its just a nit pick and i to can find some flaws with every single headset out there but the worst part with all vr headset is there lcd diplays cos they cant project black and is the worse thing for me and they are way to overpriced plus u need high end pc to even get the most out of those headsets. and its all about getting use to it and soon u forget most of the negatives but i cant deal with grey dark screens in quest like lcd base headsets
This feels wrong. Why can't Microsoft just keep legacy drivers/software in Windows for people to continue using their vr headsets that are expensive, like reverb g2. Even meta allows you to still run rift headsets via their pc meta software.
I mean, the deprecation of WMR almost feels illegal tbh. Especially since the Reverb G2v2 was sold until 2022. I understand that it is hard to support the WMR Portal since that part of the software is highly integrated with OS features. HOWEVER, how difficult would it be to make some adjustments to the software? Like removing the "portal" altogether while keeping the 2D software as a downloadable "driver" and "settings tool" (with core features like "room boundaries" and "floor adjustment"). That would basically solve Microsoft's VR vision of "giving up without even trying" 😜while at the same time offer some kind of legacy support for WMR even in Windows 11. The difference would be that there's no OS-level integration with WMR Portal, and instead you would start VR software from the desktop, or make the software auto-boot SteamVR (which is currently a feature).
This is the reason as i switch from xbox to ps5 and i won’t buy msfs2024. I bought ms2020 full déuxe seceral years ago but this time they won’t get my money. My wmr samsung odyssey works very well on w10 and msfs2020. I don’t accept this decision to not support my headset in w11 and next msfs. I can not support them too. Windows out, microsoft out, xbox out.
This is why All PC headsets need native Steam VR drivers. At least as an option. These proprietary middleman software and/or digital stores have been trouble from day one. No one asked for them and no one wants them. Tech is great but many people and/or companies are not. Things like this are just going to happen more and more. This is why we can't have nice things.
@@kurousagi1339 Very true! I even paused when trying it. However, I settled on Steam VR because it is the closest platform we have that could be called standard and welcomes all HMDs. Valve seems to truly want VR to succeed and grow. The others want to play King Of The Hill. Viewing all players in their space as Threats instead of Allies. Looking down at their costumers as nothing more than peasants with resources to be extracted. Too Dramatic? Maybe. True? Absolutely!
@@abeidiotnormally old wmr headset are compatible open xr as well. It is all bullshit from microsoft, they just don’t want to support their own hardware and wmr portal to not spend money on a wmr team. I am a retired professional developer. And i think it must be possible to create a new core layer for old wmr with open xr drivers, and separate the core from the portal layer like an application vr desktop. With the source of old wmr portal and no parkinson i would do it, i am confident, but i cannot develop anymore.
I have heard that there are projects dedicated to using windows mixed reality devices like the reverb g2 WITHOUT windows mixed reality so you can continue to use these devices after windows mixed reality is discontinued, but I don't know enough about them yet to point anyone in any particular direction - I would love it if MRTV could do a video on one or more of these projects if they can determine that they work well. thanks!
@@td325ic my system can't run windows 10 (at least not well) due to asymetric cpu scheduling (and I wouldn't want to run an old version of windows anyway, that's kind of dumb)) and windows will automatically upgrade to the latest version of itself moving forward. there must be a way to use the wmr hardware without wmr.
@@mixedrealityTVit won’t happen, it is not legal, there could be lawsuits. They can only stops the patch. But i don’t care. Also i keep my hardware incompatible with w11 but it is still very good today. It runs very well msfs2020 in vr high settings with my oled dual 1440x1600 samsung odyssey. The result is as nice than the reecent headsets. People would be surprised to see how good it runs with WMR on an oled vr headset. The 4 millions pixel are good enough with the special pixel structure. I don’t see the pixels really. It’s like an old crt pixel structure very very fine. It makes the scene more natural in fact. Microsoft is a piece of shit company which don’t support their own product. Don’t buy any of their hardware !!!!
