In his talk, Sean discusses four primary ways men have historically been raised in American culture - home, church, military, and sports. Sean’s talk focuses on his claim that sports are becoming the primary way American men learn critical lessons about work, determination, failure, and accountability, leading him to challenge listeners to rethink the true value they assign to sports.
Sean Adams, a former NCAA All-American athlete, turned his love of sports into a life working with others through the medium of sports. Each afternoon he hosts the top-rated show “The Adams Theory” on the Longhorn Flagship Station and ESPN affiliate - AM 1300 The Zone. He is also a television analyst for football and track and field for ESPN and The Longhorn Network.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Being overweight in school, I didn't win much in sports but I always participated. My mom always used to say, "it doesn't matter if you win, participation is important" Rn, I'm the captain of my college team and I'm glad I didn't give up and took up sports. And NYXS is helping me nurture my talent even more. Thanks to sports and my mentors

I had a really strange upbringing in sports. The only competitions I ever won in, I won. All the way up to the national stage. All in high school. Literally undefeated in my 4 years. That was a heavy burden to carry during the time, but since then it’s made me super sensitive to failure in my real life. I love competing. I learned to love winning. I only knew winning. And life came and I learned what failure felt like at its fullest extent. Those happy moments in my life will always be happy and full of amazing memories. But man I wish I was a bit more normal in my upbringing. Perhaps I would’ve been ready for the real world. I taught at a school later on and the kids taught me a valuable life lesson: how to not be perfect and be happy. These kids would come in 3rd and celebrate over the moon. That 3rd place trophy as a staff member means more to me than any of my regional and national titles serious. It’s so much more than winning. Yes it’s AWESOME but there’s a deeper level of joy that comes from sports. It provides kids a way to be happy. It provides everyone a way to be happy. I grew up as a NE pats fan (I’m from NE) and let me tell you some of those Super Bowls mean more than the world to me given the timings. Sports is a lot more emotion than most give credit for. Sports teaches us life lessons. I’m a fiercely competitive spirit and don’t know where I’d be without sports in my life. That’s for sure.

thanks for giving this information. I know about sports but you give me another great information related to my interest. He said about four way of Barbados raising men in this country, such as, in a home, in a church, in a military, in a sports respectively. He described this all ways and gave an example about himself, he won the race by understanding. He faced lots of problems, he failed many times.

Thank you for this podcast. It really helped me realize how important sports is in todays time. Not only is it just a game but it teaches life long lessons. My question to this is do you think there will ever be a time where sports will not be as popular in the future?
@davidwashington9347
@davidwashington9347 2 года назад
That is a great question. I feel like sports have a longevity to it. Sports used to be used to determine cultural status and over time has turned into a monopoly. If the sports industry is expanded as more than a business, we can bring a bigger purpose to it. Sports is usually exploited as pro-athleticism but has forgotten some of the core values for human beings. It should be used to genuinely uplift and invite people to challenges. Challenges that will allow the people to gain wealth within themselves. Health is definitely wealth, so imagine how much people will be motivated to get through life. This can expand people's creativity, humility, self-respect that we may forget due to the daily hustle of life that we believe in. Sports should be a statement and message first before money and fame. Sports should highlight not just athletic accomplishments, but also examples of the rehabilitation of the mind and body. Further introducing mental health within sports can allow us to step back and reassess why we use sport and play. I feel that with the activism we do have today, sports will become everything that I just mentioned and more. Just like the music industry, which is changing rapidly. Artists are finally taking over not just the industry but their genuine craft. Many are even taking back their intentions and finally working to make clean money without having to hustle in ways a minimum wage worker wouldn't, and receive only 25% of earnings. Some artists get 15% or less, and they're not just paying a Geico bill. I look forward to seeing everyone reclaim their rights to their passions. Hopefully we will see Sports in a more expansive and fulfilling light within our lifetime.

You can also learn all of those things in real life, working on some USEFUL project. Sports don't repair anything and don't manufacture anything. They're not even like an art, which at least may end up teaching you something or making you feel some way you needed to feel. Sports are an unfortunate distraction and addiction in which many resources are unjustifiably spent. Great stadiums are built while school kids suffer cold in Winter. Not to mention brutal sports like boxing, which should have been forbidden ages ago. The only advantage of sports is the benefit of some of them for health.
@comrade6118

Sports is entertainment in the end just like movies & videogames (sports aren't the only thing resources are spent on), but some are willing to use it as lifestyle & a hobby to learn life lessons but yes, you're right that you can learn all those things elsewhere. I feel like what matters is what you desire to pursue in life.

Pitiful! American is # 27 in education and we decide to focus on sports? Pitiful! When the Chinese take over remember all the games we won and lost. Pitiful!
@ryderwashington4199

Ok, let's see if China can take over anyone for that matter. USA maybe #27 in education, but America produces some of the smartest people to have ever lived. Bill Gates never went to college, he's also a part of the decline in education, but guess what? He's one of the most intelligent people we have today, and he's American. People keep saying BS about USA, but at the end of the day overall Americans are just as intelligent or more advanced than the rest of the world.
@leewonwoo9513
@leewonwoo9513 7 лет назад
lmao u make no sense just bc Bill Gates is genius, it doesnt make every Americans smarter. Like what u r saying is Trump or u are really smart which is definitely wrong. If all the Americans were smart af, they wouldnt choose that president and education is mostly about intelligence and the reason that they are advanced
@ryderwashington4199
@ryderwashington4199 7 лет назад
Wonwoo Lee See, this is exactly what I mean. Your argument was contradicting itself. Education does not equal intelligence, education is basically obedience. Americans voted for Trump, not because they're dumb, because they're racist. Huge difference. Hatred is what drove them to choose Trump, besides he had less popular votes than Clinton. Only reason he won was because he was a Republican, and if you paid attention to politics a year back republicans were the majority in the house of representatives. Therefore they voted for him.

i understand how sports can be pivotal in the lives of many people, but this is bs. while sports are important to learn how to manage faliure, develop determination and it can help young people to create deep bonds easily, they're nowhere near the irreplaceable foundation that "raises men" and makes them good people, nor an essential part of development. does it help? yeah. is playing for a team essential? nah. good things may come out of it, but being immersed in sports (which, many times, takes over a lot of other areas in people's lives) isn't a basic pillar for manhood... or somehig like that.
