This is the 42nd tour of our series, THE REAL TOURS, in which we provide an in the moment glimpse into a place with off-the-cuff commentary completely intact! No research, no script, just RRR letting you in on their insights and observations walking the malls.
Everyone knows the Playground Pier mall by now. A shining example of a doubly failed and über dead mall, it is a stop along any dead mall enthusiast's itinerary for sure. With a prime location attached to the Caesar's casino in Atlantic City, NJ, it really should have been more successful. Known early on as The Pier Shops at Caesar's, it was a high end fashion mall catering to the aspirational upper middle class. Being in Atlantic City during the rise of legalized gambling in nearly every state in the country, this didn't fare well, as you didn't need to come to AC to gamble as a rich famous person anymore. So the mall suffered alongside the casinos. Fast forward to today and we have a husk of a building with maybe 5 tenants left total. The amazing synchronized fountain is long gone, first filled in, then the entire wing blocked off. The observation deck at the end of the pier has been closed for a long time and now the wing is blocked off. Seeing the decline of the city in general it makes sense to me.
This tour was recorded on September 2, 2023 at around 5pm.

I would argue the Playground Pier mall is a microcosm of what has happened to Atlantic City overall...

This is sad. I love how this mall looks as specially the section with the blue ceiling and the view of the ocean. Sad to see it’s dying. Thanks for recording this. You guys are awesome!

Nice window view outdoors too. September 2nd, 2023 it was still warm for the people on the beach there. 2023 went too fast like all the other years.

Sad to see it so empty but it's huge and with the lack of brick and mortar stores these days the inevitable will happen.

This place is literally hanging on by a thread. It is really a shame what has happened to Atlantic City.

I don't get it how does a mall like this don't do good when it's in Atlantic City with all those casinos and is always busy because of that. And why is it that's there's people still walking through when it's a dead mall I thought dead malls have nobody going through them but this 1 does is it cause they're all passing through just to get to the casino?

Atlantic City has similarly gone downhill also. Your image of it is outdated and not accurate. The city is quite run down in most areas and the crowds don't visit anymore because every major city and town has a casino now, there is no reason to make the 2+ hour trek to AC anymore.

@@RawRealRetail ok I get it now so ya that could cause every casino there to close and if that happens I wonder what they would turn it into would it be something like Manhattan in NYC or no?

no

They turned it into high end shops and ultimately that killed it. When it was just regular shops it was very busy place. They should have just given the place a face lift and left the nature of the place alone.