The g2 is not dead at all 🤷♂️ its working perfectly fine for me in windows 10 and will continue to till at least 2026 Why are RU-vidrs keep on trying to tell us to get the next best headset they all have flaws and are over priced Not everyone gets a free shiny vr headset when it comes out to try from the manufacturer we have to pay for them and at them prices no thank you My g2 has never been so sharp with my tweaking and my setup and I’m sure a lot of other people are in the same boat
Hi Paulman, like I said in the video, for Windows 11 latest update it is dead. And as I said in the video (did you actually watch it) you can get around it by using Windows 10! Thanks for watching and engaging with my content! :)
@@mixedrealityTV That is true. It isn't sharper but the edge to edge clarity is nice and OLED wins for me. Overall, I knew there would be a compromise when moving on from the G2 as there is no perfect headset yet. For me the Pimax Light is too big and clumsy and it comes without the upgraded speakers. The Q3 doesn't have display port bandwidth. So I decided to take the cheaper option now and wait for the next generation before getting into serious money.
I watched your review on Reverb G2 and ordered it right after. It served me well these years. Recently I purchased Quest 3 512gb because its big price drop, and there is no going back to Reverb G2 because the lens is just so good! No more hunting for the small clear spot in the middle when putting on the headset. Also Virtual Desktop with VDXR performance jumps up so much with FS 2020 I no longer worry about frame rate in the games.
Thats what Meta tried to do with mandatory facebook login. Microsoft now goes one step further. This video tilts it all the wrong way as if g2 is dead and you should upgrade. Sooooo wrong
Depricating hardware is beyond stupid. I hate Microsoft/HP for depricated my printer. I now got to hate M$ for doing it once again! F win11, Im not upgrading.
It really sucks that Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality platform is coming to an end. It would be a great move if Microsoft made the project open source. This would allow the developer community to continue to evolve and improve the platform, keeping it alive.
I think this would be a good time to bring up the HTC Vive Focus Vision. People are disappointed but this perhaps could be a fantastic replacement from the hp reverb g2 due to the DisplayPort and it can also be wireless pcvr. It’d be nice to be able to pull of all nighters and wireless mobile pcvr with just one headset in my opinion
As a G2 owner since launch I've pre-ordered the Pimax Crystal Super OLED version. And postponing Win11 updates as far as I can since I'm using WIn11 Pro.
I had both the original Reverb and the Reverb G2 for a long time. Loved the lightness and comfort of the G2 vs the Quest 2. Currently using the Quest 3 but upgrading to the Pimax Crystal Light not out of the question. Bigscreen Beyond is more of a problem due to higher cost plus the need to purchase base stations and controllers. I also consider the HTC Vive Focus Vision as a possible upgrade path; anxious to see some reviews of that unit. Very unhappy with Microsoft.
Like Meta tried to screw people with mandatory facebook login (and killing rift) you mean, but European laws stopped them? Nah, never a "Facebook headeset" from sucker...berg. There's allready talks about game devs should not be allowed to drop game support making them unplayable which is fair. Someone (many)!paid for the game and content and should be able to play it. I mean you can still play quake 1, half life 1 and those are WAY older than many games today that drop support...cause they CAN and want people to buy again and again and....
I remember about a year ago you were in Korea or Japan and you tried a headset still in development. You said it was the best you had ever seen till that time, also your cameraman was super enthousiastic about it. The company ceo however, said it wouldn't probably go for sale in Europe. Is there any news on that one, or did I miss that? Thanks Seb!
I certainly wont be upgrading to Windows 11! I love my G2 combined with a bit of essential Fholger CAS sharpening. I've managed to backup (and reinstall) microsoft openxr with uwpbackup. Tried backing up the mixed reality UWP apps, with the intention of loading them into windows 11, but couldn't get it to work. Hopefully someone out there with better knowledge of UWP can get it working.
@@jlepage36 Yes, but that will be quite some time away. I would have replaced my G2 by then. Looking at the crystal light, but I'm still worried about the weight of it compared to the G2, as I play skyrim VR, etc.
I pre-ordered the G2 based on your review back then! Loved the headset, it provided me with the fun sport I needed during covid where all they gyms were closed! Shame on Microsoft to just brick these devices.
As I wrote in various posts on reddit, I won't let go the Reverb G2 'till it works, one way or another. There's simply no substitute for it, and I tried almost everything (and I also use quite regularly both Quest 3 and PSVR2). I never had a single issue with the cable, or with WMR itself, and performance-wise it's far superior to the Quest 3 on the same hardware, with incomparable video quality, due to the DisplayPort signal vs streaming (which is unbearable to me in more graphically complex games, even using WiFi 6E, or Link cable with 960mbit data rate). I'll keep Windows 10 and 11 23H2 locked on my PC with the InControl application, and then I'll use 0patch to receive future security updates after 2025. But in no way am I gonna stop using a headset I love and have spent a lot of money on. Just yesterday I was playing Subside, and, needless to say, it's incredible visually on the G2.
