Magatte Wade has made comments that many, especially academics, are incendiary, which is that colonialism is NOT why Africa is poor. Why does she think that?

I'm in South Africa and have worked extensively in our rural communities. Our problems are many. Number one is extremely poor education. We have one of the lowest standards of education in the world. Number 2 is lack of skills. Our people have lost their traditional skills, and no skills of any sort are taught in school. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the world. Most of the school leavers in my community can't get a job and sit at home doing mothing. They can't start their own business because they have no skills or education. 'My people perish for lack of knowledge'.😢

The difference is without the income from private businesses prospering there will be no education and no need for skills. Her model solves the preconditions for education, skills, and jobs. If you make a place economically tempting businesses move in, provide jobs, provide education, and provide skills to learn for the new jobs. Most Americans were illiterate about 100yrs ago and rural. The wealth generates everything else and even converts the rural to the urban and interconnected. Even small farming towns in the USA have infrastructure now

What an intelligent, well informed, accomplished and passionate woman. Fascinating how she attributes her attitude to her Sufi upbringing. Love "criticize by creating"! She has a very fine business mind. She challenges the corrupt bureaucracy in Senegal for the reason young people can't get ahead. That has absolutely nothing with "colonialism." It's everyone getting their payoff along the way and a vested interest in bureaucratic privilege. Lesson: over regulation of business squelches it. Lesson: oppressive taxes on businesses prevents them from growing and thriving - and by the way, employing people and providing goods that people want and that raise their standard of living; it's demoralizing. I LOVE that she takes no prisoners with "lazy thinking." Generally, people who are upset with independent critical thinking based on research, data and experience are just pissed that you don't go along with their worldview or ideology and are never willing to do their own homework. That would take work, God forbid.

She has identified part of the problem, the question is, how did Africa countries decide to create all those regulations? It goes much further than government ineptness or bureaucratic stupidity, it finally comes down to culture. Why do the African people continue to live under these governments? What was the difference between American resistance to regulation vs African resistance? What makes a people crave liberty to the point they will die to preserve it? Culture, and the American culture was founded upon a Christian understanding of sovereignty and liberty, the rest of the work, not so much.

When I was in college as a 40-year-old student 30 years ago, I did a paper on "what makes America great." Of course, from the professors I discussed this with, their answers were our natural resources and the resources we took from other countries. I, however, was aware of countries such as Nigeria that had incredible resources -- gold, oil, uranium -- as well as twelve month growing seasons, depending on the crop and where most of the people were living in poverty. I was also aware of this port -- a great port, I'll admit -- but no land to speak of that was wealthy beyond all their neighbors. I am referring to the natural resource shy city of Hong Kong. I knew Ethiopia had a rich history of interactions with the Middle East and Europe and had never been colonized but was just as poor as its neighbors. So, I was keen to dive into the subject. My conclusion of why we are such a wealthy nation was our form of government. Government was also the reason for so much poverty in the world. I was not surprised at Magatte's conclusion one little bit. This problem of government is also why Central and South America has been so poor. Once a person in these countries gets a cush government job (most likely because of their relationship of the country's leader) they then proceed to pass as much wealth on to family and friends. Bribing becomes a necessary step in any process. It is sad beyond sad to see this all over the world.

Then their governments will take a lot of their earnings at the point of a gun? It doesn't seem to matter what kind of aid we send, it just gets absorbed by corruption. It's a shortterm solution to a longterm problem. Also, they can't rely on external customers for all their products, if they aren't generating wealth locally. However, dressing it up as charity goods, but the poor Africans actually work for their handouts, will help to pull in people who wouldn't just straight up donate to people whom they see as lazy and corrupt. I know I'm not a charitable person, because I've seen too much corruption in charity organisations in person, and how handouts of any kind become a crutch and disincentivise personal autonomy, especially endless foreign aid.

