No.
With very few exceptions, U.S. credit and debit cards do not currently work in Cuba. You should bring U.S. dollars to Cuba and exchange them for Cuban Pesos (CUP). Make sure the US bills do not have any marks or tears as these may not be accepted. In addition, you can check the current informal foreign market rate in Cuba on the ELTOQUE website.
European and other debit and credit cards may or may not work in Cuba but you should not rely on this as you will get a very bad exchange rate using your card at the ATM or stores. It is recommended you bring Euros or US dollars.
5) How much cash should I bring? Recommended $50 to $100 a day.
Bring more cash than you will need as it is better to take home the extra dollars you didn't spend than to run out of cash in the middle of your Cuba trip. Many visitors have run out of money in the middle of their trip due to not bringing enough cash.
6) Can I get Internet access on my phone while in Cuba? Yes.
You can purchase a Cuban tourist sim card in advance of your trip and pick it up when you arrive at the airport in Cuba. Visit the SUENA CUBA website to order the SIM card.
7) Do I need a VPN for my trip to Cuba? Yes
Everyone should download a VPN (recommend NordVPN or Express VPN) on both your laptop and mobile phone BEFORE you travel to Cuba. This is because some websites and apps are blocked if you try to access them in Cuba. For example, you cannot book an Airbnb while you are in Cuba without a VPN.
8) How much is a taxi ride from the airport in Havana to the city center? $25
There are taxis outside the airport in Havana into the city and most will charge $25 US dollars. Make sure to ask and confirm the fare.
9) What essential items should i bring with me to Cuba?
Bring all your medication, toiletries (including female hygiene), body spray for mosquitos and sunscreen.
10) Can i stay in a hotel or Airbnb for my trip to Cuba?
Americans can book and stay in an Airbnb in Cuba but are prohibited from staying in certain hotels that are owned entirely or partially by the Cuban government. Choose: 'Support for the Cuban people' when booking your Airbnb. Europeans and everyone else can book both an Airbnb or stay in any hotel you wish.
11) Can I drink tap water? No, Don't do it.
Drink only bottled water and also use to brush your teeth. Also do not consume drinks with ice as they may also have been made from tap water.
12) What should I bring as gifts for the Cuban People?
Over-the-counter medication such as multivitamins, Ibuprofen, Tylenol / paracetamol. Female hygiene products. Bandaids. Personal care products such as deodorant, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste. Chocolates. Clothing. Shoes.

I love Cuba and most Cubans very much, but the country is bankrupt due to 70 years of Revolutionary mismanagement. Everything is broken or collapsing due to lack of maintenance; food, energy and medicine shortages; a lot of oppression and political prisoners and the dictatorial post-Castro regime mainly invests in empty hotels. The army (Gaesa) owns the hotels, banking, transport, shops, etc. Many Cubans are moving abroad and the country is aging. A tragedy in short!

@TripperTours
@TripperTours Месяц назад
It's one of the safest countries with strict penalties for messing with foreigners. I think you still dont grasp what Cuba is like despite watching the video. Wise / Apple-Pay / Revolut dont work. Going to Cuba is like time travel to the past where none of these things existed. There are no grocery stores like in the West, no McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks food delivery apps, no pharmacies with medication, etc etc. Here cash is King and you should bring more than you need so you dont run out.
@SuperDiagnostic
@SuperDiagnostic Месяц назад
@@TripperTours But cash must be available from the banks, no? Please forgive my ignorance but the thought of traveling with a months worth of cash at even $100 per day is significant and surely from what you say all would be aware of you situation as you arrive. @SuperDiagnostic
@SuperDiagnostic Месяц назад
@@TripperTours Okay.. I've now read the show notes and perhaps understand a little better where you're coming from.. I'm a UK/Irish citizen so perhaps things are not quite as strict. Just traveling with cash is an absolute no, no for me 😮‍💨
@TripperTours
@TripperTours Месяц назад
@@SuperDiagnostic Yes i understand there is some risk and even Cuba is not as safe as it used to be as there is 'bad and desperate' everywhere. Most people go for one week to 10 days and bringing $1k USD should be enough and not a huge risk. Now if you are visiting for longer like 1 month then you will have more time to do stuff and not in a rush like a 1 week visitor so your budget might come down to $50 or even $30 a day. Cuban banks will not give you cash as far as i am aware but even if you want to visit a bank to tryto get cash, you will be looking at standing in a queue for several hours. f you watch this and my other Cuban videos, you will see long queues outside banks which may or may not have cash....and even if they do, by the time you waited 5 hours and its your turn, the cash might have run out. And you have to try again tomorrow. Same with ATMs in Cuba, many do not have cash or if they do, you need to stand in long queues and depending on who you bank with and the ATM, you have or may not get any cash. Now even if you are successful in getting cash from the bank or an ATM, you will get the official government rate currently 1 USD = 24 Cuban peso. The unofficial black market (cash is king) rate is currently 1 USD = 380 Cuban peso! That is a huge difference in your spending power with bringing cash.
@TripperTours
@TripperTours Месяц назад
@@SuperDiagnostic I am from the UK too and i bring all the cash i need. Of course i have my bank cards with me for emergency only but routinely going to an ATM and getting only 6% and losing 94% of the money i receive by not bringing cash is almost criminal to me.

