My mind is blown! You hit the nail on it's head! Perfect comparison!!! (BTW Funni Boi, he is referring to the fact that after the DreamCast Sega stopped producing hardware and makes there games on other consoles now. BlackBerry know longer makes their hardware.... they got deals TCL to produce hardware for them to apply there software. Perhaps one day BlackBerry may even make software for all Android phones and just be sold on the PlayStore? I could see that happening if the TCL deal doesn't hold up)
I have a pager assigned to me at my job. I only ever received pages from a computer about the status of various pieces of equipment. The computer that send out those pages broke more than a year ago, and so my pager sits with a dead battery on my desk:/
LOL, IKR ? I still remember how police would question teens about why they had a pager (like it was just slightly less criminal than a bag of drugs hanging out the back pocket).
I don't think we do. Video makers just do it to sound cool and informative and get kids to comment "hey! I know what that is!" Plus with Google there's no excuse not to know something. Just google it. Anyway, at the hospital where I get blood drawn they sometimes give out pagers to call you up when it's very crowded. So they are still in use in some places. Back when pagers were new mostly professionals had them. Like doctors who always had to be on call and stuff like that. But lots of guys thought they made them look cool and important. So you'd see guys with nothing going on walking around with pagers like they were big shots. And they were also used by drug dealers. So there was a bad element too. But guys thought they impressed girls.
RIM would charge you personally over the phone for tech support as well. That part sucked about the company. So in all I don't feel bad they are almost gone
Interesting video. Though I gotta say...I'm rather surprised you failed to mention the fact that BlackBerry's app store wasn't exactly tailored to the "average" consumer. In short, their app store was crap compared to Android and iPhone and they came to the party *way* too late. That's pretty much why I left BlackBerry back in 2010. I noticed most of my friends and coworkers had access to apps that I didn't. It was quite frustrating.
DiDi I feel you. My first smartphone was an Android, and I loved it.But I was on the family plan and when our contract was up, Dad went and got us all windows phones without consulting anyone. I hate it. I can't wait until I can switch to something better.
I really wish that physical keyboards become popular again, because using a touchscreen to type on a cheaper device is so horrible that it makes me want to go back to writing E-mails with my old 12 key flip phone. Yes, even the cheapest flip phone you can find has 3G, and there is probably a third party browser somewhere on the internet that will give it nearly full internet functionality.
Typing on a screen does take some getting used to and, I'll admit, they're not ALWAYS precise...however, I used keypads to type enough texts in years past to know that I will NEVER EVER EVER grow nostalgic for those days to return and, tbh, after having had enough practice using touchscreen keyboards, I find that I can type out messages, texts, e-mails and comments a LOT faster on one than I EVER was before, even back when I HAD a phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard... It's 2019, mate...time to get with the times! 😊😊😊😊
@@Karachi_lover993 i too have a blackberry somewhere in my house but it has touchscreen and keyboard at the same time i dont remember the name but i remember playing optimized minecraft on it and it isnt shown in the video
Pagers.... That brings back Jr. High School memories. Alien head stickers, ying yans, peace signs, jewel bellied trolls, Garbage Pale Kids cards, backpack patches, denim jacket bedazzling, Blossom hats, Trapper Keepers, body glitter, Lisa Franks.....
The problem BlackBerry had all the time is that they were so bad at marketing. Seriously take a Q10 and go through the menus you'll find everything you need including barcode reading (even aztec), file operations, adobe flash, android app support, network tools whatever you want but was buttery smooth at the same time! I was on a trip via Dubai at that time and BlackBerry had stores there in the mall where you could actually try them out and that was the first time I saw it and was instantly convinced and bought one.
Back in high school all my friends had blackberries, and I had an iPhone 3gs. I always thought blackberries were a stupid fad and always said they'd fail. No one believed me. When I asked why they had blackberries all they could say was "hurr durr BBM" or because cell companies gave them free with every plan. By the time I graduated I saw no one with a blackberry.
Filip Jakacki lol I'm guessing you went to high school from 08-12? Lol same thing happened with me. Everyone had a BlackBerry, everyone and by graduation everyone had iPhone.
Jay TS Great guess, you're correct. I knew the keyboard was gonna get replaced by the convenience of a touch screen, especially when you can rotate it and adjust key sizes to fit you. Oddly enough the last 3 phones I had were androids though, currently using a G5 as now iPhones can't compete spec wise to most flagship androids. Back than iPhone and Android specs were basically the same.
