The problem with translucent that it won't be translucent for long due to scratches, dust, abrasions, etc. Unless it's some new super high tech new polymer that is 100% scratch resistent, I would steer clear of the clear top!
The mk8 isn't just a keyboard. It's a work of art based on a timeless tradition of electric pianos. I know that because we are all listening to this through youtube's compression, we are not hearing what YOU heard there at the Rhodes factory, but still, it sounds incredibly WARM and FAT!!!! There's nothing else like this. Truly something special in it's own category. I'd go with the clear transparent top with the woodgrain bottom.
Agreed on all points. .. except wondering if there could be a smoke transparent top, a bit darker than the one we see here. Maybe. Then by adding lights inside you could choose seeing the inside more or less... 😊
This is a sacred place: maximum respect to the whole Rhodes team for the infinite love you put into it and for your daily commitment. Thank you Doctor for showing us how they create magic
This whole video had me smiling. I have an old Mark I that I'm currently restoring and it makes me so happy to see that the love for these instruments will continue into future generations.
Good luck on your MK1! I hope you'll finish yours, unlike mine lol. Couldn't get the upper octaves to make good sustain, eventually I sold it to a EP repair man so it can have the glorious life again that it deserves.
I restored one of those! I had such an amazing time doing it and the final results were amazing! Ended up selling it for twice the price I got it + the restoration price. Such an amazing instrument.
Im a 21 year old that will one day own one of these works of art once I finally land a well paying/stable job. Electric pianos are not dying any time soon
It's great to see that this instrument wasn't left for dead. It really feels like something that would've been forgotten about, with the only ones still around from the 60's. I'm glad to see that's not the case.
I grew up during the Rhodes Era. It's nice to know someone manufacturers this with extreme quality control, assurance and attention to detail. Keep the best of the past while moving forward. MK 8 gets the job done. Thank you Dr mix and the Uk Rhodes factory for keeping the beauty going. I pick the red one. 🇺🇸
Boy! I wish Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, & George Duke were here to witness this! This is EPIC! I’m sure they’re smiling. May they R.I.P. They were the Rhodes Scholars!😌🎹🎶🙏🏾🕊👍🏾
I think this is my first ever RU-vid comment, after years of watching. I just felt compelled to wish Dan every success with this venture and give him a big thumbs up for all his help and support he’s offered Rhodes players. He’s gone above and beyond many times with my instruments, often for no fee. He’s an example of what you can do if you stay with it and work hard. Great to see someone’s passion become a business, particularly as it means the Rhodes legacy lives on. If anyone wants a Rhodes, I reckon you’re in the safest place to buy one. Thanks Dan. Rod 😀
I was a keyboard tech for 36 years and rebuilt many Rhodes pianos. On one of my own Rhodes I installed a built-in stereo chorus. I am very impressed by all the electronics you managed to find room for inside the unit.
The various looks in your eyes says it al!! I was a proud owner of the Mark 1 Suitcase back in 1979- this is the next logical step for Dr. Dean. Love your channel my man, and you helped pull me through the pandemic AND BEYOND. I am a dentist/musician (Jawn of the Dead) from Philadelphia, PA, and needed your positivity to pull me through one of the craziest times in any healthcare provider's life. Peace Claudio and can't wait to hear the new Rhodes Mark 8.
I think you should get the translucent lid. It would look so good in your videos. Beeing able to see all the mechanics while you are playing. Really cool!
I just love the fact that they're using the LAB L5 amp made by Moog/Gibson in the 1970's for showcasing the 2021 Rhodes. They still are super great amps - "would be neat to restore the two I have".
Completely blown my mind this Has to be the best video I have ever seen of yours to date your love for the Rhodes is so infectious. That Mark 8 sounded like butter and silk mixed with a ton of cream!!
the sound was so alive and funky. the nuances in the sound and the transients are all just screaming funky jazz. is it just me or is there something purple about the sound of the Rhodes. like a healing transmuting violet flame. love this instrument and all it represents.
