My only 2 negatives about this series is 1) that it's over and 2) I don't think it got nearly enough views it deserved. I thought this was a great, clever, and different style of game. Very well done Ox and keep with your excellent work.

Do you wish that there could come additional games that treats the 'Golden Ending' as the canon one? It could be a case set during the year-long timeskip.

After watching this series the second time. I finally get of why the Formosan have the shell. The Shell is a Bullion or a relic owned by the Formosan. It was taken by the Dutch at their Occupation of Formosa that the Dutch seceeded in 1662 after the Emergence of the Kingdom of Tungning. The Kingdom of Tungning uses Hokkien as their language and this consolidate the fact that the Formosan in this game speak Old Hokkien. Here is how I put it: The Formosan Royalties came to Europe, in hope that they can recover the chest and the shell taken by the Dutch. Miss Lim is a Princess or some Noblewoman that represents Kingdom of Tungning in Europe since she can speak English, and It-Beng Sha is a Nobleman that is some sort of Guard captain that commands Hok Seng Lau and Chieh Tan. Since they are Nobles from an Asian nation in 16th-17th Century, they must have knowledge of spirituality or history, thus why they know the Ability of the Chest to shoot out those Energy beam thing against the Mermaids. Their negotiation suceeded, probably due to help of English mediation since they ask the British EIC to help them transport it to, with deduction, their homeland in Taiwan. This also explains why they need Armed Guards like Chieh Tan and Hok Seng Lau since the shell is very valuable and will be dangerous if it was fallen to the wrong hands like 2nd Mate Nichols. The Formosans know exactly how dangerous the chest and the shell is. They asked for the most Experienced captain and the most secure and fast ship the EIC have. Captain Witerrel and his Ship was chosen because Witerrel has been long sailing in the Far East. This is evidenced by the fact that Witerrel has crew members from Persia, India, Russia (Imperial Russia have their land even as far as Alaska at this time) and even as far as the Guineas (Maba, our body tattoo guy) Now why the Captain doesn't know that they carry the shell and the chest until the last moment (He asked about "What shell" to Chieh Tan just about he was killed by a mermaid spike)? Here is why. The British East India Company ordered Witerrel without explaining the Passenger's cargo. Cargos that are not of the company or the crown's ownership can be confidential to even the captain. This is to prevent any captain to just break the contract and sail away with the stuff owned by the passengers. Moreso the case since the Formosan are Foreign dignitaries. How the Formosan got the shell? Well, Formosans are renowned Sailors. They must have got that relic very long time ago because they have developed and made the Protection weapon against anything that will take it.

I like this, where did Henry Evens get the Memento Mortem?
@aribantala
@aribantala 3 года назад
@@ncrranger9154 Oh wow, this comment was from a year ago... But I kind of remember what the story is, so the memory is sorta blurry. What I said there was just speculation from deduction, and this as well. So I think the Memento Mortem came from Africa and Evans got it from expeditions, from; which I guess, Either Algiers or Tunisia Here's my explanation: Henry is a Surgeon for the Obra Dinn, that makes him a Professional Physician which graduates from a Well-known University, Surgeons in 17th Century Europe, mainly Britain, are highly trained Individuals that has Apprenticeship in apothecary and have a University certificate (Remember, Surgeons in this time are equal to Medical Doctors in modern days, while the other "Minor Surgeons" that deals with basic surgery [those minor amputations, practicing basic medicine] and first aids are Barbers, which are still trained members but [AFAIK] does not have any medical degree from universities). With this, as well as him serving on the Obra Dinn for Captain Witerrel, a captain of an EIC Three-decker Indiaman with experience of sailing as far as the New Guineas and Alaska, we can take a good deduction that Henry Evans is also a well-connected individual that have a taste for adventure. This is further evidenced by him owning a Pet monkey. Owning a pet monkey is often associated with explorers and/or their crews. And its crucial for an Expedition to have a Medical professional. His pet monkey is also given the clue of where he might have frequented his expeditions. It is a Barbary Macaque, a species of monkey which habitats is in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco as well as diasporas in Algiers and Tunisia.
@aribantala
@aribantala 3 года назад
@@ncrranger9154 That explains how he might have his hands on the Memento Mortem. But where does it came from? This one is pure speculation. I have a feeling that the Memento Mortem is not solely that Pocket watch, but something on it, which, probably are, the Skull Insignias on the Watch and the Book. Both insiginas are a relic (Jewels or magic stones) which probably made (or found initially [bear with me on this I also have the speculation about this one]) by Romans due to its Latin name. Now see, The Romans aren't often associated with Death magic. But there are people who lives in the area of Tunisia and Algiers on Classical Roman age that do, the Carthaginians. They are often associated with "human sacrifices" on some "sacrificial altars" known as the Tophet (we don't know exactly the sacrificial part is true or not but its very well known theory that the Tophet is used for Eschatology ritual). The Memento Mortem could be a magical ornament of a Tophet that the Romans uncover when they defeat the Carthaginians. The Romans claim the Memento Mortem as their own and put it on a Temple or Magistratum (City Court) of a city, a Temple/Court that Evans and his Expedition might have excavated. My guess are those two because its often where a sundial is and where records are kept, and with that, a dead body can be presented to said temple/court for "Its Death to be Remembered" (That memory reading, time wrap, magical stuff) Not knowing or probably knowing the magic on the Memento Mortem, he installs it on a Pocket watch, and intentionally or accidentally get that time warp magic stuff when he uses his watch upon a dead living being. There is also an interesting fact that he stayed in Morocco, not in Gibraltar. Since he knew he abandoned ship, he thought the English crown will probably sanction him (which turns out he wasn't fined or sanctioned) so he, Miss Jane Byrd, Emily Jackson and Davey James went for Morocco. But why he doesn't move to Gibraltar once he received the message that his estate is awarded instead of fined? Morocco, at the time, was well known to be a very profitable place for aspiring Scientists and Physicians. Moroccan rulers have employed European physicians at their Court, The most famous Ruler known to implement and do this is Ahmad Al Mansour of Morocco (yes, the same Al Mansour in Civ 5). So, It is natural for him to stay at Morocco, not only to avoid British Persecution, but also it is the more Profitable option as well. I also have a feeling he is able to employ Miss Byrd, Jackson and James. And they stayed in Morocco with the same reason as Evans

