Anton Krupicka is back on the podcast! Few athletes in ultrarunning generate as much excitement as Anton, and he's returned with a bang-recently setting a fastest known time on the iconic LA Freeway route and securing second place finish at the Grindstone 100 this past weekend.
Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, which notably helped shape the ultrarunning culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Anton is a thoughtful and generous conversationalist. He shares plenty of insights in this episode.
While the FKT and race results provide a backdrop, we also dive deeper into nostalgic ultrarunning memories (his friendships with Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Kyle Skaggs), engaging discussions on philosophy (athlete personalities and bike culture), current events (Leadville 100), and his aspirations (UTMB and Hardrock goals).

Finn - you are killing it with content. Tara Dower followed by Krupicka? Awesome. I will wager that I am not the only one to say this: Krupicka's approach got me into trail running and somewhat re-centering my priorities. Thanks Finn for the content, and Krupicka for his time and always thoughtful discussions. It will be fun to see Krupicka at UTMB again.

Used to see Anton on the trails in Boulder quite often when I lived there. I think the last time I was actually on a hike down the back side of Bear Peak with my wife when we heard this series of crashing noises coming behind us. We stopped to get out of his way and it was Anton. As he thanked us while passing us at a high rate of speed, I said, "I can't believe I used to be able to do that." He responded, "I can't believe I can still do this!" Now I'm retired and living in Japan. I was recently diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, which explains a lot of pain that I've had for decades that I just attributed to injuries and wear and tear. I'm 68 years old now and with meds I can still run, but I still can't run down that scree slope that claims to be a trail. LOL Hi Anton! Great to see you on here. P.S. it was my Achilles that wouldn't heal that finally sent me to a rheumatologist who diagnosed me with AS and said the only reason my spine has not completely fused is my active lifestyle so I should not stop.

Anton was a fictional character for most who got into the sport within the last 10 years since he wasn’t racing much. Crazy to think Anton’s return to racing will once again inspire new and old runners alike. His personality and demeanor are timeless. Thank you TK❤

Huge AK fan, and I must say, this interview was awesome. Tony interviews kind of like Jakob Ingebrigtsen, you can tell when he doesn't want to be there, and when he thinks a question is dumb. This was the opposite of those things - super casual and getting to hear old stories about Leadville and dial up internet, just GOLD!

This is the 2nd time in a week that I heard an interviewer ask a runner if they feel that they passed their prime. The other runner was Courtney Dewaulter.

In 2007, could have be 08 or 09, I was training for Pikes Peak on Barr trail. It was pretty early in the day and I had the trail to myself. I believe I was just above the W's, when I heard something and looked up. Coming down the trail was a runner who looked just like Anton. As he got closer I saw that he was running while carrying two plastic gallon milk jugs that had the tops cut off and were filled half way up with water. It was like seeing someone running down a mountain with a half gallon mug of beer in each hand. One of the strangest and coolest things I'd ever seen on the trails. Always wanted to know if that really was Anton.

I could listen to you two converse all day. Even though he is a professional athlete, I think Anton is living a very intentional life. What I perceive as his desire to continually highlight what's most important about his participation in trail running, i.e., the experience of the running adventure, makes me almost embarrassed to be a fan, a voyeur, but I do feel that his thought-provoking observations help me to be a more reflective runner. Thanks for another excellent interview, Finn.

@@runsingletrack It was the right balance between sticking to the script and get side tracked with other interesting ad-hoc ideas. Its true that becoming a great interviewer is a very difficult task. You are on the right track. Getting in the head of your interviewee and condense a thought is so tricky. I see that you try to avoid emotional porn. That is what will keep you interesting on the long run. Keep up dude !! Peace and love.

Terrific session. Anton a first ballad hall of famer. Who do we have to talk to to have a USA hall of fame of ultra running. Since the conversation talked about both David roache and a bit about cycling it Could Be worth diving into what the legends( I’m sorry to keep revering you Anton, but next time don’t be so good at mountain running) of the sport viewed as best performance metrics and how David is really Focused on FTP and watts combined with a high carbohydrate diet during race to break a mountain CR that’s stood for 23 years. He took a couple pillars from the cycling world and executed it super well on the day. I guess I’m curious if you guys believe we could see a shift in the performance paradigm as a result of that. Thanks for the amazing work you do Finn and Anton you Got plenty of great years left

It is interesting to hear how he struggles with the parasympathetic relationship part of his life and is almost resentful of the idenity his incrediable ability and careeer has landed him with . Almost a sort of angry form of humility like some rock star artist have when they become too popular . Must be sucb a pardox . I think hes great

@@runsingletrack I love his take on Leadville too. I do hope to see that race get some more attention. The timing is rough for sure, but I would also agree that the CR is low hanging fruit. No disrespect to David, he still took down a Matt Carpenter record after all.