I'd get a red one. Great to see a quality product being manufactured in the UK - looks and sounds amazing. I like this kind of thing that does one specific sound really well, rather than a million digital emulations that sort of sound a bit like the original if you squint a bit.
I agree with red and black being the obvious choice, but think the transparent and wood version with red internal under lighting could be worth considering 🤔 ..as a life choice I see the red one.
Love the sound of this piano.... So many amazing songs produced on this timeless classic... Just went onto their website and designed my own, only £8,900... Mrs said, 'I thought it would be a lot more than that'.... Errrr..... Hello.... birthday's not far away...
I have to agree with the options that others have already said... you pick the base and legs, BUT, to cover up that workmanship is nothing short of a crime. You MUST have the clear smoked top!!! Shame they don't have a red base option or red front panel for you Claudio. Thanks for the tour!
You NEED the red and black one, anything else won't work, and that's that! 😁👍 That is SUCH a amazing instrument, I wish I had like 10-15 of them! **Cough** 😏 Can't wait to see you using yours in your studio, and I hope you do a live jam session when you get it! 😛
I don't know why... but I never realized that for Rhodes... "Electric Piano" actually meant they built a portable piano that's electrified in the same way as how an Electric Guitar is an electrified guitar... I guess part of it is that I haven't really had a chance to see the guts of one in person and never really touched one myself. Like with Adam Savage on Tested. It's just so fun to get the seconhand excitement of following someone who genuinely is excited to be seeing and touch what he is seeing and touching... and hearing.
Congrats. So funny to constantly have to correct people when they call it "an electronic piano" and you have to tell them "Electric! Not electronic." Duuuuuh, I don't see a difference. Your explanation......sort of, but not really. Your synopsis is more fitting to the Yamaha Electric grand. That's an actual portable grand piano that then uses something similar to guitar pickups to take the vibrations out for amplification. Yes the Rhodes uses something similar to guitar pickups, but from there on out it's different than a piano. Principally because instead of piano strings, the Rhodes uses little tuning forks (rods, actually), and that gives it the distinctive sound, totally different than a piano. Also the hammers are rubber rather than felt, and the action is plastic rather than wood, and the escapement mechanism is simpler than in a piano, I'm not sure why they can get away with that.
@@TheLarryBrown To the Philistines like me. The distincion between using strings versus rods goes beyond my classifications. I'm thinking more broadly that I never thought that there was a giant mechanical source to the sounds. When all the competitors I've heard have been emulating the Electric Piano withpurely synth tech from the start. Oh and also. If it gets the sound the users want. I see no reason why using rods instead of strings would be an issue to "get away with". :)
@@jmalmstenI meant "get away with" a simpler escapement mechanism. As far as "getting the sound the user wants," I think that was a big stroke of luck rather than design. Harold Rhodes wanted something that would stay in tune in spite of a lot of knocking about, and he came up with the rods (they're actually called tines...I don't know why.) I don't know if he envisioned allowing in the field tuning or not, the final product was a little spring on each rod that can be adjusted for tuning. The Wurlitzer Electric piano is way difficult to tune, you have to either solder on extra mass or else use a file to file mass off. It just so happened that the tines gave off a beautiful sound that conquered the world, but I don't think Harold chose them for that reason nor realized how profound that sound woukd become. The Rhodes sound is similar to the "celeste" used in "The dance of the sugarplum faires" in "The Nutcracker Suite." Let me go look up how that works..... Eh...seems more like a xylophone bar.
Awesome! I would suggest all options black plus a red hood and a silver stand. Pure Dr. Mix Style! Personally, I would go for the transparent Hood, Walnut Case, Silver Front panel with Black Preamp & FX-Panels on a silver stand! 😄
As a pure music head over over many years, the sound of the Rhodes has warmed, swarmed the inner me, healed my soul when weary, like a voice of an angel would. What a beautiful keyboard that has helped create genre's and shaped the world of music and history. One of the most beautiful sounds known to the human ear, heart and soul. Great review.
