Poor Desmond was accidentally shot by a friend when they were riding around in a car. The large mausoleum was very unwelcoming. But the cemetery was amazing to wander through with you. Many thanks from Australia.
The plot with the flag. The couple buried there died the same day. He was 1923-2010, and she was 1924-2010, both December 9, 2010. It seemed he was a doctor and devoted his later life to taking care of his invalid wife. He refused to leave her side when there was a fire in their home, and they both perished.
"We're in" right along side of you Ron!! I love anything to do with cemeteries, but the old Mausoleums are SO cool. How nice of you to say some of their names again, they may not have been said in a long while. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, thanks again!
What a honor to have a plane named in your honor that served valiantly in wartime. Beautiful woman RIP Margaret and all those who sacrificed for us 🙏💗🕊️. Thanks for putting in pictures and/or info when you can find it on the random graves you see 👏👏👏👏
Nice job as always Ron. I had the honor of meeting Capt. Morgan many years ago at an air show in Reading Pa. He was very interesting I’ll leave it at that. God bless Margaret ,she was a great person for doing what she did to save the Belle. Her and the plane and her crew shouldn’t be forgotten.
The young soldier Desmond--his grave touched me. So young. There's no greater honor for us Americans then for a soldier to give his life for us. Bless you Desmond.
I remember that mausoleum very well I remember seeing Elvis being brought into that mausoleum after his funeral on TV in 1977. Great storytelling on Margaret Polk and the Memphis Belle ♥️♥️✝️✝️💕💕💐💐🌹🌹
I so like the way you walk the cemeteries, and pause to see the stones, giving snippets of information when it's available. Your voice is calm, and clear, making it easy to understand what your saying. There is so much history, and educational value in cemeteries for everyone. I knew about the Enola Gaye, {hope I didn't misspell} but little of the Memphis Bell. Margaret was a lady, and a go getter. I love that era, the ladies dressed like ladies, and men wore suits. Everyone looked like a million bucks. Thanks Ron
What a beautiful cemetary♥️ The history and the stories behind their origin🌞 I agree sad when people disrespect a cemetary/ memorial 🤔🤬 Thanks for taking us along on this journey with you today. Your merchandise is awesome. 😊🌞
I grew up in Memphis, and now live in Chicago. Thanks for bringing me back home :) If you haven't already, I would highly recommend a trip East to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA. Some incredibly old headstones there going back hundreds of years. There's a section there called "Authors Ridge", and there you'll find the likes of Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. A beautiful cemetery that's very fitting of the name Sleepy Hollow.
They had the Memphis Belle bomber on display at Mud Island sometime in the mid 70s I think and I got to see it up close, those guys had balls of steel man! They have my highest respect! Thanks for the video!
I saw it on Mud Island and spoke to the veteran who stood ‘guard’ back in the late ‘90s. They were raising funds to get a building erected to protect it.
A beautiful Cemetery and old Mausoleum are so stately it's great to see, Thank you Ron! May their souls rest in peace, In Tennessee look out for Johnny Cash!
one of my fav's...just didn't stop in Nashville...next time! I really want to visit Jerry Reed...and Cash's Luther, that guitar! I think they are all at the same cemetery.
The D Day museum in New Orleans is amazing! I purchased a brick with my dad’s WWII on it. He was in the second wave that landed on Omaha Beach, 29th division 116 infantry, 97% fatalities. He was one of only a handful that survived…
Beautiful story done with respect and grace. Thank you. What happened to him?. Though they didn't marry I'm glad they remained friends. Glad the plane was saved.we lost a lot of treasure due to the lack of care. We need to do better. Preserving history. Glad u shared this. I enjoyed it.you always leave me with a smile.🙂 stay safe. Love respect and positivity always neita james. 👍💯💜🦋🌠🌻✨🖐.
Hi Ron, what a great story, I never knew the history of how the Memphis Belle got her name before today. Talking about going through the ground and into a coffin, that is pretty much what a friend of mine had happen to him, he is in actual fact a RU-vidr and his channel name is Exploration Unknown, he goes to various places doing abandoned etc and he also does paranormal investigation's. He was at a really old cemetery in Tennessee just walking and talking when he fell through and it was during a livestream I believe, he was mortified. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx💖
Thanx for another great one Ron :) I love how you go slow and enjoy the beauty of it all. Just like life, its the journey that matters not the destination.
