When I went to Bible College and had a Professor tell me that I needed to "know why I believed what I believed" I never thought that it would take me so far from Christianity. It was the dive into the origins of Christianity that was a game changer. I so relate with the "destined to hell" that others want to place on me.
@Cat_Woods
@Cat_Woods Год назад
I went through that after I left Christianity - intense fear of hell. I faced it at the time, because I realized I'd rather be tortured than worship a cruel person for eternity. Worshiping a cruel person for eternity would in itself be hell - that's what I eventually realized. I don't worry about it anymore, because it seems so much less likely that there's an omnipotent but heartless God than some kind of loving God (with limitations) or no God at all.

@@Cat_Woods also, it's a nice catch as everyone will go to a hell according to relegion. Christians to a Muslim hell, Muslims to a Christian hell, and all the, others, non believers and Atheists to either or of the two above, once I gained a clear free head from relegion, the whole hell concept seemed so ridiculous to me, here I am, someone who loves eating prawns and has probably worn fabrics of mixed clothing, and for that alone I'm going to have to die, my body is going to rot, then magically come together again, only to be burned alive repeatedly for eternity for doing it.

Keen insights? Intellectual honesty? How little you realize how self-blinded and naive you show yourself to be, how much your and his quality of due diligence and resulting self-inflicted blindness is showing, what a price you'll both pay for it, if you don't undo that blindness before it's too late, by: 1. improving your quality of due diligence on the most unmistakable evidence of God's existence, and... 2. discovering the Bible's actual origin of Christianity, which is neither the NT nor the usual messianic prophecies, believe it or not If you and Miller had truly done quality due diligence, you'd know that the gospel, Christianity, God's only-possible solution to sin and its resulting evil, is all laid out in rich, detailed, symbolic object lessons in the sanctuary service, believe or not. And no amount of fictionalizing and criticizing the NT by Miller or any other "scholar" is going to change that, I'm afraid.

@@AighEnoughAlready , I agree. Be a contrarian to generate attention and sell a book. It does not mean he is right or wrong. My question is “Did disciple Mark had a master’s and doctoral degrees to research the Greco- Roman culture before he wrote “The Gospel According to Mark”?
@AighEnoughAlready
@AighEnoughAlready Год назад
@@teresatanyag8237 Teresa, believe it or not, he didn't need to research that culture. It was all fresh in his memory. And what wasn't, the Holy Spirit refreshed. By the way, you do know that these biased scholars' late dating of the Gospels is not due to evidence, but instead to their materialistic bias, right, their disbelief in prophecy, since they speak of the destruction of Jerusalem, due to their neglect to do quality due diligence on the most unmistakable evidence of God's existence? The truth is, they were written only a decade or two after Jesus returned to Heaven, which means that they're reliable eye witness testimony. And like I said, you don't realize how embarrassingly naive these scholars are, thinking that the Gospels and epistles are the Bible's origin of Christianity. They're not, nor are the usual messianic prophecies. The sanctuary service is the actual origin. It's true. Every element of God's eternal and only possible solution to sin and its resulting evil is all laid out in richly-detailed object lessons in the sanctuary service, believe it or not. I encourage you to improve your quality of due diligence, before it's too late.

We all pause and think oh crap what if we are wrong and end up damning ourselves to hell for eternity. Speaking for myself I paused a few times throughout the last 30yrs. That's a testament to how deep these cult like belief systems go. It's hard sometimes when your taught from the cradle God is all powerful,knows what your thinking so you better be good and follow along or else. Even if God exists, he need not behave like a human to favour believers and show displeasure over non believers, regardless of their righteousness. Can a good CEO be displeased with you and disregard your talents just because you do not know his name? If God only favour believers regardless of their righteousness, then he needs to have an egoistic and nepotic character like worldly tyrants and corrupt politicians. The idea that one can go heaven without cultivating himself to higher spiritual standard is as silly as cramming unrefined squatters into premium residential estate and still expect it to remain a premium property. Anyone claiming their religion is the only true religion needs to first prove that only their believers were continuously blessed by God since antiquity. Cheers. Modern research on Near Death Experience by Raymond moody, reincarnation memories by Ian Stevenson/Jim trucker and past lives regression by Brian Weiss all independently but coincidentally show that our consciousness survive death, we live many lives and our thoughts and actions matter in the hereafter. So be kind and helpful to others, be virtuous, meditate and cultivate ourselves to higher spiritual levels. Cheers.