I was told that only those who left Cuba before 1959 are allowed into the island. In Havana, despite the ugly panorama and the bad smells, people who pass through the stench react normally. Dirt has become so familiar in Havana that what is surprising are those blocks where cleanliness, painted facades and order mark the difference with the rest of the city. People seem to have become accustomed to living with filth due to the inability of the authorities to collect it in time. RU-vidrs insist on showing images of such a disgusting capital. Garbage is also the way of survival for many. The popularly called “divers” (people who look for things in the garbage, as a way of life) look in the containers for raw materials to sell, empty perfume bottles to refill and scam some unsuspecting client, food waste to feed the pigs. , pieces of appliances that can be used to repair others and even clothing that helps protect you from the breeze and humidity during the early mornings. Where some see waste, others find their livelihood. Garbage in Havana is also one of the most obvious ways to measure the state of the Cuban capital's economy. During the crisis of the 90s, landfills only had what could no longer be used for almost anything. Not even pieces of old wood made it into the garbage bins because people used them to light fires for cooking. Finding food scraps in the trash was a miracle in that Special Period, and it is something that is making a comeback in the 1920s of the 21st century.

Why people keep repeating the nonsense that housing is free in Cuba!? It is NOT! You're etheir the owner of the house you paid for decades ago (or your parents) or, if it's a relatively new house (which is not widespread), you pay every month for years certain amount until fully paid. There's no mortage options like in the West, but that doesn't mean housing is free.

The misery that ordinary Cubans suffer because of the tyrant Fidel Castro is very great and widespread, it is not just a sector of the population, it is almost everyone. When you visit Cuba as tourists, go to the homes of ordinary Cubans, bring hygiene products (soaps, deodorant, detergent, medicines, healing materials and so on), and powdered milk and preserves so that the Cubans have eat, because there are many needs with food) because in Cuba there is a shortage of everything that is normal to buy for anyone from another country, even the most humble), and by the way, ask who blames the misery they are suffering and how many members of their family have emigrated, so they can see how divided Cuban families are. And by the way, ask if they wouldn't want to leave Cuba too. By the way, they can go alone, without their partner, in Cuba what is left over is cheap sex everywhere that even serves as escorts, since Cuba today is a large international brothel, like never before 1959.

The patriotic mambisa poetess of Cuba, Dulce María Loynaz (who never bowed to the tyrant Fidel Castro and died with dignity in 1998 at the age of 95 in Cuba) speaks about the destruction of Havana: "Those who did not see it will never be able to imagine what Havana was like at that time: a small Vienna, a miniature Paris, an extract of Buenos Aires, without the dullness or so many wide and colorless streets. Because Havana was all that, color, splendor, refinement..." "Vedado was an essence, a spirit, a being melted into our being, that when we lost it, it was not without feeling that we were already ceasing to be ourselves a little, and even disregarding these subtleties of sensitivity... How to forget that transcript of marbles and gardens, of shady trees and filigree-worked iron fences! And then that smell of basil and rosemary that was its smell and I have never smelled it again. As I write I realize that I am writing in a vacuum. How to make those who would come later believe that Vedado was a luxury that a city could afford and with the city a small country where there were no mass exoduses, no assaults on embassies, no persecuted people or persecutors, ,,!" "El Vedado no longer exists, just as there is no such thing as Pompeii or Palmyra. Just as Macchu Picchu does not exist. But these at least owed their destruction to the rolling of centuries or to the tremendous forces of Nature, still imposing and grandiose in their power of annihilation. Carthage itself was devastated by the men who fought its war, foreigners in it. Instead, our Vedado was buried alive by the stupidity and greed of men born under its same sky."

Cuba before 1959 had a GDP greater than that of Spain and Italy, which is why it was compared with developed countries, never with the countries of the geographical region where it is located. Today, as an attempt at consolation, even the Castro henchmen themselves compare it with Haiti, with the Brazilian favelas and in more desperate cases, with African countries. Cuba under Castro regressed to the economic levels of the early 20th century, when it had just liberated itself from Spain. And the Cuban government paid its debts before 1959, now it doesn't even pay them, the Castro tyranny is considered a bad payer, that's why no one wants to give it credit, we already saw it in the trial in London. And all this, despite the fact that the tyrant Fidel Castro turned Cuba into a Soviet neocolony that allowed him to receive a multimillion-dollar subsidy that he squandered on his international messianic obsessions to satisfy his excessive egotism, promoting organizing and financing guerrillas and subversive groups in Latin America and participating in wars in distant countries such as Africa. The progress under Batista is not only in figures: it is in his own works. You just have to stand in the Plaza Cívica (called today "Plaza de la Revolución") and look at all the buildings around it (including the Plaza itself), or the multiple "partitions" that arose as a result of the accelerated growth of the middle class (at tyrant Fidel Castro only needed five years to disappear that middle class in Cuba and impoverish it). Look in Cuba for great works built during almost 65 years of Castro tyranny and you will not find any, because the few things he built (except hotels for foreigners) were of poor quality and some are in a dilapidated state. Not to mention that with Batista the Cubans enjoyed more freedoms than under the tyrant Fidel Castro, that he has been the greatest repressor of the freedoms of the Cubans that postcolonial Cuba will remember.

I’m baffled if Cuba had 2.5 million visitors why is not the revenue from tourism going back to the Cuban people where and who is receiving that money politicians don’t take a walk or drive where Cubans are living in complete squalor? I mean where there is garbage there will be rats , etc and diseases. I mean I am amazed to not see dogs rats or cats with the garbage
