About The Red Sleeve (옷소매 붉은 끝동):
In Korea during the first half of the 1700s, Yi San (Lee Junho) is an aloof and perfection-loving young prince. His father’s killing haunts him, although it leaves him in the position to take the throne once his grandfather - the cruel and ruthless current king responsible for Yi San’s father’s death - dies. He has resolved to become a benevolent monarch who will reform the law when he eventually takes the throne, but the way his father was killed has scarred him emotionally.
At court, he meets a young woman named Sung Deok Im (Lee Se Young). Yi San falls in love with her and tries to convince her to become his official concubine. But Sung Deok Im is strong-willed and free-spirited. She is also intelligent enough to understand that becoming a royal consort to the future king is a prestigious role, but one that would restrict her freedom and likely bring her little in the way of joy. But Yi San’s love for Sung Deok Im is true, and she starts to understand that forming a union with him could ultimately benefit his troubled realm.
This drama series was based on a 2017 novel by Kang Mi Gang.
“The Red Sleeve” is a 2021 South Korean drama series that was directed by Jung Ji In.

Lee Jun-Ho's performance and acting in this K-drama was freaking phenomenal. But it was also equally match by the outstanding performance of the Female Lead. So i dont why only Lee Jun-Ho got so much recognition in The Red Sleeve. Lee se-yeong is an underrated actress.

@@chick621 A the end he always gave her the choice to refuse him. Since the beginning he asked to be his concubine and every time she refused him and he didn't do anything to force her. He loves her and respects the way she is. He is the king and he could order to her to go to bed with her no matter what. Remember, it was XVII century and women are less than nothing at that time and also she was a servant and the daughter of a traitor, her position was not ideal.

People who think he didn’t respect her, do they think if she felt threatened or feared him she would have spoken to him they way she did (freely). She dared him to punish her and this hurt his pride (a very human thing by the way) and he explained what he (or other kings in his place) could do if he (they) really wanted to force their will on her. That’s why he said now you seem afraid coz she didn’t fear him at first (nor will she just this once through the entire series). Keep in mind this was the 18th century where women had little or no rights and were treated poorly but if you read the history (evident in the series) I would say he treated her with respect and gave her a choice, in esp 16 as well as telling her to leave the palace as she wanted freedom and he can’t bear seeing her wanting her but not having her. He persuaded her and tried convincing her of how much he loves her and want to be with her. That is love and respect.

