There's no such thing as an "addiction" to social media. It's just a tool, that many young people prefer to use a lot. It's not damaging and people put it on a pedestal as if it has so much power to enslave people. It doesn't. It's just screen with images, colours and text. We choose to go on it or not. I doubt this is the reason gen-z is weak.

The driving force behind the enfeeblement of Generation Z comes down to two things: 1. Fathers not being present in the home 2. Fathers who are present in the home, but who are so emasculated that they might as well be absent.

I asked her 'what can your generation do that ours cant?' She tried several answers. Each one was completely wrong. When she asked 'OK, so what can your generation do that mine cant?' Answer was 'to start with, we can have a conversation without getting angry, upset or defensive, we can approach an issue with reason, rather than shouting and protesting before we understand both arguments, and we can show respect and manners' No lie, her response: 'oh wow, really useful. I have to disagree. People always bring up "oh but we have all these modern conveniences". I and many other young folk would happily give up air conditioning, tv, social media, modern comforts if we could belong to a society that upheld strong values and community. If life right now is so great, explain the record high mental illness, suicide, lack of motivation, etc. The list goes on and on and on. Yes, we have modern comforts, that doesnt equate to a happy or fulfilling life. I do think many gen z do need to fix their work ethic a bit, but a social contract goes BOTH ways. You cant tell them to fix their work ethic if nothing changes on the other end, otherwise there is absolutely zero incentive to do so. Its really not that complicated dude.

as a GenZ, I think our bad shape isnt primarily about hardships, its about sick unnatural social changes because of technology, social media and all of that. That isolation, uncertainty, and endless possibilities on each step are pushing us into nihilism and maddness, at least the weakest of us. We often grow up thinking that life is bad and pointless and from that point any hardship starts to be unbeareable because it's being withstand for nothing, for life that I don't even want, just surviving in fear of what torture comes next
@pjjmsn

Good point. That is why it is so important to try to find things that are meaningful to do which combats the nihilistic thinking and makes life worth living. I learned that from Jordan Peterson. And it is working for me.
@TheHeggert
@TheHeggert 7 месяцев назад
Meaninglessness. I've always said that's what is driving this. This is a post Christian culture that now believes we are here by accident with no real purpose and nothing after it so live it up. And when that hedonism doesn't live up to the expectations or they don't experience the happiness they thought they'd have with an unfettered life, it becomes meaningless. My daughter's unexpected pregnancy saved her from that nihilism. She's got purpose and joy even though it's hard. So, ya, it's not the hard life that makes this generation depressed, it's the meaninglessness. And they think self care, selfishness is the answer. 😭
@pjjmsn
@pjjmsn 7 месяцев назад
@@TheHeggert I agree and I think that the idea that everything is meaningless is being pushed along with the idea that selfishness is the answer as you point out. The interesting thing is that acting selfishly and self-centeredly leads directly to a meaningless life with all the deep suffering that goes with it. When we act that way, people don't like us and we become emotionally isolated. On top of that, we produce nothing of meaning. Very sad that people are being duped into going down that dark path.

If all it takes is high home prices for depression to set in, then buckle up. Life gets a hecka lot harder than that. Live in an apartment, get a roommate. Heck, find a spouse. Do something uncomfortable for a bit so you can grow and mature. It's not all their fault, they see constant curated images all around them and all their friends break their backs to live up to that standard so they think that's the only way to live. I'm 50, both my hubby and I have post grad degrees, but have 2 older vehicles, lived in the same modest home for 22 years and take maybe a vacation every other year. Gasp. The expectations of young people is bonkers. But that's the fault of social media. Get off it. Appreciate what you have.

I'm a single Gen Z-er. I don't disagree that grocery prices have dramatically increased. But I've only seen my grocery bill increase by $10-20 per week. I think it's because I grocery shop the old-fashioned way: I plan out my meals for the week, create a shopping list, and only buy what's on that list. I also cook all of my meals from scratch instead of buying frozen meals. I've noticed that instead, other young people just walk around the store and buy what they think looks good. When you do it that way, you will lose a lot of money. They also tend to shop at stores with higher prices because they have a better "environment" instead of going to Walmart or Aldi. Not to mention they eat out a lot. So I'm not going to pretend that I know everyone's spending habits, but if you're saying you can't afford to eat every day because of inflation, that's something you should probably look at.