I also have the G2 and the colors and flacks are flawless. Only reason I got it was for space sims, and my color vision is unforgiving accurate. Going to be really difficult finding a replacement.
Didn't this channel get its name from the MR in WMR? I know it got its start covering the original 5 WMR headsets. Sad and frustrating that things ended out this way.
I have done the only reasonable thing as a Reverb G2 owner, I ditched Windows for Manjaro (Linux), due to now having zero trust in Microsoft. I installed Windows 10 on a separate disk to only be used for VR and the HP Reverb G2. I'm riding out this storm until there's a reasonable Linux-compatible headset. My hope lies in Valve's upcoming mythical headset; "Deckard".
@@mixedrealityTV Yeah, me too! But I think it will. Valve has stated several times that they are committed-, and have high confidence in VR technology. So it's probably just a matter of Valve doing their typical QC strategy of "it's done when it is done" ;)
I still can't believe that Microsoft killed off WMR. The fact that they are not willing to maintain even basic functionality for people who own these expensive headsets is really quite ridiculous (and a bad look for them as a company). Especially considering that they keep so many legacy features active and maintained in Windows already. We're also talking about a 3 trillion dollar market cap company here. Keeping a developer or two around to keep WMR maintained at a minimal level certainly wouldn't bankrupt them. I also feel like killing this off was super short sighted on their part, as VR and XR are going to become more and more popular. The next iPhone is coming basically and Microsoft won't be there, again, because they laid off their entire WMR team. This is like when Intel destroyed their entire GPU development department because the CEO at the time claimed that there was no future there, and look where that got them.
The new headset are not in same price range. My samsung odyssey oled which has better black and colors and nice pixel structure cost me around only 400$ CDN. I bet my oled headset is better than crustal and quest in dark scenes. And with 4 millions pixels you get nice msfs2020 in high settings with my gen 1 old ryzen 1800x nvidia 1080ti, 32GB ddr4@3200, samsung nvme 970 evo, asus crosshair 6 hero in full tower with seasonic 1200w. You would be surprised by the quality. Good colors, contrast, good clarity, very fine pixels structure. All the new headset are just hyped. The old samsung wirks great.
I still use the HP reverb G2 Frankenstein's Monster'ed with index controllers, base stations, and trackers. Won't be changing the headset out until something really compelling comes along. The cost at launch was $600 and it still has some of the best visuals and clarity (eyes looking around) of any reasonably priced headset out. I'm actually disappointed that we don't have a truly next gen pc vr headset out yet that made me feel compelled to upgrade.
Bigscreen Beyond headset reminded me of buying a gaming console but it doesn't come with a controller nor required pluggings to play it. All sold separately in different store on top of requirement in owning a special phone to scan your hands in order to buy its controller 🤦♂️
Paying for the crystal and splashing out for comfort mods and decent speakers on top just annoyed me. I bought the globular cluster strap and some upgraded speakers for the psvr2 but it was so much cheaper overall i didn't mind. Also....OLED ftw.
I think PSVR2 should be included here. Ok, it does not have the display quality of the PCL or other more expensive headsets, but it has OLED, larger field of view and the support of Sony (who just realised an update for those doubters). And it was on sale for £350 not so long ago.
@@Jopekos In as far as they are fresnel and not as clear as the others, but the others are much more expensive. If you are looking for something to replace the G2, it's definitely in the running.
@@Jopekos I own the PSVR2 and the reverb g2 and the array of oculus headsets. The PSVR2 is my fav in terms of image quality. I also see the mura that people speak of but to me the oled darks and color vibrancy more than make up for it. The mura doesn’t bother me at all. Just my personal experience though.
upgrading from the reverb g2 v2 😎 used quest 3 128g as low as $450 the quest 3s or PlayStation vr are $400 used quest 2 are flooding the market low af $150
It's crazy, all they needed to do is make an oled and aspheric lense version and it would be the perfect pc vr headset, why has this thing been killed of? I will not stop using mine till we have a viable mid range pc vr display port headset, it's madness we still don't have one, it's all high end only right now
I have the latest update of Windows 11 and used my G2 today with virtual desktop just fine. It launched WMR in the background when I put on the headset as usual.
