Russell Westbrook was lights out before the arrival of Harden and now he’s miserable.
So it’s gotta be because of him right? Aaa take a close look here.
Harden himself penetrates and flips it back out to Russ who’s completely wide open, but he misses.
Again, on the drive, you see how the defense shrinks around the Beard and he makes the right pass to Westbrook with nobody near him and all the time in the world but he misses again.
This is from the same game, Harden would have dribbled back and forth here for who knows how much, but he sees his buddy in the corner open again. And another miss.
In transition against the Knicks, it’s the same exact thing.
A large majority of his 3 for 14 from downtown with Harden on the team were clean looks like this. So you already know that the difference in percentages is most likely a statistical anomaly from a bad shooter like Westbrook.
Look at PG and Kawhi’s numbers and you see the same drop in percentages, but even Paul George took similar type of shots that he always does if you actually dive deep into his shot attempts.
So as much as he’s become the punching bag ever since the trade, Harden is not the only problem.
James himself offered a potential solution: I GOTTA SHOOT THE CATCH AND SHOOT
And yeah, these are a few examples where you see him hesitating, but in terms of the efficiency, he’s actually ok.
The problem with him however is this:
Look at the amount of dunks and layups going down for Harden each and every year.
From 12, now to only 3 per 100 possessions. A 4 time decrease.
Fans might remember his killer stepbacks, but his bread and butter and what made him unstoppable was in fact getting to the rim. And from there he either scored or got fouled.
The decrease in free throw attempts per game is also huge.
11 attempts from the line in 2018-19, to 6.2 last year in a full season with Phily to 3.4 in limited sample size right now with the Clippers.
Right here you see that the speed and the explosiveness is absolutely gone.
And while teams used to guard him from behind a few years ago because they knew he would blow by defenders anyway, right now it’s a way tighter contest on the shots, because opponents know that he doesn’t have the same speed.
This happened to Allen Iverson, to Carmelo Anthony, to many other superstars.
It’s no big deal to get older and lose the quickness.
But when you still wanna be the same ball dominant player, and not adjust, not move without the ball, never set any screens, nothing…Then you’re basically a net negative type of player.
And funny enough, it was the same scenario for AI, Melo and now for Harden.
This is exactly why Philly got much better by just getting rid of him, and exactly why the Clippers are where they are at the moment.
Let me know what you think. Subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

It’s all part of the same bigger problem really. Harden has never been an off ball player or a good defender and now that his athleticism is declining and he can’t bulldoze to the rim as easily, a smart player would try to incorporate off-ball cuts to maintain his threat inside (one of the main ways D Wade remained effective after all his injuries despite never developing a reliable jumper). Harden has never been an effort or IQ player and without his athleticism to cover for that he’s gonna have to learn some things if he wants to be effective at this stage

It's not just getting older with Harden. He openly talks about how he didn't have a summer training camp and is only now working his way into game shape. That is 100% on him. He's making $33 million this season and was unwilling to put in the kind of offseason work that every other legit superstar puts in to prepare themselves for the season, and it shows. It's also not the first time he's done this. I generally loathe when people complain about athletes being "lazy" or not hard working, because these guys are the most elite athletes on the planet, but Harden has shown a penchant the past 5 years for coasting on his mid 2010 skills and reputation. He's a formerly great player who deserves every bit of scrutiny for the way he's brought chaos to every team he's recently played for.

oh definitely, superstars tend to be guys who need a rhythm and a feel for the ball to get in a good groove, but adding a very ball dominant table setter is going to be an adjustment for these guys when more of their possessions are going to be catch and shoots with minimal if any dribbling into their shots. shooting is a multi-part skill.

Harden is such a rhythm killer for every other person on the floor, his 'system' doesn't allow anybody else to get in a groove. Its been the problem his entire career, he used to be elite so his isolation scoring almost made up for it. Also, when one player refuses to contribute or do anything at all when he doesn't have the ball, it doesn't inspire anybody on his team to play hard. It does inspire the other team because they know its essentially 4 on 5.