As others have pointed out, part of the problem is the absence of fathers, and another obvious problem is the obsession by the young with social media. Another serious problem comes from the predictable, but ignored, repercussions of the Cultural Marxist lunacy that breaks down and deflates young heterosexual men, who have always been the backbone of Western civilization. What has come along with that is the imposition of burdensome high expectations on young women who are expected to be ambitious and to put career ahead of family, even if they have no desire or talent for that. And all the sexual confusion by the promotion of the LGBQT lifestyle is the final nail in the coffin.

No. It's not that people today are completely weak. It is true that previous generations had much harder lives however, previous generations also had something really important that we lack today. Purpose. All of the things that gave people a sense of purpose are either gone, dead or a pale shadow of what they once were. Things like marriage, family, religion, community. While our struggles pale in comparison to those of our predecessors, we are the first group to suffer through them alone without support from each other. The anxiety isn't because the sun is too hot or a plane flew into a building or any of that other stuff. The anxiety is because we're atomized, isolated and lonely. Lonlier than any generation before us has ever been. The problem isn't individual, it's societal and we feel completely powerless to change it.

Hypocrites mainly... also the hardcore ''values'' regarding some rights and moral values which considering our stage as humans should either be altered to our present understanding or simply erased.. but again, for me religion should seem as something more private rather than publicly announced and promoted given its nature, how it divides people and creates idiotic problems from literally noting.

Most neighborhoods are not like that anymore and people have never been less connected to those that live right next door in this digital age. While I can appreciate that sometimes you do have to "suck it up and deal with it" the message you are sending, "virtually every generation has had it worse than you so stop whining" is not one of hope, but of resignation. It is the reason so many men and women choose to end it rather than live because they don't see a path to greener pastures. Certainly a refocusing on what you have and what is possible is key to improving anyone's life, but respectfully I don't think that's what someone would takeaway from your message.

Pride is killing everyone. The generations have just been a loop of being hurt, not being able to cope, growing up never receiving the love that overcomes the trauma, and the resulting hardening of the heart to pridefulness. Everyone's hearts are hardened and they just accept that this is reality, resulting in another generation where it begins anew. We don't need more pride. We need to be broken down and brought back up in sincere love and humility that is found in Christ Jesus. If this is viewed as weakness, so be it. However, it is the truth.

As a 23 year old Gen Z I agree with Matt, but there is one thing that I wanna add in defence of Gen Z. With all the comforts that people have in the modern times, people are getting further and further away from things that can't be bought with money, from the authentic lifestyle. People became more isolated and estranged from each other. It's harder to make friends and find partners to make family with. In the age of social media and oversaturation of information (most of which is garbage), not all but most people became less focused what makes them more superficial, materialistic and childish. I also noticed that people started wasting more time on the superficial entertainment rather than have a meaningful life goals. Thus it's much harder for people to have dreams like becoming a great artist, scientist, explorer, etc. Because people think that why do all of that if being a TikTok influencer pays off more. In the modern times you can earn more money from being a degenerate Twitch streamer than from being the next Leonardo DaVinci. Also the sudden rise of AI doesn't help the situation. Gen Z's were born in the extremely nihilistic and materialistic time. No doubt previous generations had harder struggles, but unlike them most Gen Z's have nothing to fight for.

Just because no one was talking about panic attacks in the past does not remotely mean they weren't experiencing it. Nobody was talking about diabetes in the 1700's so should we assume no one was suffering from it? Of course not. We understand more about what people experience physically and mentally and so now we have language today that reflects what we know today. My WW2 veteran grandfather born in 1919 suffered from anxiety for much of his life. My mom knows that beyond a shadow of a doubt from a variety of experiences even though 'panic attack' wasn't the way in which people described their experience back then. Is anxiety overdone and over medicated, not doubt, but acting like it didn't exist in previous generations in the midst of their challenges is entirely erroneous.

They weren't allowed to leave their parents or an adult supervision for most of their childhood. They weren't challenged and were constantly protected. They were only allowed to go outside with an adult. Which is something most adults do not normally do. Meaning that they generally did not go outside. They were raised on the internet and largely by the internet. We have failed this generation.

In defense of people crying about 9-5, a lot of it isn’t the job itself. It’s the commute. When the “8 hour” labor law was put into place, people didn’t envision what cars would one day do to society. Before, almost everyone worked in the town they lived in. Now, that’s rare. Most people have a 20-30 minute commute, with a 1+ hour commute not being uncommon. That really drags out the day and increases stress, especially if you live in a traffic-heavy area. Now I don’t think that circumstance is bad enough to cry about, but we must admit it is problematic for the workforce.

