I didn't believe really believe Brian from @NextLevelGardening when he suggested that potatoes can be planted in the autumn in any climate. This video proves me wrong.

I sure love your long term experiments! There’s so few good videos for cold season gardening on you tube! Some times feels like It’s gotta be a little bit crazy to try and live in where we live. You in zone three, and me in zone 2 in middle manitoba. For the record I have had edible carrot tissue survive out doors till spring, but only JUST.

Glad you like the videos. Yes, we’re probably a bit crazy to live where we do but I still think it beats the heat. 😊

How did the Fall planted potatoes do by the end of the season? Did they catch up to the Spring plantings? I was wondering if they put any effort into sub surface growth before putting leaves out that would allow them to do well the rest of the season.

It may be possible to plant them more shallow if u can cover the area with hay bales or leaf bags. Some people keep root veggies stored in the ground in very cold conditions over the winter, just covered with hay bales n tarps. Wouldnt do that myself though; i have a root cellar for that plus i hate the idea of needing to do anything extra outside when its cold (and here in finland it is cold 🥶 )

Yes, that would probably help. I didn’t find any real advantage planting them in the autumn, but it was interesting to find out that I could.

@@shortseasongarden i see 😇 same here pretty much. I know they survive here quite well since i tend to have quite a lot of voluntary spuds appearing in my garden beds 😀 but normally the weather is miserable in autumn and nice in spring time, so it makes more sense to do this garden work in the spring!

They weren’t spectacular at all. I would say they produced slightly less than the other plants. The one positive thing was that, because they were planted so deeply, they required little hoeing and there was no sunburn. I’m wondering if I could have planted them more shallowly and still had them survive the winter. As it turned out, this was a fun experiment but produced no real benefit over typical spring planting.

Not sure that planting in the fall is any advantage. It’s just neat that it works.