@ShuraMahaaken
@ShuraMahaaken 7 месяцев назад
Like others have posted, getting into a rhythm matters for shooting. Harden turns everyone else on his team into spot up shooters which effects their rhythm. Harden's over dribbling makes it hard for everyone else to anticipate when the ball is coming. The ball will come, it just comes at a different time every possession which messes up their shooting rhythm. You have 4 players who all need the ball to do their thing. There's just not enough ball to go around

You can get away with being a crappy shooter when you're a good passer and rebounder, but only if you don't try to score much. The problem is he took way too many shots. If you have a low shooting pct and you take a lot of shots, the team is doomed. Plus he had a tendency to miss easy layups and then look for a foul. The problem is that none of the guys he’s passing too are catch and shoot shooters so while yes he’s giving them open looks, it’s not like it a set action where as their moving they are catching the ball, it’s them standing on the three point line and watching the defence collapse so they have no rhythm. Now the clippers work better as Westbrook as the ball dominate one because pg and kawhi move well without the ball, allowing Westbrook to control the pace and feed them, harden has the Lebron effect where he needs the ball so that he can go downhill and force the defence to collapse. And since that is usually an iso type of play it hurts the clippers more then it helps

In the end its about rhythm and touches. Guys who were playing well before the trade especially russ, PG and Kawhi dont have that rhythm anymore consistently. Hard to move the ball between 4 guys who are past their prime.

It's terrible to see the difference of physical shape between prime Harden in Houston and Harden now. He has 10 more kilos. He cannot go to the rim any more, unfortunately. He did not take care of his body this last few years.

You have Russ who isnt good off the ball, in fact he's really bad. So Russ needs the ball, but he hasn't adjusted his game either. Russ should embrace a role where if he gets the ball he pushes it up the floor and looks to set up guys. And then focuses on D.

Harden demands all his teammates become spot up shooters while he runs the offense. It happened in houston, nets, philly, and now la. The problem is Harden never wants to become a spot up shooter himself. And this isn't vintage Harden from the rockets days. He's a declining fast.

Seriously, back in the days when you managed to get into the zone, you would usually either make a jumper, floater or find your other teammate who might be even closer to the basket to make an higher percentage shot. Instead, players nowadays penetrate inside but still kicks it out frequently. Don't tell me a 3p shot is easier to make than one within 4 m range.

Go look at the analytics. What’s more points. 2s at 50 percent shooting? Or 3s at 40?
@maxmeier532
@maxmeier532 7 месяцев назад
a) that depends how crowded the paint is b) if you are playing against a big team and c) how good the shooter is. Even half decent players shoot 35% from 3 and even the best players outside of dunking it are about 60-70% in short jump shots at best. Do the math. That tilts further to the 3 Point choice, when the the ball handler pulls the defense and a guy outside is wide open. Uncontested 3 vs highly contested 2 is an easy choice, you always go for the 3, unless you're a big guy- which Harden isnt compared to who he is playing. All that gets aggravated when you play against the Nuggets, Spurs, Lakers or OKC because of their top grade big defenders.

Russ,Beard,Powell,Bones. One of them is just not needed here and is just not gonna get used enough and properly. Dysfunctional roster that requires trades. Putting Beard or Russ on the bench wont help them with their goals, some trade needs to go down. I still cant believe they gave up all that for Beard and PJ...

The difference between kd and ky together with pg, kawhi, and russ. Is kd and ky can make shot. Now, pg, russ and kawhi can also make shot but they're not used to being so wide open that's why they're having a problem making shots if you watch there whole game together those guys just can't make easy shots that's why they're losing compare to james when james got the ball wide open his making shots from them. This is what people don't see

Harden doesn't defend well or does it so poorly that he becomes a net negative player and hence will keep losing to anyone. He's replacing Covington who had a very good +/- and even Bones Hyland had a +8 for the one game he started.

Ppl keep saying it's a small sample size, which on the surface it is. H/e these are the same players we've seen for a decade & a half just bc the environment changed doesn't mean the player has. We have a career worth of examples that show Harden & Russ don't change. They're trash off ball, Russ is a bad shooter at his best & terrible at his worst, Harden will be great one game & the next handful look like he doesn't give af, etc etc. They are who they are just slower & older

Honestly Harden's biggest flaw is his own ego. At a point you have to realize that being overconfident isn't the path to success. If Harden ever actually wants to get close to gold, he's gotta drop the "me first" mentality. You're not top 5 anymore James, if you double team him anymore it's a guaranteed turnover.
