This is the real Yama Arashi!

Simply magnificent! Looked deceptively like Harai from the side, but the over the shoulder rotation is always found in a great yama arashi. Magnificently done!

@greenbay357 No it is no joke. That is why it is called Yama Arashi. Yama meaning Mountain, and Arashi can be loosely translated to mean Storm or Tempest. Done correctly, it is a very powerful throw, a very nice throw.

i couldn't find a vid of Aiki jutsu version but the idea is the same in Judo as well. Tori is supposed to pull uke straight down so that uke would land his head-first on. they didnt do that coz it would be too dangerous. ( uke nearly hit his head@0:20) and i think this is the best yama arashi video in youtube ;)

@MrHenka83 Yama Arashi is on the Nage board in Danzan Ryu. My teacher is second generation from Okazaki. I'm a nidan and have seen it on Nage on every board i have seen for the last 12 years of Danzan Ryu training.

judo it's very impressive the way How it's used a way how you throw your opponent it can come in handy in a real situation depending how the fight goes nevertheless I think it's a pretty good martial art judo is something else goodbye with karate or any other martial art it can be very powerful despite it being used as a weapon and then today it really doesn't matter all that matters is how you defend yourself and how you use it to take down your opponent or anyone that may want to try to hurt you or do something wrong to you or say something wrong to you and all the pains and how it's forged and how you do it right 🥋🙏😌🙏🥋

@aspenrebel When I was a boy in Japan the names of throws at the Kodokan were always mixed up. Judoka and sensei would ofteh call the same throws by different names. There were of course some sure bets that were never confused - uchimata, tomoenage, katagruma, ipponseoi. The names of throws are simply a starting point if you know what the names mean. If not - why not just spend the time perfecting your throws with the endless repetitions that are required to really master a throw.

@TheMule71 No, not a "personal difference", just NOT Yama Arashi. Remember Yama Arashi is a "principle". It is not a Seoi Nage nor a Tai Otoshi nor a Harai Goshi. If someone says they are doing a Yama Arashi, and it looks like a Tai Otoshi Variation - then it is!! It's not Yama Arashi. There is a "lifting" component, with your hips down low. "similar" to the lifting in Tsurikomi Goshi. But the lift and lowering of your hips, in Yama, is not as extreme as in T-Goshi. This, here, is Yama A

@kumastomps In fact. If you watch the 1943 videos which are from the original dojo in Hawaii, they demonstrate the technique and its not like it is above. I'm pretty sure that Wally Jay is the tori for most of those techniques.

In Danzan Ryu our yama arashi is different. In Judo this is there standard for the throw. However shiro saigo did practice daito ryu before he did judo. there version is not like this either. If you can find video of daito ryu doing the throw or some aikido styles doing the throw. Its attacking shoulder and elbow. So in a sporting way it would not be safe to do. Modern judo version is safe in comparison.

@ezpariah Perhaps what you claim Saigo did in a tourney was Yama Otoshi and not Yama Arashi. Yama Otoshi would not utilize a leg sweep. The throw in this video cannot be "closer to Harai Goshi". Harai Goshi is a Koshiwaza, Yama Arashi is a Tewaza. There is no hip involved in the throw in this video. It is a hand technique.

Hips are more in line with the Uki's hips and the throwing foot is much lower than in Harai.

Hello. Yes, I understand your question and one that is understandable. After reading the information in the excellent book "Kodokan Throwing Techniques" by Kodokan Head Master and 10th Dan, Toshiro Diago Shihan, the difference between this technique and the standard Harai Goshi, is not only in the hands but in the sweeping movement. In Yama Ashi, when done properly, you are supposed to lift your sweeping leg up - with the leg being slightly bent to support the weight and to prevent escape, rather than slicing through your opponents legs with a straight leg. I found finding this technique in Diago Shihan's book very interesting, as I had always seen people do what people called "Yama Ashi" as a Tai Otoshi with a circular entry that changed directions in a similar way as when doing Uki Otoshi. So very interesting to see it done properly.... and how funny that most people in the west do it wrong..... lol

Harai goshi involves your hip swinging into uke’s hip, thereby sweeping it back and up. In yama arashi you do not apply force directly to uke’s hips; instead you pull their lapel and push their leg.

bluedynamitemetranom. This clip is taken from a Kodokan produced and approved video. You are in fact in correct it is not their Japanese nationality, dan grade or serious nature that entitles them to know what they are talking about and demonstrating. It is the fact that they were deemd worthy and knowledgable enough by Kodokan high dans that makes them qualified to demonstrate Yama Arashi.