There had been, for a long time, a fascination in the Greco-Roman world with Judaism, due to it's perceived antiquity and the uniqueness of its story. This in part explains why the 'God Fearers' mentioned in the bible would visit the Jewish synagogues and financially support them, all while still worshiping gods from their domestic pantheon. The authors of the gospels, and likely Paul, knew of this curiosity with Judaism and saw the emerging Jesus myth as a market to be exploited. The interest in the subject was there, the audience was there, and the gospels fit that particular literary niche. Remember that Paul spoke against the Judaizers who thought that Gentile 'god fearers' had to observe both the Sabbath and become circumcised in order to become Christians, knowing that this message would not resonate with the God Fearers, who are mentioned in Latin and Greek literature, by Josephus, Paul, and Philo, among others, as well as in synagogue inscriptions, many of which survive to this day. These people were probably some of the earliest converts to this new mystical Jewish off-shoot religion called Christianity, and lived mostly in Diaspora communities, so the use of pre-existing Greco-Roman meme's would have resonated with them, and the writers of the Gospel, as well as the Apostle Paul, would have been aware of these memes and used them to tell the Jesus story.

@@LearnwithGern2025 there are authors we know about like celsus, and porphry who say this is based on greek, and roman myths. Justin Martyr also addresses this. One thing i would point out about your comment is you probably have a view of the Christian story. By 100 CE there are multiple Christian stories floating around. If you are a Christian today your story comes from a story floating around at this time. So if you are the author of Luke/Acts, or 2 Peter you are living in around 100 CE. That's 70 years or almost three generations since the crucifixion. Christianity has evolved at this point beyond being a mystery cult type religion to be a religion with a decent following. You might have been born as a Christian. We also know that theists tend to have cognitive dissonance, and frequently deploy very motivated reasoning. So if i go up to you in say corinth 115 CE. Then say hey man that emperor cult stuff is totally based on earlier myths, and is nonsense You would go ya for sure. But if i said Jesus rising from the dead, the empty tomb, and him ascending to heaven is also you would say no I don't understand. The reason why the author of second peter is probably writing that is people are saying these are myths. No theist would apply the standards they apply to other religions to their own religion. When you do you regularly arrive at the conclusion this is an ancient myth. The author of Luke although he does say he is trying to tell an accurate story really just gives us an edited version of Mark. Acts certainly is not historical in nature. It is apologetic in nature, and attempts to rewrite the story of Paul.

When I was 14 years old (boy), I attended a Presbyterian Church. As children we only went to services at Xmas and Easter. We attended classroom teachings by a designated mentor. I memorized every book in the SJ bible and received a copy. One Sunday our teacher discussed Moses bringing forth water from a rock with a tap on the rock. Moses tapped twice and could never enter the "promised land" because of the second tap. I thought huh? That was the beginning of my gradual turn from Christianity. Darwin put the nail in the coffin for me. I now use Bertrand Russell, Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, Grayling, Ehrman, MythVision as my teachers

I think that’s because there is not a central thesis. This is nothing new - their work is not revolutionary. Their point is that the resurrection story has been fabricated from different stories (mainly Greek mythology) from antiquity. But what they don’t seem to answer is who influenced whom? Were those Greek stories influenced by the Old Testament scriptures? Or was it the other way around? If there was always fascination in the Greek world with Judaism and its writings (just like some mentioned above) then is it not hard to imagine how those Greek myths could have also drawn influence from Jewish prophesy? These guys are talking in circles; I want them to specifically target points in the resurrection story and tackle them with claims, evidence, and logically consistent interpretations. Right now, all they’re saying is that the story in the Bible (which I believe is truth) is similar to other stories. So what?

Why is it taboo to discuss the God narratives told to us by organized religions? A draconian culture on skeptics should be defied, it is our moral duty. As reasonable and logical beings, we should be able to discuss any topic. God is knowledge, plain and simple. If virgin birth or resurrection of the dead are put forth today as ideas, we would all say it is crazy talk so why do we accept stories about those concepts from thousands of years ago as undisputed facts? Again "chapeau bas" to Dr. Miller, absolute respect to your professionalism and enlightened intellect. On another note Derek- Please consider a hefty episode on the field of Biblical Archeology and how it tries to retrofit all discoveries into the biblical narrative which is harming the scientific rigor in the field of archeology.

