Mike and Mark Patey are unarguably Aviation Rock Stars. But when you meet their better halfs (or halves??), you discover an instrumental ingredient to their success. Hope you enjoy this interview of Chandra Patey (married to Mike) and Suzy Patey (married to Mark), both of them experienced pilots in their own rights. They talk about meeting Mike and Mark, and some tense moments in the airplane, including the Draco crash last year. Enjoy meeting the Pateys!

I saw the video when Draco crashed. Mike was really taking responsibility for it all. BUT, what was THE best moment was when he said something to the effect that there were no injuries. Just then his fabulous wife came up, displayed a broken nail, and asked him what about that?? And then she gave him THE most loving hug and kiss any man has every been lucky enough to receive. I got all choked up then, and I have every time I see it, and I did again here. Ma'am, with you as a partner, there are NO limits to a man's joy!! Bless you sweet lady.. Not to slight Suzy at all. She is a gem in her own right. What you ladies have done is inspirational to us all. Thank you..

Suzy. I had a similar type of situation. I was full time with the Air National Guard working in flight ops. I got occasional back seat rides in our fighters. On one of my rides ( an F-100F) the pilot asked if I would like the standard vertigo demo and I agreed. He had me take the airplane which we flew with your wrist on your knee and your fingertips on the stick. He had me close my eyes then take my fingers off the stick. He told me that he was going to make a maneuver with the airplane and when he did I could open my eyes and correct the flight attitude. Well, what he was doing was very slowly rolling the airplane to the left. He then rolled the airplane back level, I opened my eyes and, in my mind, corrected the flight attitude. What I did was roll the airplane 110 degrees to the left and held my attitude. I felt perfectly fine but was a little amazed that the earth was in the wrong place. The thing that surprised me the most was how long it took me to realize what was going on. It took me an entire 15 seconds to get reoriented and another 5 seconds to regain control of the airplane. And that was on a clear, sunny day with a perfect horizon. I was so sure of my attitude that it never occurred to me to check my instruments. If I had been alone or at night I honestly believe that I wouldn’t have survived. Even after getting control of the aircraft it was at least a minute and a half of strait and level flying before I was comfortable again. Thank GOD you had Mark as your guardian angel and it was a learning experience instead of a tragedy. Please, keep flying and posting. You and Chandra make a great team. Love ya guys, Gary

I would not be anywhere without my wife’s hard work and support. I may be the one that everyone sees, and thinks is at the helm of our business, but she’s the real boss and I can’t imagine doing it without her. It sure looks like the Patey’s have a similar recipe for a fun and successful life. You ladies are awesome, and my family certainly hopes to have the chance to meet your family one day. 🤙🏼

Hi Chandra. I most of the times write to Mike´s comment section, spetially in the latest videos on building "Scrappy". However, in the only one I saw you by ironing the fabric on Srcppy´s tail, I thought "wat a lovely lady". Please ask Mike to get you more in his videos (if the timing is write, obviously), because I think that your precens gives it the "peace" that Mike hasen´t; he is a HURRICANE! I guess most of us viewers would apreciate it. It was very nice to meet you and Suzy. Thanks for sharing. My best wishes to you, Mike and your family from northeast patagonia, Argentina. I flew out to meet with Mike a couple years ago and I'll never forget it. Mike said we had to be quick as he was flying out to the top of mesa to camp with his wife that evening. I was inspired by his commitment and placing his wife before anything else. His love for Chandra was just radiant. They truly love each other and she is the sweetest lady. Those two funny guys wouldn't be where they without these wonderful, beautiful and strong women.

I had spacial disorientation on final into Key West. It was a dark night; no horizon. I hadn't planned to fly IFR, but flying by the instruments saved me. I'm pleased the Patey family is intact.

Listening to Suzy tell her story of her spacial disorientation sent shivers up my spine, knowing that she was flying with her children in the plane just gave me goosebumps. It was very fortunate for her that Mark was flying behind her and recognized what was going on and was able to assist her in getting the plane flying level and on the right course. While it's not exactly the same I got caught in a white out in southern Colorado driving on the interstate with my wife and children years ago at night, all I could see was the snow blowing across the front of my truck in my headlights from right to left while inching forward watching the tail lights of the car in front of me, I had no sense of forward movement, I was convinced that I was moving sideways due to the blowing snow, we crept along for hours like that until we reached an exit and pulled into a motel for the night. It was a terrifying feeling not knowing which way I was moving, but unlike Suzy, I could have pulled over and stopped in the truck, not an option when flying an airplane. Fortunately it worked out for both Suzy and myself, but I think I have a pretty good idea of what she must have been feeling at the time.