@@Torthrodhel It's a feature that works great WHEN it does as it's supposed to...but it CAN be annoying when your screen rotates simply because you set the phone down...😒
can u send as msg to others some phone numbers from your contacts list, the so called "send business card"? i got so frustrated by not having this option when i was using a bb
I don't remember this since I was 2 years old, but my mom was telling me that when the first iPhone came out she loved it and my dad (when he was working at Citrix) had an old Blackberry and he didn't want an iPhone. my mom LOVES Apple anyways and my dad is more of a Microsoft user, but he still has an iPhone and iPad.
PRIV owner and Blackberry Hardcore Fanboy here! im telling you the PRIV has been underrated as hell! its an amazing device. now i know it looks like im just plugging ears and screaming here but seriously. blackberry devices are the only ones still out there with an actual keyboard. and for guys like me that occasionally have to do server work out and about the hardware keys really make a difference in productivity. not to mention, while it was under hyped and under sold. the PRIV is actually on par with the samsung s6 that released the same year as far as raw power goes (i said on par, not identical) its no slouch as far as a phone goes. and everywhere i go all i hear about it is how badly it did. its like the dreamcast though too little too late...
mines been going a year strong and hasnt had any issues aside from the battery degradation youd expect from a daily use phone. its got warm a few times but the only time it ever overheated was when i played pokemon go. and i got out of that fad and went back to emulated gameboy games pretty quick
no, I waited a year before i got mine. (from release) i dont normally buy the first wave of anything as it almost always has issues. (xbox1disc issue, Nintendo switch random noises, apple iphone only supporting 2g net on release) and yea mines still kicking it. my battery is starting to become a bit weak but thats expected with a phone thats been in my pocket about a year. overall its been a tad quirky here and there like having to double click a contact sometimes or the keyboard back light going out randomly till the phone restarted (the process for it died) otherwise ive not had any issues. most of the stuff that has happened is android bugs rather than flaws in the phone. and i mean yea it warms up a real treat when you charge it. but its never overheated, or had any slowdowns from heat. im able to play games on it without issue as well but i usually dont. i have a PC and several arcade machines for that. that said. one of my friends locally got one and killed the charger on it within a year so mileage must vary.
As a person who's lived in two of the three cities in the KW Tri-city region (Waterloo and Kitchener), I think I can say that RIM/Blackberry was one of the things we had going for us. That and Kitchener being the second biggest Oktoberfest destination in the world. Sucks to see such an important part our recognition fall from such a great height.
If BB can get their act together, stop freaking around with changing CEO's like diapers, got some good developers and designers, keep their OS, they'd be kickass again. Hit me up💪🏽👆🏽
Inga Hicks what they need to do is copy the OnePlus model. Make a phone with awesome cutting edge hardware and software for dirt cheap ($350-$400). Make it exclusive with an invite system. In no time assholes will begging for invites to BUY the phone.
Honestly using Android was the best choice they made. The Keyone is absolutely fantastic. If you're at all interested in a physical keyboard, use one for 5 minutes and you'll be sold
Re-entering again to the mobile os will just result in a massive failure, what they have to do is just redesign their phone with high-end specs and advertised it good, if they use the old android G1 design I would certainly buy it....
Vayne Fox I'm actually content with them using the less demanding specs, because the battery life I'd absolutely unmatched. I'm a heavy user and I don't even have to plug my Keyone in at the end of the day. I do have to admit that I would love an ultra high speced Keyone though.
What I think really drew people to apple (and often what still does) is their whole ecosystem. If you have a Mac, get an iPhone, because in a lot of ways it's an extension of your Mac while still being its own device. And because devices are so easy to link and work together so well, you get massive brand loyalty. This is something that no other tech company has been able to do
I'm watching on my blackberry keyone, and I love this phone. Great battery life in an age of mediocre batteries, and nothing will ever beat the feel of a physical keyboard
Ira I slide mine often, so the screen play I think is just normal wear and tear. I don't really have an overheating problem unless I have a lot of stuff running at once
I LOVED BalckBerry back in the day and the 9900 was my last device until I switched to Android. The problem with BlackBerry was that they were too slow to released new devices whereas Apple and in particular Android were relaesing new models every couple months. Also, they took too long to boot up compared to Android and Apple and they were very glitchy. I remember having to reboot the device every so often whenver it would freeze or something. The thing was amazing to type on though and love the feel and look of it. Too bad they didn't adapt quick enough to changing times. That was their downfall, they failed to adapt soon enough and adopt their competitors technology.
Uygar Ramos Oztas Yeah, this video didn't really achieve acknowledge that BBM was a huge part of Blackberry's popularity in Europe, especially for the younger, non-business demographic.
The Blackberry KEYone was fairly successful and the KEY2 is off to a very good start. The stock has gone from $9.99 per share as of June 2017 to the current price of $12.54 as of 6/6/2018. Mabye this could be called the rise, fall and rise of Blackberry. Also the new phones they're making (KEYone, KEY2, Motion (to some extent)) are some of the best I've seen.