Win11 is crap, Even from a MSP IT pro perspective it's an absolute POS! Just Try disabling back ground apps in 11 and compare to 10. Open devices and printers from the control panel. 11 is crap stick with 10 or consider linux or waiting for win 12.
Fixed Foveated Rendering does not work like Eye Tracking. It will just assume you are looking straight the whole time and blur the edges around the center.
This sucks! I bought the reverb g2 a couple years ago but didn't have the time to use it with a young family. Recently, I have a bit more time and was going to pick up simming again only to see this news. Can the update be rolled back?
I want to love the PCL, but eyestrain and focus problems even with your nice ipd offset setting tutorial (thank you because it's 80% better with this tutorial), and new lenses... Overall the image is so much better (sharper, much more vivid colors..) no doubt.
It was a great headset, very comfortable, great speakers, controllers OK - better if you had the Samsung controllers like me. As soon as I heard it would lose support I sold mine and got a Quest 3 which I'm very happy with even for PCVR using virtual desktop. RIP Windows Mixed Reality, you were janky AF and your controllers were often not well supported, but you were a cheap and usable way to get into VR!
I have had 2 head sets , the Reverb 1 and now since the G2 got released I have been using it on a daily basis in iRacing and some other sims and games . I am still waiting for that big upgrade , not sure when to act on it , now or wait some more as my G2 is still a great unit for what I use it for. What to do what to do ???
My HP Reverb G2 V2 is a collector’s item. 😉👌 just like my HTC Vive, Vive Pro, Vive Cosmos, Vive Cosmos Elite, Oculus Quest, PSVR, they just sit there looking pretty. 😁👍
The least Microsoft can do is realease a WMR to OpenXR translation layer without the WMR environment. Microsoft is currently selling ditching Windows. I really hope Deckard becomes amazing.
This moment brought to you by HP and Microsoft. Sorry to everyone who paid $800+ for 'the future' of VR. Ever wonder why HP was the only second gen WMR headset? Because Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, and HP saw no sales and very limited support from MS. HP was the only one to put out a gen2 product. Maybe because they saw that they were the last man standing and wanted to capture that market? (Valve, HTC, Oculus were still the big guys though) As an HP Reverb G2 user from the start I felt that HP really wasn't ready with any support and the platform was flawed. The whole USB power issue that lead to multiple versions of cables, the lack of testing on AMD platforms, the pool controllers all had me leaving to Oculus platforms. HP really wasn't ready to support consumer electronics and MS was unwilling to put out their own VR device. They left partners in the cold with the WMR product that really wasn't as good as the competition.
DON'T buy the Crystal Light, I repeat, DON'T DO IT. Pimax messed up the tracking, the original Crystal is much better, and it is such a bad headset compared to Quest 3. YES, the visuals are beautiful BUT everything else is absolutely worse than the Quest 3 and that makes it to be a much worse experience. Tracking is worse, lenses are worse, controllers are worse, passthrough cameras are worse, audio is worse, microphone is worse, design is worse, comfort is worse, LITERALLY EVERYTHING IS WORSE in the Crystal Light. JUST GET A QUEST 3, it is the best recomendation you will get in this comments section.
@@mixedrealityTV Are you kidding me? you are a VR expert, and I really doubt you didn't notice the difference in tracking smoothness and precision of the Quest 3 compared to the Crystal Light. I am not talking about the controllers, which of course give a better tracking, but about the head tracking. The head tracking of the Quest 3 is absolutely smooth, compared to the shaky stuttery head tracking of the Crystal Light. And the lenses? there is a night and day difference there, it doesn't worth to sacrifice everything for extra visuals which you don't enjoy. Crystal Light only works for being seated looking to the horizon, but any game which you move your head, it is just a bad experience. I prefer to play Half Life Alyx on the Quest 3, just going to say that.
I completly agree, the blur from bad tracking is making the Crystal Light unusable. I just received mine few days ago, and tried everything, but still no solution. My head and eyes are hurting so much because of this. I really dont know where is this famous Crystal image??? Its just a big hype, but no quality.
The Crystal isn't super bright it's that the Big Screen Beyond is SO dim. love the form factor but had to return mine it was a huge no go being so dim AND having awful glare. I hope a V2 comes out and fixes these issues I'll order for sure!
