Ben Makarechian, Brian Underwood, and Max Ptacek tell the story of their experiences trying to create a virtual reality dodgeball game with little knowledge of computer code. They share the methods they used to teach themselves coding so students around the world can learn
on their own.
Brian Underwood is currently an 8th grader at Hillbrook School. He has always had an interest in science, technology and coding, and has become even more interested with the releases of virtual reality headsets. In his TEDx Talk, he and his friends talk about empowering students through coding and what schools could do better to inspire kids to code. In his free time, Brian enjoys programming, water polo, and hanging out with his friends.
Max Ptacek is an 8th grader at Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, California. He loves all things technological and mechanical, and he has always loved the concept of VR. His passion for video games led him to join his friends in creating their own game. In his talk, he and his friends will talk about empowering kids through code, how schools are teaching kids coding wrong, and how that can be fixed. He hopes he can inspire children and adults alike to try their hand at coding.
Ben Makarechian is an 8th grade student at Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, California. For the last two years, his passions have been playing sports, exercising, and computer programming. In his talk with Brian Underwood and Max Ptacek, he describes how his own experiences with programming were enhanced by connecting it to his passions. He and his group also outline how they hope others can enjoy learning to code by connecting projects to an existing passion.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This was indeed the Nerdiest presentation their body movements and all but indeed they are talking something awesome. Loved it. Wish I had access to coding at an early age. Motivated again.

@Gabfigueiredo

@@thecompilations8559 Start from what is your purpose with coding and what you looking forward to achieve from it. If you want to simply start coding a game of your own to have some fun, I would strongly recommended taking a look at Godot engine and C, C# and python language, really don't matter what is the context you start from as you will find yourself learning how to do propper research to look for what you need to fullfill your goals and how to code and interpret it for your own first projects.

I agree with them saying that schools teach programming incorrectly, if at all. Which is sad because computers are such a big part of our lives.

Completely agree with what you say about teaching code to kids. I first learnt to code by following a tutorial on RU-vid to create snake. This then really gave me the knowledge and accessablity to more code. I recently wrote my first neural network on image recognition without any help apart from the internet.

*Very inspirational story* I agree that the students should be left unless extremely stuck, when I was being taught programming my teacher done just that and it made us all better at problem solving and coding alike.

Your goal is good, but your story is weak, when i was 15 and never heard of anything other than html, no one in my school knows anything about computers not teacher and not students, in 3 months i managed to finish a 3d game with 0 support and i worked minimum 9 hours a day, the result was so horrible that it killed my friend's pc and he had to buy another one, but the problems you described are nothing to be honest compared to what i had when i started, though I encourage you to stand on a similar platform and speak again.
@brianunderwood93
@brianunderwood93 6 лет назад
yeah I agree m8, it was just that with the time frame, and speech edits that we were given, we could not include every detail. Trust me, it was a lot longer and more tiring than that. Probably not as tough as yours though, so hats off to you.