Ho lavorato 20 anni in Generalmusic (Gem/Lem/Ahlborn). Ero music engineer e creavo i suoni delle varie tastiere e organi classici per poi essere anche dimostratore alle fiere. In questa azienda ho visto la stessa passione che avevamo noi, un mondo bellissimo. Un abbraccio a tutti.
This is the kind of sponsored content I really enjoy. Thanks to Rhodes for sponsoring this episode and allowing such a deep insight into their production. This instrument is truly amazing.
Today in instruments I will probably never be able to afford… but man, what a great keyboard. I am sure you will enjoy yours. Just to make sure you read the comments and do what you viewers say, I would say that you should get a pink one😀.
Man, this video is awesome . Doctor Mix really geeks out over his Rhodes which I totally understand. Can anyone get a factory tour like he did or no ? As for the price ……..I don’t think it is out of line. This is not just a musical instrument . This is a work of art, a piece of musical history, a handmade masterpiece, a conversation starter, a showpiece to any music room or man cave. Yes you can get a quality Rhodes sound from a virtual instrument. However, nothing can replace the tactical feeling of producing sound via a mechanical instrument as well as the feelings inside of you while doing so . There are many different instruments of all kinds that cost even more than this. To the people that understand what this mock eight is the price as well worth
Um....I wouldn't care what color it is. If I could get my fingers on one as an owner, I'd be happy. Brother you got a real treat. I'm a huge fan of people who are craftsman (or women). People who create things with their hands. These people are artist. Outstanding experience.
So happy (and maybe jealous ) to see the excitement of a person getting one, congrats! What a nice sound! As for the colour, if you like red (and Ray Manzarek, cause it combines his setup 😂) then I would say red hood, black bottom and panel, silver amp-fx panel. Otherwise a warm gray hood ,black bottom and silver panels (like a bass rhodes) would be a nice choice . If I had to confuse you more, I would say a golden hood, black panels and wooden bottom 😁 . 🍻
Amazing… the workmanship, attention to detail, and the signal path ( low noise floor ). Marrying up the Rhodes sound with Steinway action is taking it to another level. 💥👍🏻😃🌟
Saw a video of Farfisa Factory long time before. More than a thousand workers in that assembly section alone. All those are gone. Good to see Rhodes MK 8 is being built now. There are many old products like this needs revival. Regards.
There are emulations that can sound almost as good, just like for pianos, but there is nothing more inspiring than feeling those keys and the hammer action - I would say that's the real benefit of getting the real hardware. This one is on the list for when I get the proper studio room. I vote for transparent and wood - just like opening a grand piano lid.. it's nice to see the hammers going up and down.
Man, what an amazing instrument. Loved seeing the factory and the process of building this. I have to say, I do not understand how changing the paint jobs of the stand and case made the price jump up by £3,000. Seems a little excessive for just the asthetic of the instrument - but then again I'm never going to be able to pick one of these up so why bother complaining.
Walnut case, with a black cover!😄 WhaAAAAtttt???? I paused and wrote the above comment. Then, you went to the online design page and selected it!!!! Yes!!! Walnut case with a black cover!😁👍👌
Once again a great video, but you guys drive on the wrong side of the road!! Great piano!! Black frame and red cover is my first but the wood with black is classic!! Their are all fantastic!!
I placed my order a few weeks ago .. This is a labour of love manufacturing of a beauty of a keyboard. This is NOT a Yamaha, NOT a Roland ..etc this is a RHODES .. Thanks Dan and the team for this amazing experience and cannot wait to see my baby one day
This is insanly cool, but I'm not quite shure, if I would like it in person. The wobbely feel and slight detune seem to be a big part of a rhodes to me - At least for my mk2, compared to a sampler. A Version with a very slight and randomized detuning mitght be a nice option. They should also think about adding a stereo chorus (e.g. dimension d) and producing the effects panels and amp as retrofit for mk1 and mk2 models, since those seem to be cool and it would turn down manufacturing cost.
