Auston, to be honest, if everyone around you is begging, then you are in the wrong circles. To avoid that , you need to be around those who have as much money or even more than you. Your ego may take a hit, but people who don't need anything from you relate to you differently. If you're around desperate people they will only relate to you as an opportunity. Change the dynamics and you'll be networking instead of being "used" or attracting opportunists.

I appreciate the honesty about Africa. It makes sense when you’re trying to budget as a young western traveler. I don’t think it would be a problem for an older man who is financially well off. As long as you don’t move like a wealthy celebrity you should be fine. Kenya is one of the main places I’m looking to venture to when I hit Africa.

It’s like a trap there, they’ll find a way to get money from you. Plus they overcharge you, give you the runaround, etc. don’t for one minute Think that they see you as one of them. At least the locals can explain how things go etc and this should help him a little bit with the scamming part. When u establish meaningful relationships, the locals will actually lookout for you not to be scammed, but first establish good rapport w/ the locals.

Dude Africa is Expensive. I was in Nigeria for 10 months. Dude I WAS READY TO LEAVE. I was fed up with they SCAMMING ASSES. Everyone wants to get a tip for DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Corruption is everywhere and they do shit backwards. Towards the end of my visit I STOPPED SPEAKING to many of the women. The guys were very cool and I made some great friends that I still keep in contact with. The women can kick rocks.

Auston, I'm from Atlanta, and I think you should come back to America for a while as a Black man and then you will appreciate what you have with Africa especially Kenya. As a 48 year old Black American myself that his lived in Japan,, Korea, China, Brazil and all over Europe you will realize one day that other Black people, specifically in Africa and some of the Caribbean is all we Black people really have. In every other continent we are treated as a second class citizens. A lot of what you are unhappy about (higher prices for Westerners) is typical for most developing, third world, countries. Not just Africa. Kenya is a blessing for me. It's one of the few times in my life that I have felt "free" as a Black man while getting to live in a more or less modern society also. Ethiopia, Rwanda, blessings for me. I made a lot of money in America as a corporate professional, but the hatred for Blacks in America after time is too much. In Asia, Europe, similar experience if you have been there long enough. South America has some of the worst treatment of all if you're a Black man unless you're are just there for 1 year looking for women to hookup with. Help to develop Africa, be positive, and put everything in it's proper perspective. Africa is all we Black people really have no matter where you come from as a Black person.

I agree about not revealing the lovely young lady’s identity. When I first when to Europe I notice how disrespectful and what back stabbers some of our black brothers are. In a club some of the brothers would not approach any white European they didn’t know unless they saw her with a black guy. They would sometime lean against the wall near the ladies restroom and try to talk to other black guys girl when they would go to the restroom. And sometimes when you go to the restroom or bar they would move in and actually be setting in your seat trying to get her number or something until they see you coming back then they would quickly leave. This was a long time ago. Only the black guys the white guys was more respectful than that.

Many times some of these same black guys was the ones that would show-case their blackness by greeting you with the fist-bump dap while calling you “my brother”. Those are the ones you got to watch. Reason why Aston's journey is so captivating is because it is revealing about the world and the people who reside here, across many borders. In many ways, it shows us that no matter where you go, there you are. And there's deplorable and unseemly behavior built into the environment every damn where - usually due to economics. But it's also uplifting to see a young brother travel around the world, pretty lightly, with a positivity and curiosity about him, documenting along the way. Ive been to Kenya. Nairobi , Mombasa and Mtwapa. When a man deals mostly with women by meeting them online, or going to meat market clubs, it's expected that he is going to be exposed to opportunistic women. It's obvious also, that the bait to have women pay attention to him, flashy appearance, the drinking, the balling has no real value to opportunistic women. All it does is make them assume the guy has a lot of money they need to help him part with. If a guy is only in a country as a tourist, it's not expected for him to hook up with any decent women willing and able to contribute to anything meaningful, except for being in receive mode. So what other women can a guy expect to be available to him? Mostly opportunistic women. If AH was living in Nairobi, he could then set out to find women with the same financial standings as himself, that are looking for companionship ( not necessarily a relationship or marriage ), instead of a walking ATM. But if you deal with women who always have less than you, and you find them within an opportunistic environment, what you see is what you are going to get.

You're too flashy for Thailand, homie (same for Africa, AND SOUTH AMERICA). All these accessories you're wearing and pay attention to, send the wrong message to the ALL the locals. As a result, the locals lose respect for you, and it directly translates into them (whether it's a perfect stranger, a vendor or even A GIRL YOU'RE WITH) CONSTANTLY trying to take advantage of you, get something out of you, milk you, rip you offf, etc ... Basically, when they see you're too easy with money, they take it as you don't value money, so you dont respect money. And, as they're not like that themselves (cause they value and respect money), they lose respect for you and don't value you (it prevents them from protecting your interets/money). For the context of my intervention, I've visited 143 countries, lived in 7 throughout 5 different continents, and I've been living in Thailand for the last 7 years. Take care.

@scraw3 I agree. BUT, I'd say it's as much a cultural (North America) thing, as it is a personality thing, and this guy has been traveling to different places for a while now. So, I will be way less optimistic on the deprogramming capabilities thing than you are. You have (self) awareness, or you don't. You are intelligent, or you're not. You are capable of observing, analyzing, understanding, AND adjusting, or you're not. Most people are incapable of unlearning things. Being a traveler is not being the same person anywhere you go. Being a traveler implements becoming the person (version of you) you need to be, depending on the location, the situation, and the encountered environment. Most people have their body traveling, but not their head (brain/mind/mindset). Americans (not only), from a very young age (blacks being the leaders in this), are programmed into thinking that to win people over (to win priorily women, but not only, it's for all people), you need to IMPRESS them. Insidiously, in their mind, it becomes: if you don't impress, you don't gain value in their eyes. If you don't have value in their eyes, you don't have value, period. This type of behavior is an illustration of it (combined with the personality). Take care.

It's real easy to blow money in Africa because you feel everything is so cheap. Some countries I was there for 2 weeks and others at least a month, and please I spent money like crazy. I was probably spending at least 100 or 150 a day sometimes more, so you definitely have to temper yourself.

In SA the women I met off dating apps, and woman I met in general never ask me for money, but if you take them out your spending like 100 150 a night plus there uber. Sometimes it's less, but if you have a regular chick you'll spend way less Money for sure, the chick I was cool with would cook for us so it saved on the eating out every night and drinks.....

But be prepared, even well to do African women who have their own dough will still expect a man to pay for dates. You'll spend less, but you won't be completely off the hook in terms of spending money.
