The Ridiculous Drama Over 'The Simpsons' Episode "Bart vs. Australia"

Over the years, ‘The Simpsons’ have made a name for themselves for insulting a variety of countries and cultures with intentionally one dimensional stereotypes. First, there were one off characters. Then, for the 16th episode of the 6th season, the show took on an entire country, with the episode, “Bart vs. Australia”.
In the episode, the Simpsons travel down under, so Bart can apologise over a joke call that soon becomes an international incident. The episode first aired in the US in February 1995, then soon after in Australia. And, after the country at the centre of the story saw how they and their culture were represented, there was an immediate backlash.
Despite all the stereotypes that had appeared in ‘The Simpsons’, they were never intended to be malicious, as the show lightheartedly poked fun at the very idea of stereotypes and the ignorance of people who’d take them seriously. Still, even with the obvious and perfectly executed sarcasm and satire that you’d expect from a golden era episode of ‘The Simpsons’, a large number of Australians took the bait and were deeply offended by the show’s clearly intentionally inaccurate parody tribute to their country.

As an Australian, the only part of this episode that offends me is the notion that Aussies drink Foster's, let alone _only_ drink Foster's; seriously, I've been in liquor stores in various parts of the country, and I've yet to find a place that even sells it. Other than that, it's a definitive Classic Simpsons escapade, and certainly my favourite travel episode!

When the episode came out that was all my grandfather drank so I just assumed it was accurate 🤷🏻‍♀️ but now, yeah never seen a person drink it since

I went in a truck stop bar in the outback, I bought a beer (can't remember which) and the locals started questioning why I wasn't drinking fosters. I pointed out I can buy that in England. It does seem popular in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, most bottleo's sell Foster's, but one has to look really hard to find them. Also, none would be crazy enough to advertise that fact, I haven't seen a Foster's ad or advertising material in AU since the 80s

It's the only Australian beer we get in the US especially in 1995, I've never seen a VB or Coopers for sale in a store. Americans especially in a pre internet era would just assume that it was the most popular beer in Australia. It's kind of like how a lot of Americans would assume Corona is the most popular beer in Mexico because its huge in the United States and they market it like crazy to Americans, but when you go to Mexico it's like the 3rd or 4th most popular beer.

For context, there was a big obsession here in Australia at the time in regard to how we were seen internationally, particularly by the US. A lot of Australians at the time saw America as our stronger, cooler older brother and the TV networks here would always make a big deal if an American show depicted Australia or Australians in any way, even if it amounted to just five seconds of a character with a fake Australian accent. So, there was always going to be a negative reaction when a hugely popular comedy show from the States does an episode about Australia, everyone gets hyped up, and it portrays us as a bunch of uneducated, backwards rednecks. I guess a number of Australians were disappointed that it made fun of us for how others saw us rather than for how we actually were at the time, but I imagine that would have required a bit more research. That said, I don't think as many Australians are complaining about the episode these days, and most enjoy it for what it is.

Hear hear. Australia Inc was huge at the time and we had only just started realising how much we had turned towards Asia. Being generous with the video I think it suffers from much of what the episode does. Like where are the facts? The only offence that ever arose out of the episode from my recollection was when non-Australian viewers would repeat parts of it to us as though it was something of ours. The video would be a lot stronger if it made reference to actual examples of supposed outrage. All in all, the depiction of Australia is a cypher for America and patriotism more generally (as noted in the video). The majority of the jokes are aimed at the incomprehensibility of another people even if a language is supposedly shared. On those levels it works.

I remember this event well. It wasn't that big a deal. Sure, some in the media complained, but as fans att we saw its funny side, never took it too seriously & as expected it blew over pretty quickly & never had any lasting effects on how Aussies saw the Simmo's

@@Walshyyy420 maybe not post-9/11 and definitely not these days, but I can guarantee there were a lot of people around the time this episode was made who thought that America was the epitome of coolness. The only ones who disagreed tended to be from the boomer crowd (usually British immigrants from the 1950s and 60s) who complained about our loss of "traditional" (i.e. British) values.
@ftc3000
@ftc3000 9 месяцев назад
@@AA-ch7yw these days there's probably more awareness of each other's cultures, but in the days before the internet became popular most Australians and Americans only really knew each other through cultural exports like movies and TV shows.

I remember seeing the episode when it dropped here in Australia, I honestly think the issue wasn't with Australia's failing to recognise that the episode was satire but rather that Americans would take the portrayal as serious. Leading up to that we had already experienced many strange misunderstandings that had been burnt into the American subconscious like the "shrimp" thing

12:40 I would like to point out that in 2009 F1 limited Australian race fans at the Australian grand prix to 24 beers on race day and their was outrage over this rule... 24 beers during a 2 hour race, 12 beers per hour, 6 beers per 30 minutes, 1 beer every 5 minutes... This was considered outrageous.

Bob Hawke was widely loved & well regarded by most Aussies from all sides. He was intelligent but down to earth, straight shooter & a sweet talker a quintessential everyman. In AU, he was well known for a "world record" achieved at Oxford University for a beer scull of a yard of ale in 11 seconds. The record is widely regarded as having been important to his career and his beloved ocker image. He gave up alcohol in 1980 before entering parliament & went on to become, in my humble opinion, Au's greatest PM.

When it first aired in the 90s, Channel 10 promoted the Australian aspect of the episode quite heavily. There was a lot of hype behind this episode, so when the cultural commentators of the day got up in arms with the usual “that’s not us!!!!” calls, it was amplified a lot more than it should of been. It was really a satire (and quite a clever one, too) of how Australia in the 1980s and 1990s marketed itself to the US.

I like the episode and it is a funny one, though 'getting everything wrong on purpose' does seem like an excuse. I suppose it (the episode)was primarily for people that didn't know much about Australia anyway (Americans), but I can see how such a willfully ignorant way of doing things may have irritated some and could be seen as evidence of an unfortunate American attitude that any culture outside their own borders is unworthy of learning about-Either for the writers of the show or the wider populace. Broad and innacurate jokes aimed at an (assumed to be) ignorant audience with writing that shows contempt for both the subject material and those that are to consume said material. That said, 'knifey spoony' is pretty great :)

Thank you for this. Lovely stuff. Australia offended? As if. Ozzies don't give a flying f**k. I honestly admire Australians for being more chill than the Brits. I reckon the North American attempts at an Australian Accent were considered a joke about America. Dick Van Dyke set a very low bar with his Dodgy Cockney shenanigans. I did like this Simpsons episode. Just as I did the Simpsons episode with Tony Blargh. It felt like North America has no idea what the rest of the world is like and That was the gag all along.