People in the 1800s were absolutely talking about “ills of the mind”. Search “reasons for admission 1864 to 1889”. It shows about 100 reasons why women were admitted to psychiatric hospitals (compiled from log books of the West Virginia hospital for the insane). Some reasons include laziness, hysteria, religion, quackery, novel reading, asthma, greediness, jealousy, feebleness of intellect, falling off a horse in war, superstition and “hard study”. Husbands would routinely use these absurd reasons to have their wives taken away and locked up.

A big reason why they are weak is because they were raised on the internet and social media. The oldest ones were born in 1997, and by the time they were 8 - 10 years old, MySpace was already the go to social media site. While I will argue that Millennials are also weak to an extent, they had actual childhoods in the late 80’s and 90’s. They were raised with the Boomer economy still growing, which gave them a plethora of good Hollywood movies, shows, and so on. They also had toys like Super Soakers, and actual slot car racing kits to build and experiment on. Gen X was the last generation to grow up in an analog world. Boomers of course were allowed to roam outside, had far less restrictions, and were more free, as long as they got home before dark. Gen Z has none of this. The more unstable ones never had a real childhood, and easily break on social media. They can’t take edgy jokes.

I blame a lot of it on the anti bullying campaigns and the "don't fight back, go get a teacher" attitude. I got bullied quite a bit as a young kid, it taught me to stand up for myself. When I started standing up for myself, many of my bullies eventually became my friends- which taught me forgiveness and self-awareness- they were picking on me because my reaction was amusing, and looking back I can't blame them, I was a spaz. I learned to have a sense of humor about myself. So many weak people now who don't know how it feels to get punched in the mouth, then to hit back, then to laugh about it

Both of my grandfathers also fought in WWII and both were in some pretty brutal situations but were able to live pretty good lives after. I feel it's similar to why marriages are becoming more rare and failing- people think "oh my parents didn't make it together why should I get married?" Yet there's plenty of couples out there in their 80's who have been together since their late teens/early 20's. It's all about wanting to DO BETTER than what you were given so to speak.

Panic attacks is what Matt's generation and mine (Gen X) know of as a "mental break down". The generation before ours knew of it as, "Freaking out." A true panic attack isn't something someone suffers on a weekly or monthly basis. That's just anxiety. Normal anxiety, and they can't deal with it. The medication they take for generalized anxiety is an actual 'chill pill'. It offers nothing what just taking a walk can do. It's quite the lucrative ploy. I fear for these young adults because if/when faced with a true crisis, they will not survive it. True panic attacks are quite serious, and they are to be taken seriously. While they will rarely put the sufferer's life in immediate danger, the person will usually have a very strong sense of imminent doom, and places them in a perpetual state of fear that takes months to recover from. The issue they also present are the tendency for the sufferer to make extreme lifestyle changes in an attempt to prevent having additional attacks. While some changes can be beneficial such as reestablishing their faith, incorporating healthier food choices, or going to the gym. Some people might make sudden and brash decisions that are detrimental to their livelihood such as quitting their job, leaving their relationship, or even relocate to another state. Try to recognize the behavioral patterns in someone who says they've had a panic attack. If they all of a sudden exhibit strong, sudden, and extreme changes to their behavior, chances are they are suffering immensely in the wake of a mental breakdown.

Thing is these issues are vast too, I've seen people on the verge of collapsing physically and psychologically do the exact opposite of what you said especially for people that are not sure of their beliefs or have none at all. They delve deeper into their addictions, do less and less productive things until they hit rock bottom. Nowadays the only way of knowing if someone has issues is by having a rather deep conversation with them.. the ones that suffer most likely don't come out because of the people that cry about having to work 9-5 (which is imo nowadays kind of a luxury when most of the jobs require you to pull 12s) and other ridiculous issues but that's normal considering that silver spooned people have been existing across pretty much every fkn generation, it's just that now they are more vocal due to the internet.

It's good to see someone who actually understands what panic attacks are. And you are 1000% correct! I have dealt with them for years and it got so severe that I became agoraphobic for a period of my life because I was so terrified of having another attack. A lot of these people need to educate themselves and understand that panic attacks are no joke! Most of these gen Z kids are not even having actual panic attacks. They can't even handle words they don't like. A panic attack would put a gen Z kid in an insane asylum. They could not handle it.
