So.. What do you think? CompE or is it not worth it? 🤔💭
@TheUnix105
@TheUnix105 7 месяцев назад
maybe it depends, if wanted to work on either end of spectrum probably CompE is not worth it. If undecided then CompE maybe a good start.

I'm a sophomore in CompE. In my opinion, I enjoy learning all the hardware in a class setting because I can learn software on my own with just a laptop. Same can't be said for big FPGA boards and what not. That said, once I hit my higher technical electives I'll probably lean more into software just to be better rounded. I want to work on control systems, I think robotics would be really neat.

I always thought that a computer engineering degree was the strongest since you know the best of both worlds. The best way to use the degree is to find a job where the two sides interface. This is mostly seen in embedded systems, which I do. Awesome content please post more!!!

CmpE is a great degree, it dependent on the curriculum. Most university of Technology in my country offer an extensive knowledge of EE n SE which means students who studied CE excel in SE or EE. In my country CE is a combination of Computer Science n Electronic Engineering.

It'd be better if Comp E electives were replaced by classes that actually related to your major

Microcontroller, embedded, firmware, chips design jobs itself presents a huge chunk of job opportunities. And CompE would most certainly beat out SE or EE for jobs in these fields

Yep, a lot of jobs here! I would generally agree with second statement but it very heavily relies on curriculum, which varies depending on country and university. Thanks for the comment!

Totally on point about the need for extra-curriculars! I personally think its a great advantage, having the option to branch in software or the electrical side later on in the career, cuz sometimes you need options in life as your mind evolves with the passage of time. Great content!

I work on embedded systems as a Computer Engineering major, at my company many people like sticking to only hardware or only software making my skills and interests needed.

I acatually see compE students doing better at engineering and design in general, since we have the ENGINEERING part of the curriculum

Conclusion: Tailor your degree to your plans and aspirations. Are you going to be working for someone or yourself? think straight.

For computer science, you can’t rely on your college degree to get a job in this job market so it does not matter much either way . For electrical it depends which part you wanna focus on a Comp Eng will usually have more experience in FPGA/HDLs on average. Fields like HDLs/Embedded Systems are made for computer engineers.

The claim that CompE only learns the intersection of cs and ee is not true. Assuming cs and ee have 0% overlapping, CompE would take 50% cs and 50% ee. However, cs and ee do have overlapping. CompE can take more than 50% cs and more than 50% ee. Plus CompE may have multiple concentrations that lead to software or hardware focus. Don’t forget that ee is not 100% computer related, CompE is.

I'm a computer engineer. Demand is very high and you can go many places or develop ideas. You can go into software or electrical, or computer engineering specific topics like networking. Safety critical software systems are going to be important with everything now running on computers.