Even though I own a fully reconditioned 1974 Mk I Stage (which I did about 10 years ago after beating my beast for decades), I now take my NORD Electro 6HP to gigs, and I find that it is reasonable satisfying (saving both my back and wear and tear on my Rhodes). I have all eight of the Rhodes sampled voices installed and some very nice effects (although sometimes I take my stomp-box board with me just so I can have the Roland CE-1 chorus!)
Wowwww... this is amazing. I have a mark 2 but now I want one of these. When you consider the price of a new NS3 is €3,500 then this isn’t too unrealistic a price band for the quality of workmanship going into each one. I think black with silver front rail, black control panel and violet top looks sweet.
Wow! this is a product made with love, and guess who fell in love with it? I would go for the walnut with clear lid and the black fascia. That clear plastic which makes the inside visible is sick.
Holy moly $9450 is super steep especially during these troubling times. While it does look like a fine instrument and i do understand it’s hand made in small quantities, it’s hard to swallow it costing more that a moog one lol.
If I ever win the lottery owning a fully loaded The Rhodes Mk8 Piano "Red and Black" with Silver effects! All I could think of was all my Favorite Steely Dan songs! Red Top black Bottom "Doc" with Silver effects. Congrats on your new baby! ;)
wait no nevermind get the translucent to show off the inside. for people who dont know what a rhodes piano is, they might just asume its just some electric piano. show them whos boss
I can relate to your excitement in this video. It's like being a kid in a toy store! I love trains and I remember visiting a railroad with old steam Locomotives and I was fuming with excitement like you were in this video. Btw these instruments sound absolutely beautiful. Perfect for study music instrumentals.
It's a joy watching your love and passion for these amazing devices. I wonder if there's anybody else on the planet who respects and reveres these at the same level? I'd love to hear more technical details about how the spikes interact with the "tuning forks" (do they behave together like the mutually vibrating strings on a piano to give interesting decay effects?), how the pickups work (a single one per note or multiple ones like on a guitar?), what their chorus and other effects are actually doing, and so forth. As for color, I'm torn between the translucent for showing off the action and the red because, you know: red.
An instrument for the super rich. Beautiful work no doubt, but not sure how the business can sustain itself considering you can build a great home studio for the cost of one of these.
well, its for rhodes enthusiasts. if you want a rhodes and pay less, you can get a mark II for 2/3 thousand dollars. I would get this one though if I could
I mean, you can get an old stand up piano basically for free when people chuck them out. Or you can get a Steinway for 150k, and Steinway sustains themselves just fine. For a handcrafted, meticulously measured instrument that must have taken hours upon hours to design and build, I don't think the price is unreasonable at all. Stuff costs money, fine stuff costs even more money.
@@VinceRiviera I have no argument with the cost. It's a beautiful piece, a dream come true for those of us who haul or in my case, used to haul a Rhodes around and had to deal with all the problems the original had. I'm sure you are right that for the hours of research and development, the construction and marketing, 10k American dollars is reasonable for those willing to pay it. My point though is does the market exist for such an instrument? If everyone working in that factory in Leeds can earn a living then that's great. But as you saw, so far they have made 12 and the company has been around a little while. I sincerely hope they succeed. The world is a better place when you can actually purchase a new Rhodes. Btw, new tine electric pianos have been manufactured by a US company for quite some time, they just can't legally call it a Rhodes.
Helllllooooo Claudio!!! Great vlog my friend. Great to see you so excited for the MK8. You can see the love and appreciation for the skill that goes into making such amazing instruments.
Black and red and the white lookin´ Panel looks a bit like Kraftwerk "Die Menschmaschine" :-) & i´m very impressed of this guy who´s working there! Incredible. I´m not a keyboard player, but this is many years old magic in a new instrument!
