THE RED-HOT SNOW TENT. ALONE AND HAPPY

Winter is finally back in Northern Canada. I am so pumped to set up a hot tent and use it in the cold weather again. Nothing beats camping in the snow and fighting to keep warm. In this video, I am setting up a bear tent and I am making really tiny kindling and I'm eating bannock and bacon and I'm fixing a super old Coleman Stove.

24 hour darkness here now in our area in Northern Canada. On the newer green Coleman I remove the washer on the first burner, seems to burn better now. The second burner does not have one so you're not missing a part. I don't recall that washer on the old ones I have.

Love the video, Jay! When I'm watching you struggle with some of the challenges, I just want to say, "hey, try this..." I wanted to suggest putting a loop of cord on your tent stake loops, so you could use bigger wood stakes without compromising your tent. Also wanted to suggest burying the stakes under snow, but then noticed you only had an inch of snow or less. Here I am making comments, but you're the guy out there braving the elements. LOL Great job, my friend! I learn from you all the time! (I had to look up "bannock")

I’ve used Coleman white gas stoves for decades. They are great when you want more heat than most propane stoves can deliver. You did a good job with it but I wouldn’t recommend using it inside. The generator turns the liquid fuel into vapor when it gets hot enough. The risk is getting too much liquid fuel to the burner before the generator is hot enough to vaporize it. Thanks for the video Jay !

no those flames are NOT right .... they should be blue with occasional flecks of orange ... and you should see the jets around the plate ... your elements are old and dirty and should be replaced ... replace the junction inside as well ... those are great stoves ... and they used to come with wind shields on each side ... they will cook 6 2lb lobster in abut 15 minutes ... just off the federal beach of North Rustico Harbour ;)

I believe those stoves take a few minutes to warm up before they perform at full pressure. The tube goes over top of the first burner so it can further vaporize the fuel travelling through it, but takes a few minutes of heating up before it can do so.

Yep, I used to put some alcohol gell on the burner under the generator and light that, to preheat the generator, then, just before the gell burned out, I would slowly open the gas and it would lite easily.

Hi Jay, with all the modern materials that you use and promote in these modern times, what is the story with starting a fire with a flint ? Is it something that all you cold weather people have to prove to each other via the channel. I like your show and you do a lot of demanding stuff. Out do your competition and start a fire my rubbing sticks together or hitting 2 rocks together, if you could do that is would be super amazing as you keep saying.

I love that you left in like 5 minutes worth of failing with the ferro rod instead of doing what most youtubers do and cutting to the single successful strike. Way more realistic. Starting a fire that way can be super annoying with wind, moisture, the wrong tinder, a crappy rod like you had etc.

The flame on the Coleman stove need to be blue. If there is any yellow in the flame it will soot the bottom of the pan. The little lever on the left side, according to Coleman, up is to light, down is for cook. I think the heating of the fuel through the tube is what gives it a cleaner burn? Just my guess on that, but I have owned and used them for over 30 years.

Take a file to the backnedge of your knife to get a sharper spine edge. Did that with my Morakniv and makes a big difference. I agree that the full tang is not necessary. Lots of knives out there without and unless you are hammering on it to baton wood, it shouldnt make a difference.

Hey Jay I believe you're pumping that tank wrong. There is a hole in the center of that pump button you put your thumb over it to push down and when you get it all the way down you lift your thumb and pull back up then you put your thumb over the hole push down and repeat. Make sure you don't lift your thumb on the down strokes or you lose your pressure how to make sure you push it all the way down till it stops then lift your thumb. You are pushing air into that little hole using your thumb for a valve in a sense. So push down with thumb till it stops lift some pull up till it stops push down with your thumb and push down till it stops then lift your thumb pull up and repeat I bet it will work if you give it about 15 pumps. The same way you pump the old gas Coleman lanterns

The problem using a griddle like that is like usually puts his over a bunch of coals or his gasoline stove but his griddle grease usually goes in fire if you use it on stove top you may have to deal with a lot of boiling hot flama le grease depending what you cook .also they make light weight griddle pans with handles on them that are non stock that fit easily in back pack
