The REAL Reason Younger People Are Dying of Colon Cancer

Nobody knows for sure why colon cancer numbers are rising in young people. Sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol use, low-fiber, high-fat diets or diets high in processed meats, and other environmental factors have all been associated with the disease.

Great video! I am 52, I had a colonoscopy as a preventative measure ordered by my primary. They removed a precancerous polyp. I can not stress enough how bad people make the procedure seem when it is truly not that bad. If your primary is suggesting you to get a colonoscopy, do it! What worries me, Dr. Hansen, is that no one seems to want to talk about health anymore. On sports radio, of all places, they were talking about this. Growing up in the 80's-90's we got nutrition hammered into our little skulls, some of it dubious (food pyramid), but at least we were told to move and not to eat junk food. The radio hosts were saying they ask their kids about nutrition and good health, and they have no clue, no interest. They aren't hearing it at school. They don't see it on TV, or hear it on the radio (OK, I'm showing my age). It really worries me. My father grew up in the 60's and ate a typical 60's meat and potatoes diet, probably without a lot of processed food. Now he has diabetes. I grew up in the 80's with fruit loops and TV dinners, which we usually didn't get because we couldn't afford them - but I'm trying to improve my health because I'm pre-diabetic. My kids eat absolutely terrible diets because they have junk shoved on them from everywhere - usually for free. Where will they be in 20-30 years?

During most of my adulthood, I consumed the major food groups for adults: alcohol, sweet and low (saccharine), white flour, Crisco oil, broccoli with tons of cheese and margarine. Many of us stopped smoking about 20 years ago and no longer do drugs, not much anyway. We're all deaf from too much loud rock and fat from the 3 bags of Doritos we ate after toking. You say high fructose corn syrup is worst, because it's a 50:50 ratio of glucose and fructose. Which doesn't make sense because: 1) ordinary sucrose is also a fixed 50:50 ratio, therefore should be as bad 2) actually the ratio in HIGH FRUCTOSE corn syrup is skewed towards fructose, which is more detrimental to the body, and that's why HFCS is considered worse (as far as I understand it)
@mgx9383
@mgx9383 Год назад
Actually I was wrong about fructose content in HFCS. The most commonly used variants are 55 (percentage of fructose) and 42. So confusingly HFCS can have less fructose than glucose. All in all it isn't a significant difference from sucrose, so I don't get why HFCS gets singled out as exceptionally bad. (while agreeing that both are bad)
@mouffetteintrepide8445

I should point out a mistake here. Smoking point in oils is not the same as the point of break down. Just because you see smoke it doesn’t mean that the oil is being hydrogenated or oxidized or becoming carcinogenic. Olive oil has a lower smoking point than other oils but it’s one of the most stable ones. It also has antioxidants. The only oils that cause cancer are the ones that are used and reused like in restaurants. To know more see Adam Ragusea video on this.
@Shiveone
@Shiveone Год назад
I had to question that as well. I’ve been frying in Extra Virgin Olive Oil for years and it seems like if any Trans Fat Carcinogens come about due to the high temperature like you said the antioxidants in the Olive Oil should offset any harmful effects. I think there is still more extensive research that needs to be done on Olive Oil and cooking with it.

Great video but just a word about processed meats which have been laughingly described as a class 1 carcinogen. Just to give you an idea, the chance of any adult contracting colon cancer has been calculated to be 4.3 per cent. Someone eating a lot of processed meats has a 16 per cent higher chance of colon cancer. 16 per cent of 4.3 is 0.688%. Therefore if you stuff yourself with bacon sandwiches on a daily basis for your whole life your chance of getting colon cancer rises by way less than 1 per cent. Compare this with smoking tobacco where the mortality rate is something like 50 per cent of those who smoke.
@carl13579
@carl13579 Год назад
The 16% is an average. The data shows that the effects are dose dependent. If you eat excessive amounts of processed meats, your extra risk will be a lot higher than 16%. Also, eating unhealthily affects more than just colon cancer. It lowers life expectancy through many pathways.
@simonround2439

Consider me an N=1 experiment. I would argue it’s much simpler. I have a family history of colon cancer. I’ve been getting a regular colonoscopy since I was 45 years old. In 2010, at age 57, the first polyp appeared. Two in 2013, three in 2016, four in 2019. I also had IBS, gastric reflux and diverticulitis. Early in 2019, I decided to go on a low carb/ketogenic diet. Very strict at first, less strict later. Probably average around 50g/day of carbs, but strictly limit sugar and refined carbs. I eat lots of red meat, bacon, cured meats and cheese. I’ve almost eliminated fiber from my diet. I intermittent fast regularly. No trans fats or vegetable oils. IBS and gastric reflux disappeared in two weeks. In the first six months, I went from almost 260 lbs to now holding 190-200. I feel better and have more energy at 70 than at 60. Blood work much better. Triglycerides from 100+ to 45. Total cholesterol from 220s to 180-190. Because of pandemic, most recent colonoscopy was delayed to four years instead of three. Result….ZERO polyps, much reduced diverticulitis. BMs much easier than before. Nitrates, nitrites, fiber are red herrings. It’s all about sugar, seed oils, and refined carbs. Eat less often and don’t live on carbs. There are essential fats and amino acids, but no essential carbs. Your body can make all the glucose it needs. Exercise won’t help unless you train your body to use fat for fuel. Listen to/read Jason Fung. He explains this better than anyone.