Possibly the reason for tea when you get all the fates right is because you were considered a very good inspector and in turn were able to make more money in life and could have things like a pot of tea on at all hours as to being a so so inspector and maybe had to live a little more frugal.

I replay the game just for the music. A thing I really REALLY enjoy is the attention to detail onboard. It could've been so easy for the game's creators to not add things like a slaughering pen or plates on the shelves in the kitchen area but they did. I really enjoy things done that way. And the case-solving.. it's flexible! It isn't always only one right solution and that is important. Interpretation of a scene is hard when you're trying to figure out what answer the game wants but if you interpret a knifing as "stabbing" and then it's marked wrong, that's nitpicky. And you have more than one way to figure out identities! Oh, and the story.. madness! Sea monsters, murder, betrayal, mutiny.. dramatic is the only word I have for it.
@EmmaBonn96
@EmmaBonn96 4 года назад
The many ways to figure out the identities is my favorite piece It makes it feel a little more immersive Like everything isn’t laid out just to be playable, it’s how it would be. A piece I love is this The book’s glossary mentions that Midshipmen are often young gentlemen A higher class than the craft masters who instruct them around the ship In the cow scene The butcher refers to Charlie as “Sir”. Ox didn’t need this at all to deduce that Charlie was a midshipman, but they still put it in.

Return of the obra Dinn is an incredible game! Really! I don't ever play something like it. I played this game and have some trouble with seaman's identification. And I didn't find a dinghy thrown in air by kraken, numbers on hammocks, identification of seaman's origin by his full body tatoo. I got near 75% of solvable souls and can try to guess or I can read a walkthrough. I choose the second variant. At that time, to identify all - I think it's impossible. And with this video series I see, how many tiny details I overlooked. It was great to play the game, and no less great, to watch this video series. Thank you very much, Oxhorn!

If I was going to give an easy answer: the power of man Doscovering what truly lies within the sea. Imagine if the East India Company cought wind of legit mermaids, kraken, and wierd crab wraith things living at the bottom of the ocean. Best case, the Brits see a new commodity. Worst, they see a threat to be annihilated.
@ninjabaiano6092
@ninjabaiano6092 4 года назад
If i remenber right Quicksilver is also used to refer to mercury. Back then it was believed to be a powerfull reagent for alchemists to make the elexir of life, i remenber that one emperor even died drinking it thinking it would make him immortal. Soo... They had a chest full of it. Only to use it as a weapon. They used something you could probably use as a dowry for a queen to protect the shell.
@PanAndScanBuddy
@PanAndScanBuddy Год назад
Putting a shell in Mercury caused an energy spout that paralyzed at least three mermaids that were able to kill burly sailors, chefs, even the ones armed with guns. You really need that sort of thing if you're out on the water around Formosa, I'm guessing. They can summon a crab riding wraiths and a kraken. That's the sea sailing equivalent of a nuke.