Well, I'm no expert at all, it seems to me that Yama Arashi should be a lighter throw with little body contact - ala Tai Otoshi - while this one is a stronger variant, closer to a Seoi Nage. Look at 0:38, you can see Tori's hip is almost entirely below Uke's center. Compare to v=46veLgINFjU#t=262 , focus on the body contact: there's only a minor contact (4:31). Overall it has a more "lighter" feeling to me. More of a hand throw, less hip/shoulder. Can be just a personal style difference, tho.

@Grove2000 What is "more of an ashiwaza than a koshiwaza"? Yama Arashi? Yama is a "principle" one of the 67 of The Kodokan. It is classified as a Tewaza. Period. You cannot change that, so don't try. It is NOT an ashiwaza. What would make you think it is an ashiwaza? It is a hand technique with your hikite and tsurite working together. Please don't try to "re-classify" the Kodokan.... you can't!!

X me uke cade sempre sul fianco/lato come morote seioi nage o uki goshi.
@laokon

you are right, the originel yama arashi was unbeakable, just don't forget that judo was designed to be educationnal and kano threw most dangerous technicks out or changed them.

@ezpariah Once again ignorance and arrogance prevails. This is straight from the horse's mouth, The Kodokan (Judo HQ in Tokyo, Japan)......."15. Yama-Arashi (hand technique) Yamaarashi: Tori uses both hands to grip Uke's right (or left) collar and right (or left) sleeve to push up Uke's body off balance to right (or left) front forward. Then, sweep up Uke's right (or left) leg to throw down or apply techniques similar to this technique." Notice it says "Then, sweep up.... leg".

@vito445 I would tend to think that IF one throw would hold "mystery" for you and keep you motivated to study Judo until you could learn that throw, then Yama Arashi would probably be it. IF learnt correctly that is. Remember to learn the underlining "principle" of the throw. It is NOT harai goshi or tai otoshi or seoi nage or anything else. It IS Yama Arashi..... PERIOD!! Gambatte!! ---- Go For It!!!
@saltyseaweed
@saltyseaweed 15 лет назад
So you are better authority than the Kodokan on their own moves? And I would like to see this taekwando practitioner doing judo throws that you are talking about . . .You can cross train, but when you are studying judo, you are a judoka.
@aspenrebel
@aspenrebel 13 лет назад
@mmilos11 Ahhhhhh... NO... not exactly. Yama Arashi is NOT Tsurikomi Goshi with a leg (sweep) !!! It is Yama Arashi - PERIOD!! It is a Tewaza, hand technique. T-Goshi is a Koshiwaza, a hip technique. The "principles" are competely different. Please have an understanding of what you are talking about before you speak. Simply cuz it has 1 or 2 "similar" aspects, that does not make it a T-Goshi. The 2 throws are completely different.

@ezpariah So I don't know what you are talking about, nor do you, obviously. Nor do I know what "throw" you are doing. But what is shown in this video IS Yama Arashi, done correctly. Anything else is either a variation on this, not Yama, or a Variation on another throw. Do not try to change the Kodokan's "principles" and classifications, cuz you cannot. You are incorrect. Why don't u learn the truth instead of adulterated versions in tourneys that people claim is Yama?

bluedynamitemetranom You make unsubstantiated claims to expertise, insult other posters and give no technical analysis of the demonstration. Kindly stop giving thinly veiled insults to other posters and give a technical analysis of what is wrong with this yama arashi demonstration. Then we can debate properly. If you don't and continue just to make spurious statments and provide no evidence everyone will think you're a troll and you wouldn't want that would you?

@bluedynamitemetranom So it would be nice if you could stay off here, and stop your self promotion. I suspect that you are an MMA enthusiast as well. Tori, in this video, did not execute it as a typical hip throw as you claim. There is no hip in it. It is a hand technique. This is not Yama Otoshi. This is not Australian Judo, This is not British "Syllabus" Judo. This is Kodokan Judo, how Yama Arashi is suppose to be done. This is not being executed in a tournament where it'd look diff.
@aspenrebel
@aspenrebel 13 лет назад
@bluedynamitemetranom I'm really not sure what you are babbling about, nor is anyone else. But you say you are an Aussie, which explains it. You Aussie's and your British Judo counterparts tend to "reinvent the wheel". You like to remake Kodokan (Kano's) Judo in your own image. Give new and diff names to throws, change things and claim this is how it is suppose to be done. When it is not, it is not original Kano/Kodokan Judo. The throw in this video IS Yama Arashi, it is NOT a hip throw.
