@Green_Stache_Productions 2 года назад
@@user-pq4by2rq9y ehhhh reproductions can be kind of iffy. I’ve heard some stories that reproduction cartridges of N64 games are worse than an authentic cart like some repros not working properly or having the game crash since they aren’t official and don’t have the exact hardware inside them that official carts do. With that being said I’ve also heard that people have had some decent experiences with repros and they seem like a cheaper alternative to the real deal (it really depends who you get the repel from) my cartridge for SMASH 64 is a repro and it works fine for the most part though it’s a bit more difficult to put the cartridge in the cartridge slot compared to my other authentic N64 carts, I find it also gets a bit warmer as well, and there was one instant where I got a messy video signal and had to re plug in my video cables into my tv (it could’ve been my video cables though) other than it works fine for me

@Green_Stache_Productions
@Green_Stache_Productions 2 года назад
@@NineToFiveGamerUC0079 I never said anything about him out right just not playing the game just because it’s hard to collect nor did I ever say emulation or roms we’re out right bad. I’m simply just going through options here. There’s nothing wrong with buying repros but like I said I find their quality to be iffy compared to the real deal which is why sometimes it might be better to buy an authentic copy. But I know that isn’t always the case and that they could be expensive which is where emulation comes in. Emulation is fantastic and a great way of preserving games but like I said earlier he wants to collect the game, not just play it, and if you wanna collect games you usually collect them in their physical state, unless you wanna collect roms. Basically there’s numerous ways to enjoy classical games and none of them are wrong answers. It’s just that each option has their own caveats and all

Sellers at my local flea markets don't even have prices for their games as they just look off eBay for prices if you ask them. It's not worth collecting at this point and if someone just wants to play old games, just download the ROM/ISO and emulate them. It's actually easier to collect the consoles and controllers, plus you can use special carts to load as many ROMs on there if you want to actually play on old hardware

@UCyjF3AIqoFwPbXgVBx4a-Sg it's sad but true. Back when people didn't use the internet so much dahm. I could buy more retro games when I was 6 then now, and I had like 15 bucks back then. I'm only fucking 18. I remember dreaming of finally being able to afford buying more retro titles when I was little, but I never got far. Even flea markets have been asking online price for a few years now. There not even fucking fun to go too anymore, it's just fucking depressing. It al used to be nice old people that sold a SNES or gameboy for 5 bucks, and then games for 0.50-5 at max. Now mf are asking 30-50 for a Gameboy. Some fucking second hand store even tried selling me a yellow burnt in DMG Gameboy for a 150 bucks like JESUS FUXK MAN it's even worse since it's euros like fuck. Now it's just retro = money. At a local indoor flee market this dude is selling games and carts at very reasonable prices compared to their online counterparts, it’s still expensive (like conkers bad furday for $100 loose) but I have gotten a ton from him due to reasonable prices for old cart games ($5-10-15 per cartridge and even some games have cases like old genesis games for the same 10-5 for most and 20-25 for the more sought after stuff like mortal kombat and sonic 2 but the vast majority is cheaper). And gameboy, gameboy color, gba, and gamegear games are $7-30 with the majority being 10-20 and the much more sought after stuff like anything Pokémon etc for $50+ but I’ve only seen the tcg gbc game there. @@TachibanaTengoku Prices will stabilize, because if for no other reason that vendors setting too high prices DON'T SELL PRODUCT, and thus DON'T EARN MONEY. What do folks do when they have stuff to sell that won't sell? They slash prices. Even simply having merchandise has an associated cost... especially if said merchandise has a preservation factor (which retro games do, especially if they're in-box) There are certain lines of antique heritage furniture, century+ old, that sell for far less in the USA than they did 10 years ago... because they don't match modern tastes. This is nothing new with collectibles, prices rise & fall based on interest. Retro games right now are still high interest, which allows for inflated prices. Also, your commie utopia would never have even created the product in the first place. Centrally planned societies with a hate-boner against the very concept of personal property don't produce luxury entertainment products... which is what NES/SNES game carts were when they were being actively produced.

"grading" and appraising are almost the same thing but marketing differences. Appraising is checking the items condition, history, and legitimacy to determine a price. Grading are those who check the details to make appraisal easier or to remarket the item for any particular reason.
@TachibanaTengoku
@TachibanaTengoku 2 года назад
It is, and for the exact same reason, price increases. There's a big difference between a house appraised for 600k and a house that the owner FEELS is worth 600k. I'm not going to spend big money on something that has an undetermined condition, that's just gambling, and is precisely why the current housing market where you pay 100s of thousands of dollars but are unable to even check the property is bullshit.