Thank you for this story. I knew Robert Morgan personally. My father was a WWII Vet and he was a friend of my Daddy's. Mr. Morgan was well known in our hometown of Asheville NC. And I might add well loved and respected. Patricia Gambino Harrington
I believe the correct quote is: “A coward dies a thousand deaths, the Valiant dies but once.”....I may be wrong but that is how I heard it over 50 years ago in a play I helped with in high school titled “The Valiant”.
The saying similar to yours , I heard back in 1977. That made a big difference in my Life. A coward dies a Thousand deaths, a brave man dies only once. I had it framed and put up. You wouldn't believe how many people ask me what that meant.
@@nancycurtis488 More appropriate, as "valiant" is a more general term for brave men than "soldier", which is very restrictive. Besides, there are many cowardly soldiers.
Sir, I have thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thank you very much for making this real! I really appreciate the time and effort you undertake to bring these locations to us, especially to non-Americans like myself who do not readily have the ability to explore these areas within your country.
Hello, just a quick note to thank you for your respectfulness at these cemeteries. Some people are just plain rude and disrespectful. My Mother is asleep at Schapper Rock Cemetry In New Zealand and we have found families playing ball around her grave, very upsetting. So thank you. Jane in New Zealand
Ron, I am so glad you created this channel, I have learned so much just from watching your video's of people long ago and some not so long ago. I always look forward to watching the new video's you post. I enjoy seeing all those old and interesting gravestones and mausoleums you find. And I especially like the information you tell about those people. Thank you for everything you do to make these video's to share with us all.💜🙂
Could the castle-like vault be a winter storage for the deceased to rest? Winters don’t allow for easy burial with snow and cold temps making it tough to dig. I’m from Massachsetts originally and those keeping vaults are no longer used but some are still around.
Another BRILLIANT video!! I never knew Elvis wasn't originally buried in Graceland to start off with!! I bet the cemetery was overwhelmed by the sheer number of fans wanting to visit the grave, never mind having to deal with the 24/7 security needed!! Also found the Margaret Polk story really INTRIGUING!! Thanks again for the GREAT video, Ron!! Take care, and stay safe!!
Beautiful story about the couple and Memphis Belle and how she stayed attached to the plane throughout her life. I love the very old mausoleum high up on the hill. I really hope it doesn't further deteriorate. Such beautiful features and architecture. It was so haunting and beautiful. I love to see old buildings that look different from everything else around them. It is special.
How has that chapel been left in disrepair? It’s such a shame! I know it costs money, but it’s part of the cemetery. Beautifully filmed as always, I love your channel so much. You give us so much history, and take your time filming so we can see the quality of the brickwork/statue, etc. Lovely to hear the story of the Memphis Belle. Thank you to all the service men and women who gave up their lives so we can live ours in peace. Thanks for all your hard work , it really is appreciated 💓😊💓
I have heard of the Memphis Belle but never knew the history behind it. I did enjoy another history lesson. I did like those mausoleums. The abandoned one really has some nice architecture. God bless to all the soldiers that lost their lives to keep our freedom.
Not sure if someone else mentioned this. The empty stone building was a keeping vault where coffins were kept in the winter when the grounds were frozen. Really cool building. I hope they fix it up and put up some sort of informational marker to explain the purpose of it and why it is vacant.
Memphis Belle is a beautiful name no words can express the heartfelt gratitude for those young men who flew to my homeland England to fight tyranny and evil. Cant imagine being an eighteen year old ball gunner the courage is astounding. God bless all the service men and women who are still serving today and were in years gone by.
Love your channel, I always loved even as a child wandering through a graveyard looking for history and stories. It was always so peaceful, thanks for your journey and stories
You made a new fan! My hubby had to see this one because the Memphis Belle was mentioned in it and right at the same time you said they were the first to fly 25 missions, he said it at the same time. We honestly love these and you put so much into them ty.