He didn't want to disrespect her as we see he was not some controlling bastard but he threatened her and her dignity, he didn't disrespected her actually he disrespected their own love and disrespected what he owed to her ever since his childhood and in the end it all resulted in her disrespect They both are humans of equal pride even though they didn't had same positions and even though she had less rights because she was a woman but that doesn't lessens the amount of pride she had in her personality and in her heart and more though if you get less rights your pride hurts more than the one who enjoys freedom and authority from the childhood, so, in the end, it was her whose pride was hurt the most The pride hurting from which the king suffered was very little than the pride hurting she suffered especially in second last episode Moral is :their love story in the end became like a little bit of those filthy disrespecting Wattpad and novelcat kinda stories, but the king here had a little more dignity than the men in those novels of wattpad He was greatly lucky to have a person like her to be his court maid, she was too smart and too loyal and solved his problems risking her own life multiple times even though she could have just stayed away from crown prince's business and enjoyed her job and life with friends without getting involved with him She did too much favours upon him in the name of duty and the end result and benefit she got from him was to be stripped down from her freedom, from her self-respect by the hands of "benevolent" man she loved The king was selfish when it came to love, if he truly wished to pay off the debt he owed to her, he would have let her go completely and let her live the life she always wanted, he wouldn't have put her in the immense pain of sharing him with other women, wouldn't have put her in the pain of changing her life completely and just be a miserable consort She was like a free bird, and there's a truth about free forest birds, if you cage them and even if you provide them with best food, they'll never eat it and die of hunger, because being caged mess up their psychology of freedom and authority upon their own self Last two episodes were deep in that aspect Writers tried to write the king's character as benevolent as they could but finally they showed that he's that typical king afterall who puts his own immense desires upon his loved ones desires and forces them to do things against their will Some stupid fellas taking that threat lightly where he threatens her to use her for one night and she would be discarded if she don't submit to him, That's a huge blow on the self-esteem of a woman having pride like hers İf the women doesn't find it insulting and don't see it as the threat to their dignity and pride then I think such women are dignity-less actually And lastly, that was the one and only historical series where women actually act like they have dignity, pride, and authority upon their own selves, not like other historical series where those women are slave by minds İt is one thing to be a slave by duty and other thing to be slave by mind I felt too much proud for that court lady and that villian court lady too, those were wounds of her pride being hurt and the betrayal of that grandfather king that she wanted to took revenge And coming to our female lead,her visions are example of standing tall and firm with pride in life, always backing up loved ones and especially holding onto dignity and freedom when it comes to love life with king even though at the end she gave up running from him and accepted the caged and powerless life But writers made her die at the end, that was very good,it was damn great, in ep 16 king forced his love upon her and she took it like a good slave🤐🤐, that love story in ep 16 was too tragic to watch but she took revenge by dying, by doing only one thing she could do for her freedom, by taking herself away from him, at least it showed she had power over that portion of her life that king couldn't control, and that instant regret of king of forcing her to be his shows us that he knew he was wrong, very very wrong and he was her sinner, that's why he showed his regret when she was dying He was a good king but was a good husband as good as one can be by forcing others, at least he was not some psycho control freak He was enough good than any king could be in his position But good and bad aren't recognised by positions, they are simply good and bad He threatened her, insulted their own love by insulting and forcing her because she rejected him, and he did it all because he had the power to do soo, too pathetic I admired that actor in the start of series but now I feel that king too pathetic that I don't even want to watch that actors face for some time😐😂😂 Anyways, it was damn great and sorrowful too that she died and got her revenge on him and got her freedom from that caged life This can only be understood by those who truly honour their freedom and pride over love And lastly, why would women accept those women-hating rules of always staying in palace, having huge responsibilities but not a single ounce of freedom The women who didn't Rebel against those rules when they were being installed in first place were idiotic women İf you don't rebel against the rules that cage you, then you are that much power at that time and they feared their lives but they just needed to be brave İt is us who make ourselves rise to power, if we don't do that and instead make us weak and vulnerable, people @@ibnebatuta4868 well you said he forced his love on her but I see it as persuasion ( that’s what men do when they are truly in love) and don’t forget she herself said on her dying bed that if she really wanted to get away from the king she would have done so and he won’t be able to do a thing ( judging from her character I know she can do this). This closes any agreement that he forced her to be his concubine. Also when she came back to the palace the king still asked her to let him know for last time if she would CHOOSE to be with him or not and she didn’t let go of his hand and finally choosing him out of love ( although betraying her needs) but the main point here is, she had a choice and decided for herself. If she didn’t, how come he wooed her for 14 long years? Remember the movie is depicting events that actually happened in history. Also I didn’t say she had no pride. It is in fact her pride that led her to ask the king to punish her rather than being good to her ( asking his sister to take her in as she had no where to go and is from a poor family) even though she hurt him( by not trusting him to save her friend). When you put things into perspective one could argue that she cared more about her friend’s safety that the other court ladies whom the king tried saving all not one. Also her rash ( understandable ) action could have caused great damage to the king, queen and the other kidnapped court ladies. However she did what she thought was best and judged the king too quickly.

@gomomma6649
@gomomma6649 2 года назад
@@LADIES2023 I agree yet disagree with characterizing her as a bit of a drama queen. It is true that he has to operate by custom. On the other hand, no matter how much she loves him, she does not want to be concubine. In this scene he spells out for her how much worse her life could become if she continues to turn him down. The system in place will treat her badly. In a different scene, she says that he is dear to her but she is dearer herself. A great romantic relationship cannot happen without respect for ones self as well as for the other would be partner.. In the very best interpretation of the phrase, "To thine own self be true."(Polonius's advice to his son, Laertes in "Hamlet.") she does not want to give up the essence of herself because in his world she will be seen as completely his. The reality may also be that her wonderful, though frustrating sense of self, is at the heart of what he loves about her. YiSan is a remarkable man, especially because he can pretty much do what he chooses (including killing her and bedding her without her consent) but he chooses to love her and treat her with enormous respect even while venting his anger.