I was over 40 yrs in South Africa and here I spent years seeing exactly the same problems you see. Again I see a new city starting out with a charity who builds from the ground up. Firstly home build kits come from England that are strong, with fire resistant, modern and resilient. Once this is achieved the owners can sell the concept and know how to other entrepreneurs in other areas. I’d start with poorest members of society with children and build the homes in a circle. For safety from cars and neighbourly events etc. Then the people would firstly be educated on how the home works, how to maintain it and also be educated on different jobs needed around the area. E.g. a nursery nurse, to look after the children in the circle. Once they were fully educated on these things they would be rented to the people at costs each can afford. This would then grow with a supermarket with the residents working there and a school that teaches the children all different skills and the adults as well. There would of course be a district for businesses and manufacturing where the people would work. As it is a charity it would start small and grow with lots of education as they go.
@heatherwebber9747
@heatherwebber9747 19 дней назад
Why the education in a home you may ask. Well Mary was given a small house to rent and then the toilet mechanism broke and they just left it. The water just ran in the toilet constantly and Mary could not understand why her water bill was going into the thousands. So I went to her house and found the problem and switched off her water until she could get the necessary fixture etc. so now Mary was poorer than before with massive debt.

have you noticed, though, that Education kind of sucks these days? People come out of school unable to make a living beyond flipping burgers in the USA, for example. colleges have to offer remedial courses because they have so many high school graduates who aren't even competent to do college level work. They are further incapacitated with leftist programming inside the education system, they are trained to look to the government to save them and to regulate the daylights out of everybody. They've gotten to the point of regulating peoples language. Even if it defies biology. That goes for both the trans phenomenon and the Covid debacle. If we don't have freedom in the education system, we are doomed also.

Only about 12% of Africa's total coastline is usable for large ships. And almost all the rivers are seasonal so half the year the riverbed are dry. So it's hard to get supplies to Africa and extremely hard to get supplies to the interior of Africa.

One thing Africa needs is Sea Ports. The Atlantic Coast is a shallow draft for miles out to sea with no harbors, which prevents large container ships from offloading. I think there is something like 4 or 6 deep-sea ports in all of sub-Sahara Africa, and half of them are seasonal?
@truxton1000
@truxton1000 Месяц назад
Yes they need sea ports, that too. What about someone giving you 100 billion dollars to someone like you to build some sea ports in Africa? I bet you the ports would maybe be built somehow, but most of the money will go to pay off corrupt politicians, other "important" people, your family members (if your are African) that will constantly be on your back pestering you for more money more money more money, plus workers black mailing you for higher salaries, despite they hardly doing anything etc etc it will just go on and on and on and in the end the ports will not really make ANY kind of profit for the investors but just a big black money pit.

China and Saudi Arabia will de facto “own” most African countries soon and they will impose order from the top down. Africa should be a productivity powerhouse! But tribal mindsets hold them back. This is why corruption flourishes there and nothing gets done. Giving them money for aid is just a joke. They are dependent and nothing changes.

80,000 years of inhabiting a continent and not a monument to their culture. It never was "colonialism" a communist made up term but exploration as Livingston wrote and did as many European folk who traveled to Africa for science as they did to other parts, for survival in case of Boers, etc. They have been sitting on mineral riches for thousands of years without a clue what to do with it or to even know it's there untill Eueopans figured it out. Never mind the fact we still feed the whole continent and send billions in foreign aid all in vain. Look at Rhodesia and what happened there, Congo once Belgium said ok you want us gonne bye, 30 plus years of civil war,cannibalism same with Liberia that we set for freed slaves we freed from their own people and merchants of Sin that don't even belong to our people, Liberia has been nothing but failed state evwr since. Chicago etc... What's the common denominator and will they ever accept responsibility for their lack of ingenuity,and not to depend on anyone else. Europeans should have stayed out of that place forever.

Communism is a Jewish ideology. Jews imported blacks for cheap textile labor. Why don’t blacks direct their ire to their actual historical oppressors?

There are simply groups of people without the ability to form prosperous high functioning societies in our modern world. Africa has an abundance of these groups.

The question that’s good to ask is ; why does this kind of standard and multiple choices exist here and not there. Takes the they vs we out if it. Humans generally strive for the same things in life. Safe country, a home, a family, good education and many opportunities to contribute to your society. So what hinders that in different parts of the world?