My Great-Grandmother is buried there 🕊 Haven’t been there in years but it doesn’t look much different. I’m so glad I found Faces of the Forgotten& A big 👏🏼 for always being respectful. It’s got to be tough telling some of the stories. Keep Up the Good Work ⭐️
Thank you for these videos so people are never forgotten and they are remembered by those who watch. Perhaps one day when I'm gone someone will do this for me . Thumbs up my man for being so respectful to all these people who are resting in peace.
Elvis was at that cemetery & they moved him to Graceland because they had to have security guards there 24 hours a day so nobody would attempt to steal his body
There had to be swarms of people trying to touch his grave! Even when Elvis was alive everyone tried to grab him to get what they could from him as a souvenir. So glad he can rest in peace with his family in Graceland 😎
@@melanieiwasko4393 .. I have no idea why people would steal his body. I never liked him and could never respect him from stories I heard about him. But he was looked at like he was some of a god during his time I do realize that as well. I am happy he is with his family where he should be and everyone who passes should be. I just never seen him as a person with morals ever. He was just a good performer for those days.
@@deannaharby5677 ... So sad, there is no reason to steal a deceased person in my view. Grant it, I never liked him as a person but people should respect the deceased.
You made it to Memphis! The Memphis Belle was on Central Ave. for many years, then displayed at Mudd Island before she was taken to Dayton. I was worried when you entered the mausoleum! Elvis was there before they buried him at Graceland. Very interesting as always!
I always wondered about the Memphis Belle. Thank you taking us here. Your special trip for the young boy was such a moving story. He was so loved and his monument is beautiful.💜💞💜
Wonderful story. I didn't know this. Thank you for doing so much research on these. I have had a stroke and have forgotten so much, I appreciate good research.
@@natalieangelo54 - yeah it’s weird, there was no stone there for him that I could find. Quite a mystery. I’m sure a local person there knows about him.
The boarded up structure is called a Keeping Vault. When they used to dig graves by hand, during the winter the ground was frozen and they couldn't, so they would keep the dead in that "Keeping Vault" until the ground would thaw in the spring and they could then bury them.
I love all the videos you do. I’ve seen almost all of them, sometimes I comment other times I don’t. I must say I love reading the comments it most times adds to the story the history of personal encounters or from the areas. Thank you Ron, I wait all the time for your new videos you truly add to my day.
That was cool I didn’t know Elvis was originally laid to rest there I been to the one in Graceland. It’s a weird feeling looking at all those crypts knowing there hundreds of bodies above ground behind each marble shutter.
Hometown Memphian here. I have visited Forest Hill many times. The mausoleum has a very creepy vibe, not from anything paranormal but from the thought of getting mugged in it. It is a shame because it is such a historic place.
Such a beautiful building, they really need to do something to restore it. They don't build them like that anymore, sad to say. Buildings like that need everything possible done to them to make them whole again.
That was a brilliant walk through.I loved the old buildings and so wish they could be preserved because the architecture is beautiful and historical in their own right. These buildings are supposed to represent places of respect, remembrance and of quiet contemplation. Ideally there should be local “Friends of” groups for Community Cemeteries to help maintain and fundraiser when government funding shortfalls occur so local history is not lost forever. Local school involvement for walk through educational tours would help demystify a Cemetery - after all these Cemeteries are the final resting places of people who have helped make their Country and Community what it is today and they all contributed in their own way regardless. Memphis Belle? FANTASTIC! Just love that I learn so much your efforts. God Bless you and yours and as usual Thanks ever so much.❤️🐨🇦🇺
I found that lovely, boarded up structure on a Historic Memphis site. Seems it was a Receiving Vault where bodies were kept until burial, and hasn't actually been used as a crypt. Which scares me a bit to think of people walking around on that if the floor is giving way! I do hope they restore it some day, it is quite beautiful.
If your ever going through Memphis again you should visit Elmwood Cemetary. Its filled with lots of history and stories of people buried there. The monuments are amazing.
I love going to cemeteries and looking around at all the graves. I have been all over the world and seen graves that go waaay back to before the middle ages and Viking burial mounds, everything. Very cool and fun.
