So you can become a member on my RU-vid channel now (there’s a pun here somewhere…)

Napoléon Bonaparte. It's about time I dove into history, and what better person to do a video on than Napoleon. Please refer to my notes below for some more historical context and extra information, but for now... let me lead you into this video on Le Petit Caporal:
If you haven't already been interested in Napoleon, then the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix and Ridley Scott movie is probably gonna do it, so... let me chime in and give you a biography on Napoleon - not that it's needed, since Napoleon Bonaparte is the most written about person outside of religious figures, which... kind of makes him the actually most written about person. Napoleon was one of history's greatest conquerors - and not short, by the way - and literally an anime character come to life: From humble beginnings to being the most powerful person in the world - if Napoleon's life were a movie, you'd call it out for being unrealistic. Yet here we are, ready for the first episode of my new series:
Episode 1 of Blood - The Period(s) Of Conquerors
Le Petit Caporal: Napoléon Bonaparte
Notes:
There are some things I didn't touch on in this video, because there is only so much of Napoléon you can pack into 30 minutes, but... here are two things I would have loved to include so I am adding them here:
First: Napoleon was actually born as Napoleone Buonaparte and his first language was Corsican - he would always retain an accent when speaking French.
The other thing is that I don't really discuss the Peninsular Wars: Spain & Portugal vs Napoléon. They really would have blown this video out of proportion, so... just do know that it really went down on the peninsula.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

You are right about Napoleons height. He died while being held by the Brits. The British and French used two different measuring systems. After his death, the Brits measured him at 5’2”-3. When his body was returned to the French, he was measured at the correct 5’6”-7”.
@brianboru2762
@brianboru2762 9 месяцев назад
The way I always heard it was that the French Inch was bigger than the British Inch so when the French measurement system showed he was 5'-2" the British ran with the propaganda gold mine. It also didn't help that many of the portraits he himself commissioned had him with the Imperial Guard, the elite Infantry of the French army. To even qualify for consideration to joining the guard you had to be at LEAST 6' (British Inches) in height so an average-sized man among some of the biggest men France had to offer is going to look puny no matter what.

His height is really a moot point. The Army followed him because he proved over and over that he was a more capable leader than the Generals above him. His youth was spent reading about ancient warfare, strategy and logistics.He learned to study the land and choose the place of battle like the Greeks and Romans. He mastered the artillery, one of the most physically demanding and dangerous units to join. When asked to end the French Royalist Uprising; He warned: “Don’t ask me to do this”. “When I draw my sword, I won’t sheath it until I have crushed the Rebellion”

The majority of his marshals were from humble beginnings, raised up by their merit. His opponents still gave leadership positions based on social position. Granted, he elevated family members to command and thrones, so not entirely egalitarian.

From hating the French to becoming their emperor - that alone is a conquest! Napoleone Buonaparte, son of an originally Tuscan family, updating his name to sound more French, joining the army and becoming the father of today's military Corps, Division, etc, using the Julius Caesar playbook to take over France, beat up Europe, and actually came close to winning Waterloo despite even the weather up against him. He even defeated himself which led to his downfall as it all went to his head. That's winning.

And I don't mean historically accurate in a boring way: Check out the 1970 movie 'Waterloo' with Rod Steiger playing Napoleon, and assisted by 20'000 extras from the Soviet army, all trained in the tactics of the day.

Dude they literally skipped his entire Italian Campaign, the entire Leipzig Campaign, the entire 6 day Campaign, the ENTIRE PENINSULAR WAR, and they showed extreme inaccuracy in nearly EVERYTHING. He wasn’t at Marie Antoinette’s execution, he wasn’t a scared wimp at Toulon, and he wasn’t a guy who would slap his wife or his servant. He just wasn’t that guy. They tried to destroy his reputation and it had largely succeeded in modern culture, showing him as a short bloodthirsty angry wimp. I also remind you, the director is British.

@@wyattcole5452it’s not that it was a bad film. It’s that it could have been a great film. Gladiator is a great film. This was just good. Enjoyed the presentation, but there were a few issues. Two examples: 1) Napoleon didn't defeat all royalists in France, just the royalist mob that tried to attack the National Convention (government) in Paris in 1795. He actually refused a command to put down some royalists, which caused him to be removed from the rolls of active officers, which is why he was in Paris without a command when the attack happened. He was tasked by the government with gathering available troops and cannon, which he did and repelled the royalists with, "A whiff of grapeshot." This act is what got him the appointment as the commander of the Army of Italy. 2) As for Trafalgar, Napoleon was planning to invade England and gathered his armies in northern France, but couldn't gather sufficient transport or gain naval superiority to make it happen. Trafalgar happened months later when Napoleon had already moved his army to fight Austria and Russia in the Austerlitz campaign. Trafalgar established complete British control of the seas, but wasn't the reason Napoleon didn't invade England as portrayed. All in all, not a bad presentation despite the discrepancies. You managed to cover in 32 minutes what Ridley Scott failed to do in 2 hours and 38 minutes.

Also you were a bit off on Waterloo. His army was excellent (it was largely old veterans including the only time the Imperial Guard was beaten, he also had cavalry but Ney commanded them and Grouchy had them at Wavre too which was also Napoleon's fault), he was facing an inferior army initially but he and Ney made huge tactical errors prior to the battle at Ligny and Quatre Bras. He fought on Wellington's terms and could not break his line before Blucher arrived. Check out Clausewitz to read an "unbiased" (ie. not British) account of events.

😂 LOST IT!! I'm watching this video through the Playlist. The title & description A conversation with Daniel Radcliffe and Friend - DR: hey Friend, i was just thinking idk Napoleon's 1st name. Do you? Friend: uh, you serious rn? DR: yes Friend: Napoleon DR: yeah, Napoleon's 1st name Friend: it's Napoleon. Napoleon's 1st name is Napoleon DR: What! No way. His name was Napoleon Napoleon Friend: uh... (silent a bit too long with a questioning look) Friend: No. Not Napoleon Napoleon. Napoleon is his 1st name only not 1st & last Again, slightly too long silence with DR having a thinking face DR: Sooooo, just Napoleon like cher or madonna Friend: uh... no... Napoleon 1st name. Bonaparte last name Long silence then DR face shows understanding, lightbulb moment and he's finally getting that he just had an idiot moment so he starts laughing as does his friend

I Love History and I have an off kilter sense of humour. So when I Just found your channel I thought what a treat for Christmas! I'm going to save your videos (my dirty secret is having an earbud in listening to History etc whilst doing house chores stuff 😆) for when I'm doing Christmassy stuff for the kids. Great content, merci beaucoup from Ireland 🇮🇪✋

Napoleon is my favorite historic person. The greatest general. As Wellington said it: 'In this age, in past ages, in any age, Napoleon'.

Correction: Napoleon did not spend his early life dreaming of being in power. Spent it trying to get his family out of death as his father had died and left that was recalled by the government. He was a 2nd lieutenant for 5 years before becoming major, and THEN siege of Toulon. He was not a captain at Toulon.

I always proud that myself love from history subject from kid. People hate it maybe because lazy to read or remember so many stuff. But for me it's not only fact, it's more to inspiration and understand about perspective from people from the past. And more important it's take a lot of courage becoming a historian to tell a truth and defending it from any agenda. And now i love there are more people who are love history because of meme. It's good to see people take it seriously and want to learn, especially in current era
