This is the classic 1983 adaptation of Tom Wolfe's 1979 book of the same name.
Chronicling the exciting early years of the United States' race to conquer the final frontier, and the daredevil test pilots who ultimately became the first Americans in space, "The Right Stuff" begins as America is pondering its future and looking to the skies. And intrepid test pilot Chuck Yeager (Shepard) and the seven pioneering astronauts of the Project Mercury space program are the ones the country looks to. Kaufman scripts and directs, pushing the envelope with a filmmaking bravado that matches this soaring story of training, heroism, and of sudden fame for which there is no training.
