Warning ⚠️ Please keep in mind ( I know I have to) is that you have to process this thru your own mind. You cannot think because you’ve watched something passively ( and in the moment, got it) means you understand and are able to apply

this can be said for all subjects, most people get it then forget and then has to be relearned again

I'm definitely one of those people who "just gets" chemistry. Mostly thanks to Crash Course chemistry on YT with Hank Green. Those videos laid the fundamentals for me and I've never struggled excessively with the subject since then.

I agree that doing mind maps helps with retention. But not by that much if you look at Bloom’s taxonomy. In my opinion, it is better if you can apply it (do past papers), evaluate (mark your friends script) and create (apply it in a project, or to explain phenomena around you)
@copium392
@copium392 2 года назад
Past Papers are not ALWAYS consistent. There are better ways of doing it. Your entire understanding of Bloom's Taxonomy seems wrong. Evaluation is NOT just giving out marks. And creation is definately NOT application of information to project or homework. It's not as easy as you make it seem.
@TheCsePower
@TheCsePower 2 года назад
@@copium392 Yea, I agree. I don’t understand it at all and how it’s classified. Actually it seems that no one online agrees on what each stage consists of. I would love to see a website or resource that gives examples for each stage instead of just using verbs. From my understanding, the difference between creating and applying is that creating is open-ended with many solutions, and apply has one or few expected answers. i.e. APPLY: what is 1+1? CREATE: how would you add up numbers to make a sum of 10?

The thing is, I'm able to see the trends and map out a pattern in the content I'm studying, but I can never really translate that pattern well in terms of a mindmap or my notes in general. There's a mental block between how the pattern is laid out in my head, and how I pen it down - the physical notes I write never reflect how my brain works, which in turn makes it hard for me to read my notes afterwards. I don't really know how to fix this issue :/
@TBC1599
@TBC1599 2 года назад
Maybe one way to get over this is to not look at your notes while drawing parts of the mind map. Read, process the information, then map it out on paper from memory. This will force you to rely on your own mental schema rather than that of the source material.
@americanhero8606
@americanhero8606 2 года назад
Maybe write out the patterns you see in your own words, then think about that description for a few moments and "doodle" different ways of mapping out or diagramming those patterns.

Hey Justin, how should I take notes during a lecture? I'm a literature student and often do I feel the pressure to remember a gigantic corpus of information. If I write it down, I feel good since I can reaccess it anytime. However, I have come to learn it isn't a productive habit. Is note taking during lectures all bad or is there a way I can comfort myself that I've not missed anything important and also didn't lose focus in the lecture by writing notes unnecessarily. My second question is, how do I maximize cognitive load to improve my writing-independent learning?

Hey Dr. justin! Thanks for all your tips in learning! You've changed the way I take notes in my lectures and study concepts. I have a question, just as an idea. I'm also studying besides my career, a foreign language. The main issue seems to be that to learn lots of vocabulary I either have to do SRS or read and look up words in dictionary. It's very time consuming and, as you said, SRS stacks up and becomes hard to sustain. Do you have any ideas on how to apply your concepts of cognitive load, mind maps and chunking in the context of bloom's and Solo's taxonomy for foreign langauge vocabulary, so we can increase retention without thousands of SRS? Thanks for you wisdom Dr.

I think the best way to apply this to language is to study at a higher level. Instead of memorizing lists of vocabulary, write an essay in the language about the themes covered in the chapter you are currently studying in your textbook. For example, if the chapter focuses on travel, write an essay about an imaginary trip to a country where the language is spoken. When you need a word, just look for it in the vocabulary list. As you incorporate more and more new vocabulary into your essay, it will start sticking in your brain, because you have actually used it to convey meaning, rather than just studied it as data. Also, try conversing in the language as much as possible while trying to incorporate the vocabulary as much as possible, either in class or with speakers of that language on the internet. Human interaction really fixes vocabulary and grammar into your brain like nothing else.

Do you have a free course that teach the basics of your methods more streamlined? For an example analogy, concepts is a free app that’s gives you all the basic tools to do all the basic things you can do, but paying the subscription or buying the essentials pack allows you to elevate and do way more. I want to get my feet wet first before deciding to invest in the full paid program if possible. Basically like a test drive before buying a 40 thousand dollar vehicle to see your first impressions of it before fully committing and investing. Edited or a basic course that’s more affordable to learn the basics before committing to the full program.

I can't seem to get this technique. No matter how much I seem to think I understand it I keep running into roadblocks. Like in chemistry when I tried to apply this technique to enthalpy changes I wasn't able to identify the major patterns easily. And when I thought I had it I mapped it out, I found another way of doing it then another and I wasn't sure which way was more or less correct. Then when it came to calculations I also found it hard to use relational learning to understand the process and often it made it more confusing. As when I wanted to use it in the Hess's Law area of enthalpy change I found trying to use the relationship between enthalpy change and Hess's law hard as although I understand the big picture of what the calculation is doing, I can't seem to use that and the connections to work out the method of calculating enthalpy changes from other enthalpy changes.

He uses flashcards for knowledge that you just have to retain/memorise no matter what....he uses mind maps way more often than flash cards because his course is focused on processing the information in your mind so it's encoded better, aka he's focused on teaching how to learn NOT how to "study".

@TBC1599
@TBC1599 2 года назад
@@kenia6969 No it is retrieval practice. Whilst the mind map will improve retention significantly if done correctly, you will inevitably forget things, particularly the finer details, so you need to keep practising to reinforce your learning. Justin doesn't place as much importance on active recall/spaced repetition, for good reasons, but he never said it wasn't useful at all.

this is probably the worst way to learn chemistry, and sort of the last resort when there is a reaction that you can absolutely not rationalize. What is more impotant is understanding the general role of the reagents in reactions, and classifiying them that way. CO2/H2O could be the product of several unrealted reactions, and using that as a way to remember is nothing better than rote memorization