If we go back to the earliest date when the orthodoxy of Christianity was documented, we have to consider Emperor Constantine and the Council of Nicaea. He wanted a religion of universal appeal; even to followers of Mithraism, under which his empire could be united. So it was to that end that the new religion included gospels which were selected, abridged and edited. If the two crucified criminals had to have their legs broken to get them to die; then logically Jesus only appeared to be dead before he was removed from the cross and revived. There is evidence that he subsequently escaped to Kashmir where he lived out his life in exile. If this sounds like a fairy tale, it is more probable than the fable of the ascension. Moreover, the concept that God who is Love would want any blood sacrifice, is unconscionable if not barbaric.
@matthewkopp2391
@matthewkopp2391 Год назад
Except the timeline of that claim doesn’t work out. First issue being the official canonization happened after the death of Constantine. And there were multiple earlier canonical movements. The most important was Irenaeus declaring the four gospels. Which was around 200 AD much earlier than Constantine. The selection of the gospels were for multiple reasons, but primarily to end the Gnostic movements. This was about bishop authority not Roman state authority.

@@matthewkopp2391 Yes, you raise some very good points, which in my brief comment did not cover. In the absence of Jesus and His successor, Peter; His teachings devolved into religion. Whereas Jesus apparently taught the sovereignty of the individual in relation to God to His immediate followers; priesthoods formed into a hierarchies of religious authority to control the beliefs of the masses. Any believers who did not acquiesce to their authority were deemed to be heretical. The anathematization of Origen, is a good example. The convening of the Council of Nicaea was dated 325 AD and it seems that the church leaders were complicit with Constantine.

@@minnaraitinpaa6834 still that does not address the issue with a blood sacrifice as payment for sins. So what if God sacrificed himself? (just one example of many passages) Jesus was a willing sacrifice and also knew that He would resurrect. The whole O.T. is about Jesus. For example the story of Abraham taking his son to be sacrificed where it is clearly stated that God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering.

I am as confident Jesus was a myth or not who we were taught he was, and there is no afterlife, as Dr. Miller, but came to the conclusion without academic study. I attribute my lack of beliefs to a few things, one of which is physics. There cannot be a place in the universe where the laws of physics do not apply. That was it. The end of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Someone once asked me what I do for my "spiritual side". I said what do you mean? I said I don't do anything for it. Actually, I do not need or have a spritual side. I live in the world of facts and not mythis or hopeful dreams of an afterlife where I will be together for eternity with my relatives and ancestors. Besides I would not want to attend an eternal family reunion. What a nightmare. This is another thing. What gives us life is not a soul, but biochemical reactions that take place in the body and brain. We think as we do because our brains evolved highly over millions of years. However, our brains are just brains. They are similar in the composition to less evolved brains. When our bodies and brains die, what composes the disintegrates. The electricity that traveles in our nerves, and gives us thought, does not stay together in an organized way allowing us to think after we are dead. When you throw a rock into a pond, the energy dissipates to all corners of the pond. If you put a gas into a closed box, the gas will dissipate equally to all corners of it. When we die, any energy within our bodies will dissipate infinitely. There is no heaven. Our bodies, energy, chemicals, and electricity, dissipate like everything that ever lived, from the lowest pond scum, to the most intelligent life, us because the laws of physics apply equally to everything. The end. No proof or disproof of Jesus necessary.

If nothing else, I believe this book demonstrates beyond the shadow of a doubt that belief in deification, ascension, and possibly even human resurrection were commonly believed in Hellenistic culture. I don’t know if the author’s conclusion as I understand it (ie that the resurrection of Jesus was invented as a literary trope) is well demonstrated. It’s one possible conclusion, but the burden of proof has not been met in my opinion. It’s probably still more likely than an actual resurrection though! The broader practice/trend of honoring figures with "translation fables" in Greek/Roman antiquity is not so different from Minister Mason Locke Weems invention of the Cherry Tree myth for his George Washington biography. He made it up to express something "true" about George Washington's character/virtue. Also not so unlike Jesus' own parables, the truth communicated was the important part (not the literal truth of the story details). In the Greek/Roman "translation fables" case, virtue/character was also a meaningful factor in who would be honored with the mythic treatment of becoming immortal/divine in the eyes of the people.