Yes. She provoked the king intentionally when she asked for the punishment arrogantly; that's a harsh rejection of his love. And she always knows how to provoke him, not to mention she is too smart when she wants to survive(to preserve and to fight for her freedom; that's the very thing I love and respect her)and how good she knows to hurt the one she loves. On the other hand, the king, expecting her thankfulness but got rejection from her (again!!!) He's angry and frustrated.He did hurt by her harsh words and finally paid her back(for him; it's a little bit. But for her, it might be devastating HUGE)., but eventually he hold his anger. Couple fight! Being overweight sensitive and vulnerable like two children.

Some of y’all really don’t pay attention. For those saying it’s not respect or whatever, do y’all not realize what time this was? Literally the 18th century when women weren’t recognized at all. And he’s a prominent figure so the fact that he wants this woman but she’s not willing to give herself to him is basically like disrespect in his eyes so he’s gonna hurt her before he can get hurt. There’s no backing off. If a king wants something, he’s gonna do whatever it is to get it. But he’s giving her enough respect to even think about it and give him an answer as well as letting her have the freedom that she desires because he loves her.

She loved him too, but her last defense for mental freedom was to not admit it. If she hadn't died of cancer, they were very happy together. Also, it was a calculated choice of her and him, because the new concubine was mean hearted and would have hurt her any chance she got.
@gomomma6649
@gomomma6649 2 года назад
I so agree with you. And critics who object to the other concubine and are upset with San, seem to forget that San has to live according to tradition just as surely as does Deok-Im even though San loves only Deok-Im.

@gomomma6649 2 года назад
@@elizabethburrell4756 No. None of San's/Deok-Im's children lived. She was pregnant when she died. However the son that was born and was the crown prince did live, I believe for 3 years, before he died from measles which, at that time, was deadly for many adults and children, not only in what is now Korea, but around the world.
@gomomma6649
@gomomma6649 2 года назад
And this would have been true even if Deok-Im left the palace again. She lived the life she lived outside of the palace because San loved her so dearly that she was under his protection the entire time. I think it is important for us to understand she lived the life she wanted because she was under his protection. I have never before read that an angry passionate kiss, after 15 years of a man loving a woman who he knows loves him--even though she won't say so--is the equivalent of assault. He loved her. He knows that she loves him. And I am sure that she loves him based on her willingness to protect him even though she knew she could get killed in the process. What motivation, other than love drives her to protect him, at the possible cost of her life, and what drives him to protect her even after she leaves the palace.? As I was rewatching the series this past week, I could not help but notice something that I noticed happening the first time but not its possible significance. It begins with the end of episode 15 after she has pulled the sleeve of his robe. Basically he asks her if it would make a difference to her if he commanded that she become his concubine and if that is what she wants. And she says that yes this is perhaps what she wants, for him to command her. After the scene where she is accused of adultery and or being the daughter of a traitor, San commands Lady Seo to bring Deok-Im to his bedroom that night. Remember Deok-im has said that if he commands her, this may be what she wants. Yet when she is finally in his bed, she pushes against him and clearly signals that this is not what she wants. Is his response one of anger/rage? No. Instead he first poses a question to her. If she chooses to reject him that night, is she ready never to see him again? He then tells her that he is going to let go of her hand; and if she lets his hand go, then she and he will never see each other again. Well, actually he says that she will never see him again. By the time of this bed scene, she knows that she had been under his protection for the entire year that she was gone, a year in which she was very happy. Is it not possible that even though she did not want to live as a concubine but as a free court lady, that in that moment she realized that all the freedom that she had came directly from him. All these years, it was not just she protecting him, but he was also protecting her (There were plenty of people who wanted to she her dead just because he loved her and just because married or not married, she loved him more than the head court lady or the Queen Dowager who had told San that she could have killed Deok-Im when Deok-Im rejected her offer for Deok-Im to become the Dowager's permanent servant in order to rescue her from the violent concubine. But Deok-Im rebuffs the Dowager Queen's offer. What else could the love between these two have been other than a love that is the combination of the four loves as the Greeks described them: Storage--"empathy"; Phil--"friendship"; Eros--"romantic/sexual"; Agape--"unconditional", love that makes San love Deok-Im enough to let her go that night or that makes Deo-Im choose to stay with him. If some of you have not yet listened to the letters of condolences that San wrote many years later in tribute to Deok-im, he was still missing her. There are seven. Great stories and great storytelling in all its forms (poetry, filmed drama, dramas we read, live dramas, musicals, etc.) have the power to challenge and change us. And we are more than lucky that two outstanding actors portrayed the two lead characters with such conviction and love for San and Deok-Im. I have a son who considered acting as an actor. And I remember something he told me. One of his acting teachers who also directed him in a couple of plays, told all the actors and actresses that no matter who your character is, you as the actor portraying him or her carries the burden of defending him or her, no matter their faultts or weaknesses in your performance each time you are on stage." That is the kind of performances we received in "The Red Sleeve" series. (I will come back later to correct any errors I may not have caught yet. I did not mean to write this much, but I love the series and what else can a former literature, writing teacher and choral musical director do when the story telling is so great!!!)