Dr. Hansen: It's absurd to say that "high-fructose corn syrup" is the worst kind of sugar. HFCS is a misnomer, just as it would be a misnomer to say that cane (or beet) sugar is high fructose. Upon consumption, cane and beet sugars (sucrose) are immediately converted to glucose + fructose. Exactly the same as HFCS. There is no essential difference between sucrose and HFCS. In fact HFCS may be preferable to sucrose since it provides more sweetening power per calorie than sucrose.

I have been thinking about this and wondering if I would later down the line be susceptible to colon cancer, and I am not sure if my family has a history of it; and funnily enough as I've been thinking about this, new videos on this topic show up 🤔 *I have one question, is pure palm sugar (such as those from SEAn countries) beneficial compared to white refined processed sugar we have here in the west? Is there any benefits or adverse side effects compared to white sugar and high fructose C.S. in high amounts? Look forward to seeing your response!* *Palm sugar processing uses the natural palm tree and/or coconut sap and is boiled and reduced to make the end product, most do not add anything to it other than water to dilute the end product. Most are of yellow and brown color here in the west.*

From all I have read, sugar is sugar, no matter the source. However, if you need to add sweetness to a food, monk fruit, erythritol or stevia may be good options since they will not cause a rise in insulin. But use these in moderation as the sensation of sweetness on the tongue has the potential to stimulate insulin production.

It should have been mentioned that many plants like rucola, spinach, and salad contain high amounts of nitrate.
@Lulu-kt6gr
@Lulu-kt6gr Год назад
It’s not the same type of nitrate as is produced by charring meat. The nitrates in green vegetables increase nitric oxide levels in the blood and help circulation which accounts for the cardio protective effects of a vegetarian diet. Plants also have antioxidants which prevent DNA damage.
@RalfStephan
@RalfStephan Год назад
@@Lulu-kt6gr Nitrate is nitrate. There is no evidence of a "different nitrate". The problem with charring meat is not nitrate but, as the video says, creation of PAH (polyaromatic hydrocarbons). Which happens with any combustion of organic material, e.g. tobacco smoking.
@Lulu-kt6gr
@Lulu-kt6gr Год назад
@@RalfStephan the nitrate in plants is beneficial for the body because of the antioxidants and the nitric oxide. And yes, as you say, it is not the nitrate per se that makes it dangerous in any case: it is the burning that causes the toxicity, and you get a little bit of that when you burn vegetables, but not as much as with meat and most of the time people aren’t burning their vegetables. Bacon is very bad and I can’t understand how the keto people get away with saying it’s good!

Also... recent studies are showing that carrying cell phones in the back pocket of jeans or slacks is a suspected cause of increasing colon cancer rates among younger men. Studies say the cell phone should be kept at a distance of at 3" to 6" from your body and that many or most brands of cell phones state inaccurate and overrated rf safety exposure levels in their information. Try carrying it in belt holster or the (side leg) pocket of cargo pants. Something to keep at least some distance...

@rudra62

It's not just that. People who don't or no longer work seem to eat microwaveable meals or even what my mother called "convenience foods" back in the 1960s (hamburger helper, or other such meals made from a box with added proteins). I've run into a lot of people, including retirees and stay-at-home Moms who call THOSE "home cooked meals". That, or eat in fast food restaurants. I'm weird. I start with vegetables and meat; maybe rice or pasta. I'm eating the 1970s version of a diabetic diet. The current "GI index" thing seems to emphasize boxed or frozen meals.

I pretty much figure living life at all causes cancer at this point. How to avoid cancer: 1. Don't eat 2. Don't drink anything, even water is contaminated now 3. Don't breathe 4. Don't touch anything 5. Don't ingest any substance at all actually 6. Sleep but don't sleep too much or too little 7. Don't look at things 8. Stay cold and hot simultaneously 9. Exercise every minute 10. Get enough rest. 11. Avoid the sun but also get enough sun. 12. Avoid humans but also interact with them. 13. Avoid technology. 14. Don't think too much but don't be thoughtless. 15. Don't go to work or get a job. 16. Probably just don't come to Earth (Joke 😂)
