Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

Wow! Lots of nice rain. 🌧 i hope it will give you a good topping up for the up coming summer. Here, in Nova Scotia we have had the worst wildfires ever with a touch of arson here and there. Anyway, after a week, we are now getting rain. So hopefully things will get snuffed. The kitties and doggies cuddle puddle is so adorable. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦🔥🌧

So loved all the snuggly footage of the little kids. Frankie is always such a little star 😁. I'm so happy for you to be getting rain. Hope your wells and water containment all get filled to capacity. I've started my first ever garden, of my own. I've helped others with their established gardens but never planned and planted one myself. My seeds are sprouting and it is just so exciting!! It really encourages and motivates you to keep going and doing more. I'm starting small, so as not to get overwhelmed at first and so that I can le out already thinking about how much more I'll do next year.

Muito obrigado o vidio foi excelente e a musica de fundo muito linda mesmo a calhar com a tempestade. God bless you ❤❤ 🐕🐕🐈‍⬛🐈🍇🍏🍐🍅🥕🍉

If I remember correctly, it becomes a marrow when it gets huge and the skin thickens to the point where it will store well in a cool spot. Not quite as long as a squash, but decently long! Once a year, my Mom would ask me to grow one for her that was twice as big as that one so she could stuff it with a ground beef and rice mix and bake it.🥰

I know with cucumbers, if you allow one to get really big, your plant will think its job is done. Its produced seed and it can die now. And the plant stops producing and dies. I imagine its the same with zucchini. Constant harvesting of the smaller fruit keeps the plant active

Frankie is such a sweetheart. She is so loyal to her family. It makes me emotional when I see how much she loves Clarissa. You wonder what goes on in their mind. We have had three dachshunds over our life and each one of them proved to be so loyal and loving. Frankie must of been ecstatic when Clarissa returned. What a welcome she must have had. Love how Frankie helps with the gardening. So cute to see him digging in the dirt where you are planting.. Will you be making pear wine? You have been blessed with a bountiful harvest by the looks of it. Enjoy your paradise. All The Best!

Tomato issue is known a blossom end rot. With inconsistant watering the plant is unable to pull the needed nutrients from the soil. It generally is not a problem with a lack of calcium in the soil. In extreme heat watering the plants twice a day will help. That being early morning and evening. Cherish the rain, no matter when it comes, water is life in these times of drought!

Those front leg only gogga's are called dungworms or grubs. They do eat hair roots, stunting growth in your plants - even killing them. But there it does not stop! They're the larvae of beetles, that'll chew up all tender green leaves. That being said, apparently they're quite beneficial to your compost heap - & once the chickens🐓 discover them there, they'll make a bee-line back to your compost heap, every single chance they get!😂 Ps: there are different types of beetles, whose larvae are grubs of different sizes.

If you are going to do a vegetable garden on land that holds so much water putting rased beds in would be a great solution, firstly the roots will go deeper in search of water and when it is the rainey season the veg plot will be able to take the rain. Also, make sure you put in enough for drainage in rased beds

Lovely homestead, lovely animals. In the high desert here, the early residents all had small windmills - they look like toy airplanes in the air - they still have them but these days, there are more solar panels, of course, plus cities. However, for completely off grid, perhaps a small windmill or two might be good for times when the sun is not out.

You two have inspired me. I’m not off grid, but I moved to a remote town along way from my usual city life in Australia. Its now time to start growin my own food. The rabbits and deer have already had enjoyable night time picnics on my flowers, and Australian native plants. Tho Kangaroos rarely come close to town. I don’t have fencing yet to keep the deer out So, It’s Time to put some thought into stopping them all gettin to the veggie troughs. I think just covering them up at night will be the solution. Hmmmm. Maybe.

Since you asked; here in Colorado, where we live in the high desert region and boast sunny skies, we've had nothing but rain, all May & now June. I grab a cup of coffee & book in very early a.m., get several hours of reading before thunderstorms roll in. I have a hunch this may be your weather pattern, too. I believe this is a global phenomenon in areas that typically see sunny skies. Not, completely sure. I wish you well in your off grid living & your garden flourishes.

We missed out on the April pour so I think May is trying to catch up which is great as I was a little terrified about the idea of our Portuguese summer arriving and it already being SO dry since March… so this rain is welcome and the thunders storms even more so, they always get me excited as I love them so much. Such a magnificent boom of Natures voice. So… a thunder storm filled summer in my books would be marvellous!xx

Here in Western Australia, it's a very similar Mediterranean climate to Portugal. Every cycle or so, we will have a warmer wetter winter, where we'll get monsoonal rain from the Philippines that lowers down into Australia for winter, and rises again in summer to rain in the tropical band in the far northern parts of Australia. Some years it lingers longer in the lower parts of Australia and we'll get rain through summertime when it's usually dry. I'd hazard a guess there is a similar pattern in the Northern hemisphere.

Lovely rain, good for your grapes. This video is a good illustration of climate change as opposed to global warming, it’s just all over the shop. Eastern Spain, Valencia region also a very wet goodbye to Spring, farmers worried about fungal problems on tomatoes etc. I do think you should have spread your water melons out more, maybe dividing that bag of compost into 3 and planting further apart, that’s a lot of hungry and thirsty plants all drawing from the same bit of earth…all the best 🌱🌱🌱😎