The retro gaming market is pretty fucked at this point, top to bottom. The WATA-Heritage situation, as messed up and potentially illegal as it is, is a symptom of the wider problem. I mean, even when you go lower down the price ladder and see games like, for example, Mario Kart: Double Dash, DBZ: BT3, etc., game disc only with nothing else, go for anywhere from $50 to over $100 on ebay even though there's like dozens or even hundreds of listings for these games at any given time and they're not fucking rare by any means (especially with, again, just the disc), it really discourages many prospective game collectors from even trying to start. Wouldn't surprise me if many of those listings had shill bidding too. It's why I stopped not just collecting, but stopped selling my retro games (other than trading them in at local stores for whatever price they give me; idgaf about what price it is) long ago. I didn't want to have any part in this greedy sham circlejerk of a system where I'd have to give up/ask for (depending on if I'm buying or selling) a damn kidney just for a copy of Wii Sports or some shit while poor shaming those who choose to emulate due to the insane prices as "evil cyber terrorist peasants". Things were pretty damn bad pre-pandemic as Muta and others have pointed out in older videos, but since the pandemic started and the scalpers kicked things up a gear, it made shit even worse.

The console/gaming industry is old, but I think the collectors market has really only opened up in the last 15 years. And because it is so young, the buying power and demand hasn't reached the insane prices of trading card/toy collectors. I personally think they are forcing an inflation of prices to meet that market rather than let it grow naturally. The high prices they are seeking will come eventually, but clearly some people are too impatient.

i honestly see the retro game bubble bursting once we get to 7th or 8th gen being considered retro. it's where digital distribution really opened up on top of those being the gens where alot companies started porting & re-releaseing their older catalog of games. sure collectors could always try to sell you on the authenticity of playing on the original hardware and not every digital storefront lasts forever but unless game companies start pulling out a "reserved list" on their older games why would i buy a copy of a $5000 game that i could get digitally for less than a fraction of that price that's widely available on everything i own?

"The high prices they are seeking will come eventually, but clearly some people are too impatient." Collectible items that are no longer being manufactured have a natural attrition to supply, & of course supply in part dictates price. But it isn't the ONLY thing dictating price, public interest plays a part too. There are certain types of antique furniture, hundreds of years old, that sells for significantly less than it did a few decades ago... because it isn't to Millennials taste (AKA the current market of furniture buyers). Carnage Heart was a fairly rare PS1 title... you can still get it for $10 because it was also never that popular. Ditto the complete set of Tailgunner Jo (comic book, because I'm pretty sure you never heard of it) I got a few years ago... rare, 40 years out of print... got it for less than $10 because only a very few wackos like me even know it exists. A lot of these vendors are going to learn the law of the flea market jungle... you have to price merchandise so it sells in order to earn money; and maintaining a storefront for something which DOESN'T sell costs you money in & of itself, 'storefront' here being anything ranging from a craigslist, to a stall in a flea market, to space on a website. Doesn't matter, you have to pay for some facility to sell the thing, and you have to pay for whatever/whereever you are storing the thing until you sell it.

For carts manufacturers would still need to secure copyright permission to be able to legally sell repros in most cases. I agree that cheaper alternatives to the original physical release copies will help control price... but the best option is actually to encourage interest from folks like Sega, Nintendo, etc. in their older titles. Black market copies (unlicensed repros, ROMS, etc) aren't going to do that. Some people are always going to get hung up on the legality issue, & the rights-holders will go after any pirate who becomes to notorious. Meanwhile the presence of the black market cannibalizes sales of legit remakes... which makes the rights holders less likely to keep making remakes. While a lot of folks don't want to hear it, the best option to actually encourage better retro gaming options is to shell out for remakes & re-releases, & then complain vociferously about any quality problems. Anything else either requires illegal activity which naturally limits commercial interest, or overturning the relevant copyright law, which is not going to happen anytime soon.

There was some cracks in the case and the side art was faded, but that is not a 27 dollar difference. We need to stop letting them hide behind the "private collector" label. When a game sells for $2 million, we should have the right to know who it was that paid that much for it. When the record-setting sale goes to the owner of the auction house who sold it, that's a clear conflict of interest and obvious evidence of fraud. Anyone who thinks that a copy of Super Mario Brothers is worth $2 million is an idiot. Nobody wants the game that badly, whether it's sealed or not.
@TheEnmineer