I think a good analogy to Homer in antiquity is Lord of the Rings, not just because of how well known LOTR is in modern culture but because it also spawned the entire genre of fantasy. Practically all fantasy owes something to Lord of the Rings. but it doesn't have to be on a one to one basis. Dungeons and Dragons, Game of Thrones, the Witcher just to name a very few franchises all are immensely influenced by LOTR and wouldn't exist without it, yet it's not like you can point out exact analog characters saying and doing the exact same things as LOTR characters. Here's a sample. 1) End time Jesus said some of those standing with him shall not !see death till they see the son of man coming in his kingdom Matt 16:28 Jesus said this generation shall not pass away till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away Luke 21:32-33 2) Temptation God does not tempt man James 1:13 God did tempt Abraham Gen 22:1 3) Earth Earth abides forever Eccl 1:4 Elements shall melt, earth and the works shall be burned up 2 Peter 3:10 4) power of god With god all things are possible Matt 19:26 Lord was with Judah, drove out inhabitants of the mountain but not inhabitants of the Valley because they had chariots of iron Judges 1:19 5) Sword Put aside your sword, for all who take sword shall perish with the sword Matt26:52 He that has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one Luke 22:36 6) crucifixion They crucified him in the 3rd hour Mark 15:25 About the 6th hour, they crucified him John 19: 14-16 7) Jesus Jesus never answered Pilate and Pilate marvelled greatly Matt 27:13-14 Jesus answered Pilate John 18:33-34 8) Sins Everyone bear own sins. Sins not passed to another Deut 24:16 Sins are passed down to the 4th generations Exodus 20:5 All sin thru one man Romans 5:12 Children do not bear parent's sins Ezekial 18:20 Slaughter the children for their father's sins Isaiah 14:21:22 9) god God does not change Malachi 3:6 God does not lie and repent Numbers 23:19 The lord repented of the evil he thought of doing to his people Exodus 32:14 The lord put a lying spirit in the mouth of some prophets 1 kings 22:23 and god allows people to be deluded Thessul 2:11-12 though lying lips are a abomination to the lord Prov 12:22 New covenants given because first eternal covenants given to Jews were faulty Hebrews 8:7 10) Grace Man is saved through grace, not works Ephesians 2:8-9 By works a man is justified, not by faith alone James 2:24 11) Parents Honor thy parents Exodus 20:12 Death for disobeying parents Romans 1:29-32 Whoever does not hate father, mother cannot be my disciple Luke 14:26, Matt 10:34 12) Freewill Freewill in Christianity is a myth as shown in Romans 9:9-24 where things are predistined and mankind could be punished even for things out of their control. The list does not end here and anyone of the above is sufficient to prove the bible is unreliable. This seems to be a scholarly work, but the derivation of Christianity and its stories from ancient religions is pretty well-worn stuff. I have collected a large number of sources on this over the last twenty-five years and put all this together. There is in fact, not a single original story in the whole life of Jesus apart from the time and place and the names. Even his death on a tree and resurrection is derived from the Mysteries of Dionysus as is the Eucharist and a number of other details. Still, putting the stories in the context of the understandings and mentality and spiritual beliefs of those times is valuable.

As a Christian, I have often wondered about different stories in the Bible, and I specifically looked up a video discounting the resurrection to see how unbelievers think. That being said, whether people take the Bible literally or figuratively, I would say I’m somewhere in between, the power of Jesus is absolutely real, and I have faith that God is indeed real. The same power that raised Him from the dead is the same power that drives out demons, and that fascinates people to this very day. Whenever people question, and I leave Christianity, they feel a moment of “oh no” it’s because, I believe, deep down they know there is truth to it, and that moment of trepidation is conviction. I happy to hear that you understand and have experienced the deliverance that comes with following Jesus. God is not scared by our questions, and one day, our faith shall be made sight.

I was just thinking about the Jesus historicity question. The answer should be Yes and No, right? The bible is inherently an amalgamation of sources. So statistically speaking, I'd think that at least one of the sources should have a historical base. Like, there was a disciple of John the Baptist, and on the other hand Peter/Paul were the non-historical parts, and so on. So Jesus was both historical and not historical. He's Schrödinger's Christ.