It's funny that in the announcement killing the Hololens 2, Microsoft also said they would continue to support Mixed reality and 3rd-parties. I wish someone responded to them directly that that was an outright false statement since they had already announced they were killing 3rd-party support with this update.
such a shame. Both options (crystal light and BSB) are not convincing to me. It feels like BSB needs the V2 of its headset to be considered. Just the fact that scanning the face only happens via iphone app says it all. But one thing which we need to give a credit to BSB is that it pushes a significant milestone when it comes to size and weight. Pimax in contrary feels super bulky and cheap. The visuals might be the best but it doesn't seem like a significant change to what competition offers. So I would rather downgrade to Windows 10 and go through all the workarounds than upgrade to pimax crystal light. Quest is Facebook, so no thank you 😅
My thoughts exactly. iPhone anything, ever? No thank you. Facebook? Not a chance. And then there is Pimax, salivating at the thought of being able to still sell their Crystal and PCL headsets at full price to clean out their warehouse right before they release the Crystal Super, thanks to Microsoft just outright assassinating the still extremely viable and working Reverb G2. Bunch of snakes in the VR industry...
Fortunately I already had replaced G2 w/PCLight which I love for sim racing. Unfortunately I already updated Win 11 so my G2 is now a brick. Reminds me of a time I held on to a stock too long. Pimax is better than G2 for sim racing for sure. Agree with others this is just wrong of MS to do this. What’s their motivation?
Sebastian, thank you as always for your videos, but I need your review and comparison of the Somnium VR1 with the Crystal. Why don't you talk about it? Why don't you have it? I need your last word before I order it!
There is an initiative to stop games from dying, especially in server support. When support is dropped software should be opensourced as a matter of law!!!
Can anyone confirm Windows 10 is working with G2? Will try to install it into a seperate partition just for VR purposes.

Windows 10 still works with the Reverb G2. I am dual booting Windows 10 and Linux. In an article on UploadVR titled 'Microsoft Explains What Will Happen To Windows Mixed Reality Headsets' from 21 december 2023 a Microsoft company representative is quoted saying: "As of Nov. 1, 2026 for consumers and Nov. 1, 2027 for commercial customers, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer be available for download via the Mixed Reality Portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and Steam VR beta, and we will discontinue support. [...] Existing Windows Mixed Reality devices will continue to work with Steam until users upgrade to a version of Windows that does not include Windows Mixed Reality."
I’m blocking the update until there is a worthy upgrade. The Pimax is just way too bulky and the Bigscreen requires lighthouses. G2 owners should sign the Change Org petition campaigning for Microsoft to open-source the WMR code (can’t link as it gets deleted). Additionally, the Monado project is intending to make an OpenXR driver release for Windows. So this is still some hope.
@@mixedrealityTV I agree I tried the PSVR2 I found the picture was not good enough for Sim racing everything in the distance is blurry. I have ordered the crystal light really looking forward it it.
PSVR2 at 150% super sampling is sharp in simracing (4200x4200). Of course you miss clarity of higher res headsets like my bsb, but PSVR2 is more comfortable to wear, is light, doesnt get hot and screen doesnt give off heat to the eyes (ehm bsb).
@@Racingfan101 Nothing I could do would make it as clear as the Reverb G2, for me the comfort of the PSVR2 was the worst could be my head shape but it would dig into my forehead when the sweet spot was in the right place. Well I have only Windows 10 and use my Quest 3 for SIM racing gaming. Time shall Tell what Microsoft even does with Windows 10 systems. I think support ends in 2026, so see what happens then. I do have the HP Reverb G2 and Odesey +, but I have retired then a long time ago. My main reason was the sweet spots on these devices were terrible. Time shall Tell the future and usage of various VR headsets. Microsoft does not care about VR users. Disgusting.
F microsoft. Microsoft out, xbox out. I won’t accept the abandon of WMR. I already switch to ps5. And i won’t support Msfs anymore. I bought the full deluxe msfs2020, which still running well with my wmr samsung odyssey oled vr headset. But now it’s FINISHED. Out. NO w11, 12 or 299, no xbox, no fs2024…bye. FY microsoft
@@saltkringel2 WMR was a boat anchor around the G2's neck. If they got rid of WMR, used OLEDs, Quest 3 quality lenses, controllers, and tracking on a Reverb G3 it could be an incredible HMD -- probably better than Pimax Crystal.
I flocked to the G2 WMR because it was believed to be a more PC centric platform and this is how Microsoft do me? This is a god damn betrayal. The options you presented are nothing like the G2!:I could be done with VR after this.