I happen to know that some of the merch sold at Heritage gets bought by the execs of that company. It's possible they're buying high to pump their numbers and drum up publicity. I don't think that's illegal, but I guess someone could call it fraud.
@rars0n
@rars0n 2 года назад
@@TheEnmineer I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they're doing, creating "record sales" to pump up the prices of video games. The thing is, when SMB on NES sells for $2 million, that increases the prices of ALL vintage games because it gives the illusion that games can sell for ridiculous amounts of money AND are only going to increase in value (this is true to some extent, but they're not a financial investment like stocks or bonds and there's no guarantee that any particular game will be worth a lot of money in the future). And if that's what they're doing, it's absolutely fraud. They are representing the value of the game by selling it to themselves, and the rating company is endorsing it as a legitimate sale. That's no different than if I were to put my sealed copy of Hackers on Blu-Ray on ebay and then bought it with a sock account for a million dollars and then claimed that it's now worth a million dollars (except I would actually have to pay the auction fees, whereas these people don't because they OWN the auction house). And why do I have a sealed copy of Hackers on Blu-Ray? Well, I was so excited to find out it finally got a re-release that I accidentally ended up buying two of them. In 20 years I'll be a millionaire! But seriously, yes, it's absolutely fraud, and it's totally illegal. Remember, every game that Heritage sells that is illegitimately priced means more money for Heritage at the time of sale. I highly recommend, if you haven't yet, watching Karl Jobst's video on the subject. He did a great job of explaining it in detail. I'm going to post a link to it and hope that RU-vid doesn't nuke my comment like they have been lately: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rvLFEh7V18A.html

They're over 20yrs but many of my later series figures won't be for another 12yrs or so but sell sell for hundreds of dollars some sell for thousands like figures with autographed baseplates which I have a few of. Fantavision is a collector of classic games and has mentioned it many times and I think the both of you making a collab video on this would be awesome. Two of my favorite RU-vidr's. I started watching Fanta for his Tales from Retail series and started watching Muta for his famed Deep Web Exploration series but ended up loving both of you guys and your content!

An interesting theory/unhinged conspiracy theory I hear on Reddit alot is that retro gaming is going to turn into a money laundering market more then a collector's market like traditional art is now.

I have collected NES and SNES games since I was a little kid. It was one of my favorite hobbies but now it is way too expensive to collect actual games. So now I tend to collect homebrews and ROM hacks physical copies. I would love to get back into collecting actual official games but morons drove the prices up of them making it so it is 100% not worth it.

I've been a retro collector for a long time. And I have watched as prices have been skyrocketing the past decade. The past five years prices have really jumped. I always figured it had to do with new waves of collectors due to RU-vid, social media, etc. influence. I knew the Grading companies were out there, but had no idea how much they were effecting the entire marketplace.

I found out years ago just how scummy some the retro collection market could be, when I went to a mall and found Mario Kart and ALTTP on sale for $75. Funny enough, those prices are probably way more common now, even if they're still bullshit. I'm not sure if I'll ever get into collecting again at this rate...

As a person who doesnt collect games BUT collects from discontinued toy lines, I more often than not see a jump in price when it comes to stuff I truly do want to collect on the internet. I resorted to wishing and going to flea markets and thrift stores for prices super cheap from owners who know nothing about what they are selling, its saddening to see people resorting to stop collecting games in general because of the price increase and competition surrounding the finds that are not just rare but honestly common games.

The game on NES that sold the least copies, is the rarest NES game.
@PortCityBalrog
@PortCityBalrog 2 года назад
I would say that while you have point, what if all the copies of that game that sold the least were persevered the most and thus more copies of that game still remain than a game that may have sold more but over the years, more and more copies of it have been trashed and lost. I think a more correct statement would be that he rarest game is the one currently has the fewest copies still in circulation at the present.

Two thoughts: 1. One of the reasons why old comics are expensive is because they were printed on low-grade paper and thought of as disposable, similar to a newspaper. As a consequence, there aren't that many left. Is it at all possible that older games have gotten pricier in part because copies are gradually breaking down, meaning that there are fewer and fewer of them around? 2. The value of a thing is determined by what people are willing to pay. Is it possible that old games are selling for more because more people are willing to pay? If NES games are getting to be stupidly expensive, that could be an effect of the fact that an increasing number of people who are nostalgic for that era of gaming now have the disposable income to buy all the stuff they wanted when they were kids. Then there's the fact that gaming and game collecting are increasingly mainstream, and that collecting stuff is one of the main ways people participate in geek culture. Thanks to sites like Ebay, it's also much easier to find old games to bid on, and you're not restricted to local shops and auction houses. Game collectors back in the day would only be competing against other game collectors in their area. These days, they're competing against the entire world. Non-collectors are also more likely to know that there's a market for these things, meaning that it's harder to get good deals by taking advantage of people's ignorance.

1. No, not yet in any meaningful way. Give it a few decades. Disks will go first, then carts will follow. 2. Yeah, that is just normal markets. Lots of factors led to this all. I thought collecting was getting expensive in 2017 when I slowed down. But now everything I have has pretty much doubled or tripled in price.
