Game 1 - Best player: Brown and Porzingis (Porzingis played injured, and I know he didn't even play the whole game but he scored 20 points in only 1 quarter.) Game 2: Brown and Holiday. Game 3: Brown. Game 4: Tatum (Whole team was trash that game I know) Game 5: Tatum. The real MVP: Celtics management for building a well rounded team where any of the starting 5 can dominate on any given day.

giving a lot of questionable 'co-MVP' games to Brown there Game 1: KP, 2: Jrue, 3: Brown, 4: Luka, 5: Tatum. I mean tbh they could've given the MVP to Luka, Jerry West style. He was the best player in the series.

@@BostonianLife game 3 best player was Tatum. In the 1st half when Mavs were going bonkers, and Celtics just sucking, Tatum kept the Celtics alive in that crucial run. Tatum had much more important job than Brown in the series: eliminate lob threat and Mavs bigs control + rebounding, which legit is more important & harder than Brown guarding Luka. Jaylen Brown won because he was the most consistent and most efficient. He was the clutch guy in crucial moments. You could argue in part that besides Brown's own raw talent, he was able to score more efficiently because of Tatum's playmaking skills, in which he was able to read the defense well, draw the defenders away, making the correct plays which left Brown open for clearer/open shots. Defensively, they were both good, but Brown went the extra mile in being able to actually guard Luka and forcing many turnovers. Tatum still dominated the stats, despite taking the playmaker role and allowing his team mates to shine. He still played his role and was an integral part to the team's success. Anyone claiming Tatum was bad is just hating. In saying this, I think Brown deserved it, but if Tatum had won it instead, I'd be completely okay with it. Love both Jays.

Tatum is the best player on the team. He's been in contention for MVP for the last 3 seasons with 5 consecutive all-star appearances. While Tatum did "choke" he led the team in points, rebounds, and assists. That being said Celtics proved that the model of any championship team is having a good team, not just a duo or big three. BUT That being said - The FMVP deservedly went to Brown but it could have gone to others like Jrue or Porzingis (if he didn't get injured) But more so than that Brown was the first key piece in Boston that along with Horford that has been here the longest and created the culture for this team to win. Brown showed leadership for the Celtics and defended the best player on the Mavericks team (Luka Doncic). The Celtics as a team are exceptional so who gets the awards doesn't take away from the team's amazing success or how good Tatum is.

This Boston championship draws a lot of comparisons to the 2015 warriors were the best player (Steph) doesn’t get the fmvp and the narrative that another guy (Iggy) played better defense on the star player (Lebron) was the reason for winning. Now like Steph all those years Tatum gonna get scrutinized for not winning fmvp tho he truly deserved it. The difference is Brown is an all nba caliber player still and iggy was on the decline.

Focusing on one part of defense (guarding Luka) and disregarding the rest (guarding everyone else) is not really a good analytical approach and you're just cherry picking data points. Watch all 5 games start to finish then tell me who was better in defense and offense. Stats do not tell the whole picture either. And I'm saying this as a Mavs fan. Tatum never felt like a threat. Brown was always dangerous.

He is a great player, a good role model for the youngsters, a great teammate and never had an off the court controversy like Ja Morant. Then why the obsession with seeing Tatum fail? Tatum assisted on 33% of Brown's assisted field goals this finals, the highest percentage of any duo ever. Tatum was a willing passer and facilitator, he ran the offense and took on the less 'sexy' assignment of guarding the Mavs centres and taking away the lob threat that killed every other team. It was clear how the defense was set up to neutralize Tatum and he took it in stride, the dude played exceptional unselfish basketball. Any real hooper with some IQ would see that he didn't have the big moments, but the only reason they were close enough to be in the big moments was because of his play up to that point.

In the clip of Brown talking that you posted, he stated that his goal was to deny Luka the ball. You can't just look at Luka's shot attempts as a measure of Brown's defense. A large part of what Brown did well was denying Luka the ball and putting enough pressure on him at half court to make him pass to a teammate who then took a bad shot. I think your analysis of his defense is too narrow in scope. Additionally, Brown was more consistent than Tatum and had memorable shots to help close out games and secure wins. Not saying that Tatum didn't also deserve consideration for MVP, but chalking it up to just the voters being dumb is very poor analysis imo.

Youre missing some really important context here that diesnt show up in the box scores. Luka did almost all of his damage in the first half, and was pretty awful in the second half. It wasnt because Brown was racking up plays with counting stats; it was because he took him on all the way up the floor over and over, wore him out, and he didnt have legs to close games. No one can guard Luka and stop him. But Jaylen outworked him and wore him out. Then Jaylen hit late game-closing shots and was very effective late in games whej Luka disappeared. Jaylens physicality set the tone for Boston on both ends of the floor, and the timeliness of his baskets was a huge factor. Jaylen deserved the MVP.

I'm not saying Brown didn't deserve the award. But I hate the narrative that Brown is and has been consistently better than Tatum, especially in big games. Tatum was much better in 2023 and 2022 postseasons (except the Finals series) and even this series Brown had 3 good games and 2 bad games (had more points in game 4 but wasn't the better player). I would actually say Tatum was the more consistent player, tho JB had higher highs, but also lower lows. His defense was good but so was Tatums and I'm not talking about just defending Doncic, but eliminating Mavs short roll option.