"you discover an instrumental ingredient to their success". You 100% nailed that one. What a great interview. Suzy Patey's spatial disorientation story was scary but when she talked about reviewing the GPS data that really amplified how bad it was. It would be interesting to hear Mark's take. He knew how bad it was. Can you imagine following your wife and family in another aircraft and seeing that happen? Talk about worst nightmare ever. I had a little spatial disorientation while flying my wife and kids "home" many years ago. Nothing like hers, just a little brain / instrument argument. Thankfully I heard my instructors telling me to trust my instruments. I choose not to fly night VFR to this day because of it. Especially now that most of my flying is out of KFMN. If you point the aircraft west there are no lights for a 100 miles or more. Shiprock is there. Sleeping Ute Mountain is there. One of the many great things that the YT aviation community brings us is pilot experience. I think it was Josh, maybe Nikko, maybe both that says - "we don't have to fly". I love you and Christy's interview style.

@MichaelLloyd
@MichaelLloyd 3 года назад
@@TakingOff I hope so. When She was telling her story I initially thought " yeah, I still remember that unsettling feeling when the gauges looked wrong". Then she talked about looking at the GPS track and Mark talking to her. That's when the light bulb came on. It wasn't good and he knew. I actually got goosebumps. I just finished a 950 mile drive from my home in TX to NW NM and this video and that story was on my mind a lot during the drive. Clearly they both handled it well but... wow... With all of the "stuff" we have to hear and see everyday right now it is nice to see that people like the Patey family exists. It's nice to see honorable, caring people

Aside from that "minor detail" that the most important part of my life is in danger in the plane in front of me, keeping the panic out of my voice as I'm trying to keep her "calm" would be my most difficult challenge. I would find it really difficult not allowing my voice to make her situation worse. I would imagine that's one of those memories that will forever remind them just how much they can depend upon each other when panic tries to set in and make things worse. Congratulations to both Patey's... really well done!!

Suzy, I had a similar experience to yours flying over Lake Michigan many years ago. I was flying along the shoreline around midnight when I decided to turn toward the lake. As soon as I was facing the lake with the shore behind me, I suddenly realized that everything outside was black. Up, down, left, right, everything was pitch-black. I was not instrument-rated at the time but I had some instrument training and knew to immediately turn my attention to the instruments. The hard part was when my body started telling me that the airplane was doing something different than the instruments were telling me. I fought the inclination to disbelieve the instruments long enough to get the airplane turned back toward the shore again and all was well. But it sure was a wake-up call. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so very happy that you and your family are safe.

There seems an easy, low ego, resonance between the brothers individually and also between their wives of nearly the same character. Theirs seems a success story of more than a pattern of action, but of core commitment to living life in support of family and interests....as life should be. What happened to her happened to Kennedy jr. In his case it turned into a steep spiral. Luckily she had Mark to get her bearings back. Great that you share this with the world. On a solo cross country I flew over the Chesapeake bay in a Piper Tomahawk. Visibility was good enough over land to see a horizon but over the water I lost the horizon at some point. Looking down I could see the water and ships but started to get vertigo. Luckily the aircraft had a turn and bank and attitude indicator. I reversed my heading on instruments and flew back. That was a lesson I always tried to convey to my students later. Also a motivator for people to get instrument rated.

Great video, love the interviews and the stories. Always interesting to to know the women behind who give support to the men in their lives. We now know where "sly fox " comes from. Thanks for sharing.

It was really fun. But I did tell Mike not to expect me to ever try to top it, that’s as much as I can pull off. It’s all down hill from there. 😅

I enjoy watching Mike and Mark's videos... Ans think it's awesome to finally get to really meet secret Patey pilots.... Other than just small clips like the ironing of Scrappy's flight controls...

Class attracts class! Wished I would have thought of that pick-up line back in 1973 when I was 23 hitting the "young adults" dances back then. Lol We used to have various BBQ and dances in Northern California. You bring the meat to grill yourself and the ward supplies the charcoal and you bring a dish or two to share. I'm sure Chandra and her sister-in-law can relate! I was double dating with another friend. While picking out our steaks at the grocery store, I saw a "beef tongue" and decided to purchase it as well. Everyone looked at it and it was: "Ewwwww!" We got to the BBQ and when no one was looking I put it on the grill! After a minute or two, people were checking their meat and we were hearing: "Ewwww! What is that!?!?" Some were laughing...some girls were disgusted. We just kept silent. In the end, it was the only one left. A Tongan couple asked me if it was mine. I said: "It's ALL YOURS! I've heard some people love it. They slice it for sandwiches. We had so much fun at all the activities. When I became a CFI later, I took about twelve church scouts for two laps around our uncontrolled field and gave them each a logbook sheet indicating they had had an actual flying lesson that day. So much fun to see such happy kids. So glad for the Patey families to be ambassadors of aviation!
