A little walk over wood lane bridge and with a magic key the gate opened. This urban exploration goes through the tunnel and takes me south down the yard and to near where the depot was a hotel and a car sales place occupies a bit of the ground. Then I walked on the remainder of the line back to wood lane. Then under the tunnel that lead to another yard. Sad times I would of loved to have seen this place in operation.

I took a lot of the lines up as a young boy in my first job working for a local scrap firm the place was absolutely massive in it's day

I remember going to a Depot open day in the 1980s. The place was a hive of activity, locos everywhere. It is so sad the way the railways have declined in this country.

I went on a school trip from Devon to Tinsley depot around 1985. We walked down a path by a golf course from Darnal station to get there. I still have lots of photos. Lots of locos there. Thanks for sharing.

So sad 😞 I had many a good day watching master and slave shunters pushing lines of wagons over the hum......👍 I even saw the odd class 76 Tommy’s come into the yard 😃 We’ve only too look at our roads after the demise of the railways......😩 Thanks for the video Stevie A 👍

Blimey Nature has reclaimed that place! I always thought the yard control tower was still their but obviously not! Should never have gone, you have EWS to thank for that.More track left down than I thought there would be.Good video and brings back memories of a happier time prior to 1998.

I would of loved to have seen this place in operation. However I didn't start my railway career until 2007. Sad times really

Barbara Castle was sacked from being Transport Minister when she mooted a cost benefit survey for HGVs. European freight transport is locked into road haulage because it is payed for by the taxpayer and it's high cost can be masked. Ernest Marples said once he needed millions of motorists to subsidise heavy lorries which grind roads into dust like the M6. No monopolist wants to pay their true costs. They palm them off onto us. The logistics is lazy but damaging. We pay in many ways.

Tinsley is now a very busy place with a thriving container terminal, and aggregates and steel traffic well represented.

After watching the 1966 video talking about how 'modern' the yard was, this is super interesting.

Last time I was there was in 1978, at your video time between 00.17- 00.55, If I remember correctly The diesel depot was on the right hand side where it now looks as though its been cleared & the shunting yard was on the opposite side of the bridge looking towards the newly built units, last time I looked down here was heaving with wagons & allways 2 x Class 13 shunter units, That place is a shadow of its former self along with all other diesel depots over the country, now sadly disappeared.

It seems that railfreight in this country plays a minor role these days, it's all about passenger services and turning closed or seldom used lines into tram and light rail systems. Mean while the loss of freight depots means more HGV's on our already over crowded road network.

I was a freight driver for 30 years and things have definitely changed a lot, our freight yard has more trees growing in it than wagons these days and your lucky to get a charge man and shunter per shift. Our depot had 150 drivers now it’s lucky to have 38 today a far cry from having 3 shunt engines working 24/7. no wonder transport for the North stated 90% of freight goes by road these days.

@@22pcirish Rubbish/ U.K RailFreight from and to U.K manufacturing and `heavy industry ` in the 1960`s- - still surviving even as late as early 1990`s. Was on a WAY Bigger scale than anything in recent times or present day

The man ultimately responsible was Keith Heller the last Canadian CEO appointed to slash and sell EWS. The British management and unions hierarchy were all complicit. They basically ripped up the rule book and re wrote it to suit themselves. asset stripped the lot made it look good on paper and sold what was left to DB Shenker. Makes my blood boil.

Such a shame to see the once mighty Tinsley like this , but how about donating the lengths of rail to a preservation society and building affordable housing on the hundreds of acres of ex yard ?
@craigymac5386

This is just total vandalism. How can this possibly be progress shutting down these yards and adding yet more lorries to the road And all you hear about these days is environmental issues.

Tinsley has a busy container terminal as well as seeing regular aggregates and steel traffic. We just don’t do wagon load traffic anymore.

I'm actually really annoyed about how it turned out. I did record it on a decent phone with a lot of mini videos. The recording seemed ok when I edited it. However not to RU-vid. I'm going to try and rework. When I get a chance.
