Many EV's purchased with incentives in Germany were exported after the required 6 months to neighbor countries and the first owners made a profit and a business out of the practice. In effect Getmany subsidised EVs for its neighbours as well and the government wouldn't stand for that in the long run. So they killed the incentives. Any new incentive plan must not have the export loophole.

This video completely ignores the fact that many used car dealers in Germany are refusing to purchase EVs. Many authorised dealerships will no no longer accept EVs as a trade-in. What many do not understand about Germany is that a relatively affluent minority that own a house have by now purchased an EV. That leaves the rest of households living in rented apartments for whom EVs are not àn option. This is not rocket surgery.

EV market down in Germany by 14.1%, Tesla 36.7%. And VW Group outsold Tesla in BEV category in Germany in 2024 Q1, even with some of its brands (e.g. CUPRA) are missing from the list from that source. So VW -30%+ is only for the brand and all models (also ICE), while for example Skoda increased sales by over 40% in Germany. VW (Group) in Q1: Total deliveries up from 2.04 M to 2.10 M Europe -0.3%, BEVs -24% US: -2%, BEVs: -16% China:+8%, BEVs: +91%

Could it be German reliability? My (still under warranty) 2019 GTI just got ANOTHER recall notice regarding a part that is not yet available to install. TPMS, ABS module AND just yesterday… I got another notice, and it’s for a component in the Fuel tank. “Fire risk” stood out. I haven’t had app-connectivity since 2021 because they STILL don’t have the 4G module for my telematics… (I repeat - Still under warranty) The new Mk8 GTI has a completely plastic interior, an electronic parking brake, and seems to be priced too high for something that feels like a used Ford Focus…

Ev new car sales are down because 1, subsides are reduced or gone, 2nd hand ev market cars are 40% + off so why buy new, 3, new buyers are waiting for better battery miles and charging speeds and charging infrastructure to get better,4 High interest rates and recession on in many countries so why buy a luxury item you don’t have to buy.5 Some insurance companies don’t like pure ev’s like Tesla and charge a much higher premium or refuse to insure. With better batteries I think the car category likely to have the best sales are hybrids. Unfortunately for Tesla and other pure BEV’s zero sales here.

They stopped all incentives in the netherlands for cars with a catalogus price over 45000 euro. Already years ago. Still a lot of people buy those more expensive EV's. (I must add to this that the tax on buying a car depends on the CO2 production (using wltp usage) at the exhaust pipe. In other words...Zero CO2 means zero tax...result of this is that especially with the more luxe brands an EV even without direct incentivs does not cost a lot more than an ICE... But due to high energy taxes (also on electricity) makes that the savings on energy with an ev can be high. Up to 10 eurocent for each km. Only this makes energy costs when driving 25000 km a year 2500 lower.However, electricity from solar panels own by someone are not taxed at all...adding a few more cents /km savings if you can charge at home and own enough panels.

You are overlooking the political aspect. Germany has a green ideological government "Ampel" coalition with at this point in time less than 30% support left. That government closed 6 nuclear plants and had to rely on even more coal fired plants. Bundesnetzagentur has prohibited closing down these coal plant in order to prevent the collapse of the electric grid. Some cities were forced to impose limits on installing head pumps and charging stations because the electric power simply is not available. The extremely high electricity prices have caused well known German firms to close down or to leave Germany. Germany's economy is suffering a recession. The marxist green ideologues are quite happy to e-industrialize Germany. By the way the Berlin plant was also shut down for 2 weeks because the Suez channel became blocked forcing the shipping supply to go around Africa. That implieda lck of spare parts, but also China produced Tesla's had many more cars held up in the logistic path for the same reason.

Bad research here. Domestic solar power in Germany is relatively insignificant, if you had ever visited you would know why. Wind is by far and away the country's largest source of renewable energy (4-5 times as much wind as solar). Solar counts for only a little more than burning wood chips (something Germany counts as renewable but most people consider a bad idea). The country also relies on nuclear power imported from France and Sweden to balance its network. Some solar power though does make its way to Germany from as far afield as Spain.