A wonderful series on a beautiful game. Retro games treated and created with this level of respect deserve all the notice they can get. Everything was perfect from the pixel stippling to the off-tone color, just ideal. I think my only small matter was they didn't explain how they knew about the mermaids and why they captured them. Well, most of all that needed explanation. It seemed unmotivated. But the core aspect, the mystery and detective work, was sheer brilliance. Great series, Oxhorn! Just a question: the glowing thing in the sea is the mermaid. But, if I understand correctly, the Obra Dinn went to the sea in 1802. Then, six months latter, it didn't arrive to the next stop, so it was considered missing. When you board the "ghost ship" it is 1807. That mermaid was following the ship for 5 whole years?
@Hellscrap3r
@Hellscrap3r 5 лет назад

@@alberum8442 That's just me spitballing, but it seems more plausible than anything else. As for the promise and the shell, it appears the mermaid is following the request to the letter. Martin *did* ask her to "see it home," put he only specified the *ship,* not its crew.
@alberum8442
@alberum8442 5 лет назад
@@Hellscrap3r True. Maybe the ship was just sailing randomly without a crew to keep it and the mermaid was trying to guide it, and it took 5 years until she finally managed to put the ship in the correct way. Also, the remaining of the crew basically killed one another, the mermaid was just like "OK, taking the ship anyway".
@EmmaBonn96
@EmmaBonn96 4 года назад
V0IDHE4D Another factor of it being to the letter, the ship didn’t set off in that harbor This is where they stocked up This is where chapter 1 occurred The mermaid may not have known the true port of origin, but the shells seem to have some connection to the pocket watch. Which is why they seem to glow so brightly when in the memories.

The story structure of this game is pretty interesting. At first, it looks like a mutiny gone bad, which is perfectly mundane and normal. Then you get Abigail's death in all its glory, at the most dramatic moment and angle to break up any conceptions you had about this being your usual tale of betrayal and mutiny. So you think you're starting to get a read on the disaster... but there seems to be more to it as there is indeed some betrayal and mutiny still happening around the disaster. Well, that apparently isn't all there is to it because you end up getting just a peek through a hole in the wall at another shocking misfortune that befell the vessel that seems unrelated to the first. As you trace back, you finally start to understand the source of the misfortune and, at last, how it truly ended. Had this story been told in order, it would not nearly be so powerful or surprising as it is.

This Playthrough was so unique and I commend you for that. The summation/narration was SO melodramatic which was both entertaining and perfectly fitting for this high seas tale of thrills and misadventure. Still, the real value in this is the explanation of how each conclusion was drawn. So many Let's Plays feature the gamers coming to the same revelations either after educated guesses or brute force name-plugging, but this shows there really are clues and logical evidence behind each identification. So the 2nd detective game nailed to a cross, well done Oxhorn! You've smashed this game out of the ballpark.

What a wondrous achievement this game is! And I can't imagine how much work it took to make. Neither can I imaginge how much work I would need to do to make a video series like this, so really, thanks alot! I've binged them all now, and it's been a pleasure :)

What a great way to tell a story. The fact that the Inspector keeps the Memento Mortis makes me hope for a Sequel.

To be honest I didn't expect much from the game when I first every seen it. I put it off for years, and didn't find it intresting since I was extermely bad at being a detective. But the time I was playing it, which is when Oxhorn started. I immidently started to regret putting it off for so long. Thank you Oxhorn for not only doing LA Noire but for also playing this game and getting me to finish it to its end. Did it on my own, but I didn't even notice all the little details that were there.

Adjusting for inflation, 29,260 GBP in 1807 is worth more than 69.1 million USD in 2019. Likewise, E. Nichols's 100 pound fine is worth more than 236,000 USD

Started watching this game on another channel, didn’t want to wait, found this playlist by random chance. And boy am I glad I did!! This was such an awesome game, and it was portrayed in an awesome way! I’m for sure gonna investigate this channel more! Hopefully I won’t have to use my own Memento Mortem to do so. ;P

You know I still wonder if I was the only one who thought that Evans sent his own hand so the inspector could meet the man in a sense before opening the pocket watch and it being the monkey's I'm just saying it would've been kind of cool if the way the last chapter worked was that Evans sent you a piece of his own body and then the monkey's hand was somewhere in the room where he died but there's probably something questionable about sending someone your severed finger or something

I was expecting a bad ending for the protagonist. Seeing as the last clue was a LITERAL monkey's paw.
