Just before the last major economic meltdown I left my job. When I was ready to go back to work... the world was a mess and NOBODY was hiring. When I eventually got some interviews I was asked about the gap. I explained what I'd been doing in the interim. In my case I was doing freelance jobs primarily writing grant proposals. Of course that dried up when the bottom fell out. I think it's useful to explain that you left for another opportunity whether that's working on new projects, building skills, accomplishing something (travel, learning, creating) you couldn't otherwise do. I think your gap has to 'make sense' to the interviewer.

This is great info, I am always uncomfortable just talking about why I am even looking to leave a job.

Employers should not be asking this question in the first place. Cut them off and ask them to stay focused on asking questions that will demonstrate your ability to perform the requirements of the job. Mathew McConaughey took time off to recalibrate his life, Tom Brady came out of retirement, and "musicians" work until they die, in between breaks. Not too sure why people look at this as a negative. It's actually beneficial to the employer. I think people are jealous to be honest.