Sam, here in the UK the reason why many people are no longer buying EVs is because people simply don’t trust their governments. With an electric car they fear that they can just be shutdown or control where and when you can drive. People don’t want anything that can be accessed over the air and assume petrol/diesel cars offer them the freedom to go anywhere at anytime. They haven’t really considered the fact that modern cars are just as susceptible to over the air control, Road sign recognition and automatic vehicle control are already in all new cars as a requirement to meet EU legislation.

Month to month fluctuations are nothing new. The long term trend is up. Negatives, disruptions, vandalism, winter performance issues, incentives removed. All will be resolved long term. It's not worth being overly concerned about. It will ultimately still be cheaper to operate an EV than an ICE vehicle. That's all one needs to know. Long term it's an EV future, not an ICE one. Near term more hybrids for sure, but long term it's EV. Hydrogen ( the also ran ) wont even get a look in.

All subsidies and tax incentives should be removed from EV’S. In addition all subsidies and tax breaks should be removed from the petroleum industry and taxes should be implemented to capture the health costs caused by the particulates in tailpipe emissions and the refining process that is leading to many premature deaths. The grid and renewable energy should be subsidized which will drive the cost of electricity down. At that point let the consumer decide which vehicle is best.

The German car industry can only slow down the switch to electric cars to a degree, but they risk losing competitiveness with the car companies that are going all in on electric cars. It's going to happen regardless of what the German car industry or government wants, so it makes more sense to push hard on being competitive in the EV industry, otherwise, they are going to end up in a situation where they lose market share around the world and in Europe as consumers end up buying more EV's from rival carmakers, a lot of which probably don't care if it's a German car or not, just as long as the quality is good and the price is right, China with BYD sees that, hence why they are being aggressive on reducing pricing. History has shown that anytime an old industry tries to slow or stop a new better industry from taking off, the old industry usually always losses, either by massively being downsized or even going bankrupt, I suspect some could go bankrupt, but many will likely be downsized if they don't wake up to the new reality that newer companies are going all in on EV cars and will end up taking over the car industry if the old industry doesn't wake up and adapt, either way, it's happening regardless of what the old industry wants, so it makes more sense to adapt, get onboard and compete in the EV market. Also, this all sounds like month-to-month fluctuations that's happening in Germany and I think overall, EV sales are on the increase, probably better to look on a yearly basis.

I work on electric cars and have been for the past 6 years. They are great if it's a lease and you have a stage 2 charger in your garage. However you never want to be on the hook when the battery goes out. The money you will be saving you will put into tires and a new battery at the end of ownership. Right now a car payment on a high end electric car is 1300 plus interstate so let's say you pay 1500 a month after interest vs a car if the same size for 800 or 900 but you will pay for oil changes, fluid flushed and the occasional mechanical repair every few years. The amount you save is astronomical over the long term. Imagine you are the second owner and just paid off your electric car you are out of warranty and your battery decides to go out rendering the car a big paperweight. You call your dealership and have your car looked it and they quote you$30,000 to $50,000 depending on the manufacturer for a new old stock battery that's been sitting on the shelf for 7years. You ask the dealership how much it will cost to trade in the car and they said as it sits $1,500 towards a new car, this price is what copart will pay to haul off the car to the auction block. The dealership does not want that car on their lot. This will be the future, true throw away cars. None of the electronics can be recycled because the electronics even headlights are Vin seared and cannot be reused. I will continue to drive my gas car until the wheels fall off. Then I'll buy another one.
@PawelMrozik

You can get a new battery into a 10 year old Leaf for €5-10k, depending on battery size. You can get an EV here for under €200 per month. If you can charge at home and plan on buying a new car anyway, an EV is a no brainer unless you're doing long distance driving all the time. It costs me €1.20 to drive 100km with home charging. It used to cost me €11. In addition, the electricity here is produced locally. It's about 35% renewable, and increasing every year. Why would I want to pay for the import and refinement of oil? I also don't want to deal with timing belts, clutches, spark plugs, oil changes, radiator leaks, EGR valves and all the other stuff. Not polluting the local air in our city is another benefit. Petrol isn't too bad, but the smoke some diesels spew is bad. Just to let you know, I speak from experience of owning both types of cars, with ICE for most of my life. They're more fun around a race track and I like the sound of a V8 or 2 litre turbo, but I can have one as a hobby car. EVs are simply better for everyday use, no question.
