- Composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto -
Our cover of the Atmospheric titular Main Theme iteration that played during the credits of the Academy Award nominated film, The Revenant, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.
I enjoyed the movie well enough, but when the screen went black at the end and this song began to play, I instantly fell in love. This piece was the bittersweet victory that the entire film had been waiting for. The way composers Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto took the main theme prevalent throughout the picture, with its ambient sweeping strings and distant, impersonal feel, and stripped that same familiar motif down to only two interments, portrayed front and centre, is haunting. The arrangement consisting of two chords, then silence, repeating through the piece until the eventual still dissonant resolve, elicits a contemplative and conflicting feel that portrays the protagonist's psyche to the listener remarkably.
I arranged this cover by ear, as there is currently no sheet music for the score readily available. It took longer than expected to decipher what irregular chords the piano was playing, due to its intentionally "muddied" tone with low velocity and high reverb. I was undoubtably overjoyed when just one of the chords would finally reveal themselves to me.
My brother is playing his electric violin through an EHX Micro POG, TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb, and Way Huge Saucy Box Overdrive, with it and the piano both recording into Logic Pro X.
We're pretty pleased with this one, and we hope you enjoy listening and much as we did learning!