This is all quite obvious and in line with the main theme of Derek's channel, that the Gospel accounts were heavily mythologized from two sources, Hellenistic belief structures about the Gods, and Jewish legends. OK we have that. But there is a third way put forth by Gregory Riley and others that many early Christians did not believe in a physical resurrection but that the event occurred primarily in dream and vision and later was literalized. First, we have accounts of modern Yogis resurrecting in the flesh so the idea that bodily resurrection is impossible is refuted. But my own experience with my own Guru after he died sheds light on this.Short version. When I bonded to him it was through a long series( years) of transcendent dreams from which i would awaken permeated with ecstatic bliss and love. Thus this experience was similar to Paul (if it really happened for him), intimate contact with the Divine Master away from physical presence. I only saw my Guru once physically in 1985 and it also was extraordinary in power. But after he died in 1990, not only did I continue to get him powerfully in dreams, I got another Guru (who also had died years ago) as well in similarly exceptional dreams. In the last one great one with my Guru, his presence was so palpable i said "I thought you were dead." He then put me in a state of incomparable bliss beyond measure and taught me a life lesson about it. Was he dead? His body was dead. but clearly who or what "he" was had not died. (There is a much longer discussion here about what Guru is I am not getting into here.) So I think two things can be true. What Dr.Miller says I think can be absolutely true and yet be somewhat irrelevant in terms of "what happened*.. It certainly is true regarding much or all of the construction of doctrine Christianity created as a religion and that has profound social, political, and cultural meaning. But on a level of **what may have actually happened** to inspire people, most of whose writings and accounts were destroyed, is a completely different story. If it happened to me, it could have happened to others. This is a site very dedicated to a material rationalist POV and it has its place . But it has its weaknesses and the denial of the idea that mystical reality is part of existence is one of them. My POV would be just as controversial for modern Christians as Dr.Miller's.

My work was not a project of “explaining away” any genuine evidence. I am unaware of any prophecy that could significantly impact the research. Most all prophetic claims in the NT were midrashic reinterpretations of prior texts that had nothing to do with any historical man “Jesus”.. parts of Isaiah were used in the Synoptic gospels to fashion the depiction of Jesus. Those attempts, however, were not only inventive, but contrived. They were not true to Isaiah’s original meanings.

@@thenaturalmidsouth9536 It all really happened, believe it or not. And it was a glimpse of His holy anger, not merely human anger. You'd know you can trust that to be so, if you would improve your quality of due diligence on the most unmistakable evidence of God's existence and Jesus' true identity. You would also know that the Gospels and epistles aren't the Bible's origin of Christianity, nor are the usual messianic prophecies, but instead the sanctuary service. Believe it or not, all of the major elements of God's eternal and only possible solution for sin and its resulting evil are all laid out in richly-detailed object lessons in the sanctuary service.

Nonsense. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of would-be messiahs preaching their message and prophecies in and around Judea, not to mention the minions of pagan salesmen pitching their take on Isis, Mithras, Zeus, and a host of other gods to the pagan masses throughout the Roman Empire. The Roman authorities only forbade those that spoke of insurrection and rebellion. The preaching and pitching of religious cults and practices in the public square was a part of life in the pre-Christian Roman Empire.

@@AighEnoughAlreadySo…You didn’t actually hear the video. Instead you jumped over here to make a condemning statement at Derek but were incompetent and instead commented as a reply to someone else. According to you-we are going to hell-well gee thanks, buckaroo. Here’s your homework-Go back and read the whole bible- cover to cover-which clearly you have not. Then start reading some of what Dr. Miller has referenced. Then come back and apologize for being rude and judging people because that’s in the book. You aren’t supposed to judge people. You aren’t supposed to be prideful. Or act superior. Even you will be judged to have failed according to the Bible. Jesus would be ashamed of you! (if he ever existed).

@@1ofTheChosen ..Listen my brother in Christ. If Satan was able to deceive Judas, who was picked by Jesus, and witnessed miracles, yet betrayed the Lord, I'm not at all surprised smart, intelligent, educated people fall away to Satan's deceptions. The Pharasees had the Old Testament writings, with testified about Jesus, they couldn't discern. Been smart, intelligent, educated doesn't stop Satan and his demons from their work. It's all prophesied, many will fall away from the faith in the Last Days. Derek, thank you for these interviews. I have been through bible seminary but still learning and I identify a lot with you because it's just through investigation, reading, asking and being honest with myself that I'm little by little began to understand how deep the similarities with ancient literature is in the bible. I'm not on the other side yet because I still have a theological way of seeing the bible but I'm looking more into history, the greek classics and Philology, so I'm getting there. I guess I'm in the period of confusion.

Quran 4:157. And for their saying, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him. 158. Rather, God raised him up to Himself. God is Mighty and Wise.

That sounds like a blind assertion by Muhammad. We don't know if they really crucified him or not, it was a penalty mimicking male-to-male intercourse (Seneca Minor, Moral Epistles 101.10-14, see also Pozzuoli Graffito and the Vivat Crux Graffito). So it could be that Jesus survived the ordeal, or Judas "Iscariot" volunteered to take his place by claiming that HE was the J-man and the Roman soldiers believed him, or it was all made up.