I don't think I've heard a single person say it should be Tatum. No, Brown didn't win just because defense but because he always showed up. These are the type of comments I see everywhere. I truly don’t think we watch games the same way. Somehow people that agree with you see Brown playing well in “high pressure” moments and then make statements like “he showed up when it matters” so my question is does the rest of the game not matter? Does the fact that when Tatum would be on the bench the Mavericks would go on runs to make it a close game not matter? Tatum is the reason Brown could even be in those moments. Tatum was the offense and brown did his job by capping it off. Tatum didn’t have an efficient shooting finals but damn he was phenomenal in every other category.

Brown won because he did more than he was expected to, and Tatum did less. Anyone watching the Celtics from the time these two played together knows that Tatum has the more polished game. Still, Tatum, as gifted as he is, gives even his most ardent fans headaches because he isn't making the most of his talents. I even posit that Brown is the emotional leader of the team, while Tatum performs better when he doesn't take the brunt of leadership. I'm not upset that Brown won, as a fan, because he didn't shrink from the pressure, although I think Tatum should have won because of things he did that actually didn't show up in the stat sheet. That includes taking away the lob threat and keeping the offense running. This isn't as bad as Iguodala winning Finals MVP.

brown perform for 1-3 and tatum game 4-5. brown is straight out hunting luka on both ends to make sure luka is dread tired. and you haven't factor in that there are many moments where luka tried to create shot but end up passing because he was going nowhere, became tired( playing offense only), passive against the more physical brown. people really didn't watch the finals to know that luka is hunting tatum out on defense, and to our surprise tatum is doing so badly defensively against luka. so yeah brown is fmvp. btw did people really forget tatum tried to statspadd in 4th quarter in pacers and mavs series against benchwarmers to padd his stats? lmao

JT had better +/- than JB in every game but game 4. Not slightly better, Tatum had +19 and Brown had +3. That means Tatum elevated Celtics game, just as Jrue did, who was the best player for first two games but not at the 3rd one even tho he was Cs best scorer (same with Tatum that had worse +/- when he scores more instead of facilitating). What Brown did well, he exhausted Luka, by guarding him full court. Still don't think that was the only thing that tired Luka, hunting him was the crucial factor.

Why is the nba not voting for mvp? Why is it some random fat guy behind a computer screen who doesn’t even hoop? If someone wins 4-1 and their best player has the best stats. He clearly contributed the most to the win by scoring playmaking and rebounding. No way Tatum isn’t mvp

Tatum was clearly the best player of his team just at the final Finals game. He was also shooting with 39%. So he was not good offensively. There was only one player that was great at both offense and defense and is called Jrue Holiday. He played amazing defense, he had the less usage%, but his was amazing at TS% and eFG%.

People said exactly this when Kobe was Tatum's age and Shaq was winning the Laker's FMVP's. But now most everyone would say that Kobe is better than Shaq... Tatum has many more years to prove he is special. Just cause you start out imitating doesn't mean that's where it will end. Tatum will grow out of Kobe's shadow, just as Kobe did Jordan's. This is coming from a Jaylen Brown stan.

Look at fg%, 3p%. Tatum basically had 2 good games out of 5 where he scored a lot (on mediocre efficiency) which bumps up his average for the series. Jaylen Brown had 4 good games out of 5 and spent a lot of time guarding the most offensively productive player in the league. Honestly I don't think either of them was clearly better than the other, and I think Jrue Holiday also had some really good games (he had a terrible game in game 4, but so did the whole team more or less), and Porzingis in game 1 was crazy good and pretty good in game 2 as well. Ultimately the Celtics had a lot of very good players but no single player who was far and away the best. Tough to decide who to give the award in a case like that. I also wonder if Jaylen Brown not making an All-NBA team while Tatum was First Team influenced who they gave the award to. Ultimately it seems fair to me, I don't think Tatum was robbed. I don't think Brown was obviously better or anything but I think he deserved it.

The point here is NOT Brown just guarded Luka, but he scored efficiently & relentlessly attacking & doing many things very consistently. Then again, it's a team win where Tatum & the other 6 guys were crucial not to mention Mazzulla's preparations throughout the year and dissection of their opponents. Since MVP is for just 1 person, Brown very slightly edges over Tatum, Holiday, White

Brown’s performance in the clutch in Game 2 and especially in Game 3 did it for me. If JB doesn’t hit that contested midrange with a minute left, the Celtics likely blow a 21 point 4Q lead and the series is 2-1, then 2-2 after the shellacking in Game 4. The series may have gone 7 if not for JB in the clutch.

I think it's because the NBA feels like they owe Brown. He's only made 1 All-NBA team, & 3 All-Star teams (2 of those were reserve selections due to injuries, if im not mistakin'). Other than that, he does have many accolades or awards. The ring & Finals MVP levels out his resume a bit more. Tatum is younger & has plenty of time to win both of the MVP trophies.

I'm a fan of JB but if all the stats you saying is true then there could only be one explanation, what you found is analysts given birth too a seed to later evolve into a fallout of the duo , I hope JT nd JB don't bite into the idea and that mazzula can keep them together, Boston analytics needs to make them aware of the seed that's been planted
