Peter Lawford might not be the best-known member of the Rat Pack, but he certainly was an important member of the elite group. He is sometimes referred to as the "Man Who Kept The Secrets" due to his secretive efforts to connect Marilyn Monroe and his brother-in-law JFK. Throughout Monroe and Kennedy's alleged affair, Lawford supposedly acted as a liaison for the President. Some theorists even suggest that Lawford was somehow involved in Monroe's death. While that might sound a bit conspiratorial, it is known that Lawford had quite a few Mafia buddies who wanted nothing more than to see the blonde bombshell put into a shallow grave.
You probably remember Peter Lawford as a handsome and charismatic film star. But besides Ocean 11, can you think of a single film that he appeared in? After joining the Rat Pack, Lawford's movie career pretty much stalled. Even so, he did appear in quite a few decent films including Little Women, Exodus, It Should Happen To You, and Advise and Consent. Because of his Kennedy ties, Lawford also enjoyed quite a bit of political pull. After JFK's assassination, however, all of that would dissipate rapidly.
Lawford pretty much exclusively worked as a supporting actor and never really got a chance to be a lead in any of these films. That's not to say that he wasn't a noteworthy actor, but if he hadn't been a member of the Rat Pack or had those connections to JFK, he likely would be all but forgotten today. And really, hasn't he anyway? It's not as if the name Peter Lawford is something that you hear every day. Join FactsVerse as we discuss the real reason why Peter Lawford got himself kicked out of the Rat Pack.

My dad worked as a nurse in the hospital where Peter Lawford was a patient in the late 70s. He told me how he was assigned to him and how Peter Lawford was there because he destroyed himself with alcohol and how Peter Lawford looked like a zombie. He said how Liz Taylor came to visit him and when she found out he didn't have a private room because he couldn't afford it, she arranged for him to have a private room.

He ended up giving millions to charities, mostly those that helped minorities and organizations that fought against racism. He often would get several of the top performers to take a week or more out of their schedule to do a performance for charities for no pay. It is a know fact that he had incredible respect for women. There are many interviews with female personalities were this side of him was discussed. If you were his friend, he was totally loyal. Color of skin was never an issue for him. His accomplishments were incredibly huge, personally and professionally. No one in the entertainment industry did more for the average person than Frank. His music, interpretation of the lyrics, his voice, were one of a kind. Countless concerts, all over the world, some he did for no money, benefited millions. He was very successful making movies. Peter Lawford made a huge mistake. He allowed the Kennedy's to use him as their messenger to Sinatra. Lawford was the one who told Sinatra that JFK would not be staying with him and instead would be staying with Crosby. He should have told the Kennedys' "you tell Sinatra". Sinatra had helped Kennedy, raised money for Kennedy had a concert with Hollywood stars for him. He wasn't a problem - as long they needed him. Some years ago I read a book about history of the Irish in America. There was a whole section in there on their contributions to entertainment industry. The Rat Pack was originally an all Irish drinking club in 1930's. Made up of Irish or Irish-American celebrities. They were Spencer Tracy, Tyrone Powers, Pat O'Brien and James Cagney. Not exactly sure why but over time members dropped out due to poor health or disinterest. So James Cagney invited Humphrey Bogart. Bogart was the first non Irish member to the group. Bogart maintain the association long after it's founding member left the group. Bogart invited in many non-irish celebrities to the group. Number one being Frank Sinatra. Bogart left the group sometime in the 1950's due to failing health and left the leadership to Frank Sinatra. Frank Sinatra in turn changed the group into a Las Vegas night club act and the rest they say is history.

As I have heard, Lawford approached Sinatra about a script that he had acquired, about a group of former soldiers who staged the robbery of several Las Vegas casinos. It was the perfect project for Sinatra, who, by that time, was a well known fixture in LV and even owning a 9% share of the Sands. As a reward for bringing forward the script, Sinatra gave Lawford a staring role and a percentage of the film's profits, even allowing Lawford to participate in the Lounge act, while the movie was being filmed. Sammy Davis worked up a routine or two that they could perform together.Joey Bishop attained his spot, afterappearing last, at a large testimonial dinner for Sinatra. His jokes brought the house down and Sinatra saw a lot of talent in him. Joey fit perfectly in the role of MC for the night club act, but since Joey didn;t drink, it kept him out of Frank's more personal life.

I highly recommend a book on Lawford by James Spada called Peter Lawford THE MAN WHO KEPT THE SECRETS. Excellent biography on that cat. I think that Sammy Davis Jr was the most talented of the pack. He was a musician, singer, dancer, actor, comedian, and impersonator. None of the other cats were as versatile. He gave those cats so much more personality and style as well. Frank Sinatra was my favorite though. He had the swagger, power and bravado that the others didn't have. I also really dug that gangster/street persnoa. There are cats today that are still trying emulate what Sinatra was doing. Not to also mention, he was an awesome vocalist as well. It's not surprising that we can't fairly judge Peter Lawford on any scale of quality or character; we are limited in what we know about any stranger. What IS surprising is when we judge others, being far too little(or too great) in criticism. Sitting at home, we don't know how sports and movie celebrities, or politicians, act in private. Do any of them have secret bank accounts? Second families? Odd habits? We don't know, which in a way is good (privacy) but certainly invalidates any value judgement people make.

It's nonsense to say that the most influential member was not Sinatra. No one else achieved the level of accomplishments, positive notoriety, and fame that he did. I love Dino but he was just a happy go lucky guy, wonderful voice, and a pretty good actor. Frank was a one of a kind when it came to singing. None of the pact even came close to being able to deliver a song's meaning like him. there have been over 30 major books written about Sinatra, and even Dino can't compare to that.