Do you think if she felt threatened or feared him she would have spoken to him they way she did. He persuaded her and tried convincing her of how much he loved her and want to be with her. That is love and respect.

Agreed, San is clearly still angry and this scene is most definitely meant to be read as threatening, and if you see it as anything else you need help. Compare this to the scene in ep 16 where he actually gives her a choice (even though it was more like an ultimatum, but it's probably the best you can get in that situation) and is prepared to give her up if she so chooses, THAT is respect.

If you been paying attention it shows Deok Im has real feelings towards Yi San that go beyond the typical court lady - master loyalty. She is in love with him but considering her place as "lowly class woman" and how dangerous court life actually is she chooses to repress her feelings for him and that means pushing him away/turning him down. Deok Im mentions that despite her "class" and what is expected from her she wishes to be able to mantain some agency and independence in her life. She already said it once on the show "The crown prince is dear but myself is dearer" Accepting the role as Yi San concubine is not a guarantee of happiness cause the royal rules are intense and closed off and she will have no more freedom that what she has now and she has to share him with the world and more women. It is a painful situation for anyone involved tho. I. completely understand Deok Im hesitation to accept Yi San advances. This is a historical adaptation of the real love story between King Jeongjo and Uibin Seong which makes it even more sad.

Dramas tend to portray the men as more obvious in their affection than women and it makes the women appear callous for not appreciating or reciprocating the man's love. In reality, the women are realistic because they are usually at a disadvantage since the man has all the wealth/power. She tends to have more to lose whether it be her chastity, reputation, etc. It doesn't mean she loves him less, but life doesn't exist on love alone.

she isnt mean she is realistic. She knows she cant do much but be his weakness if she becomes his concubine. (plus if any woman loved a man they just couldn't take the pain of having to watch him be with other woman. No matter what time period it would be painful and cruel. And might lead to her becoming something she is not. A lot of woman go down a dark path trying to get into the favor of the king lol most historical dramas are legit about those fights. Where sweet woman turn into conniving terrible people.) Plus she wants a normal life which he can not give her. Sometimes love is just not enough you need a since of stability and etc. Which bc of him being king he can not give. At the end if she asked him to chose her over his people or etc that would be selfish bc she herself is like that too. She would rather run in a burning fire then leave her friends and other people behind. The moment with the empress dowery should be an example. She knew she couldn't trust her but in the time of saving her friends and other workers she was willing to step in hell to get them out. I can understand her troubles! As much as you can love someone life can sometimes just be unfair. She can not give her all to the king and she knows it bc she herself nows she has her own selfish desires so she can not willingly agree to marry the king and be his concubine bc that is not fair since the king himself lost in his love for her is trying to give his all when he cant or sometimes shouldn't... plus that throws her in the cross fires of a war she just doesnt want to be fighting its wrong to ask her to go into that when she just is not willing too. These two actors show amazing chemistry and feeling behind the characters showing all the emotions of the struggle to want to be happy without the complication of status and politics. bravo actors !!!