I loved my old black and white BlackBerry (Looked just like the 7200, but neither in color, nor as "high resolution"). The battery life was amazing (Think weeks, not hours), unlimited internet, apps like IM+ which let me use AIM, Gtalk, and MSN Messenger. Even had a back-light for when it was needed. It was great!
I still remember one of the last Blackberry ads I saw on TV. Maybe it was for the Bold. The announcer went something like: "Blackberry, yes Blackberry." But he said it all really quickly because that's the point where consumer trust was eroding fast.
Twistr I m planning to buy Blackberry Keyone. I've used Bold 9700 9780. I m a fan of physical keyboard instead of a 1500 $ Xpensive Iphone. Right now using iphone 6 Enough of 1000$ bs of apple
Kim Jong Ding Dong the iPhone is $1000 dude, not $1500. Plus you don't have to buy the iPhone X since you already have the 6 which is almost as good, so why even complain?
BB is still the king of E2E encryption and was a pioneer of all you can eat data plans, especially international data plans so that your BB would work overseas on business trips. The carrier markets are just now finally at the same level where BB was 10 years prior. If all you need is a PIM (email, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, phone) and no interest in any other apps, then BB is still the best of market with devices which can last DAYS on a single charge.
My first smartphone was a BlackBerry Storm. What a raving piece of shit. I actually broke my contract, paid and ETF and went to AT&T so I could get the BlackBerry Bold and never again deal with that Storm. What a great move that was.
Soumen Bhattacharya: Right. All they cater to is the iPhone. I have an iPhone 8 myself, and this will be my last one once I pay it off. Tired of spending so money on a phone that’ll end up being slow or obsolete in a short period of time. Yet my windows desktop from 2010 still works fine. *Sigh* Once people stop buying iPhones altogether, Apple’s business model is doomed to fail. Just like BlackBerry.
I got the classic one, great to have spotify there and messaging is a breeze. I just accepted the fact that getting a BB phone running in BB OS is like getting a device with no warranty, no one here repairs BB directly.
You may want to revisit this. Blackberry is starting to make a comeback, and has gotten rave reviews with the KeyOne, and is even making it's first rugged phone with the motion. Blackberry is alive and kicking.
That's why I have a Blackberry Android phone! I'm glad they still make them, as they seem to be the only Android phones that are still made with physical keyboards
No, I went from a Blackberry Torch to iPhone to Android to Windows Phone back to Android and then got a Z10....I was offered a great deal on a Q10 so I took it. I found myself typing REALLY quickly on it in no time.....despite having used full touchscreen devices for about 5 or 6 years, the Q10 was SO easy to get back into using a physical keyboard. Just like with games...I don't want to play FPS games on a touchscreen phone or Sonic the Hedgehog on a touchscreen, I prefer physical buttons...
We had some Blackberry phones at work once. The stupid things were a pain to set up, so now we have iPhones which are maddening to keep operational for different reasons.
What was left out was the secure servers which were the heart of the Blackberry system and more secure than anything at the time. Security was the reason for the success particularly in the finance sector. This was undermined by several server outages and hacks of the servers, undermining the security and the raisin d’etre of Blackberry.
I remember that when I was very young about 7 years ago I had an old blackberry bold. It was broken and the battery was forever dead but I would play around with it and stuff. So yeah this video brings back some old memories.
Still use my blackberry passport in 2018. Signal wise I have had nothing better. Rock solid performance, no lag and by far and away the most enjoyable phone to use I've had. Such a shame they lost touch with the ever changing industry...
Feb 2018 and Blackberry is stil here,,I just got new B10 on Amazon for 120$ ,,great battery life, great security,,good keyboard,,nothing else comes close to BB.
Technology in disguise : android n appleAnd people still love it! Love being tracked! Love when their every footstep n activity is tracked! Interesting!!!
I had a playbook. It was fucking fantastic. It had zero each iCal issues until the end of it's life where all WiFi functionality and camera use disappeared. The only other downside was that it had a lack of apps and only came with the RU-vid video app. Where the only function was watching RU-vid videos and searching them. No subscribe, no comments, couldn't even browse channels.
I’m more intrigued with the trackball phones. You could probably “hack” one of those blackberries and add windows 95 or something like that, and you could use the built-in trackball to move the mouse cursor, and the keyboard as, well, a keyboard. I want to try that sometime.
Well in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Apple set up Shop and hired former BlackBerry employee and co-founder of QNX Dan Dodge, They are working on autonomous cars as well using"Blackberry/QNX tech" It would surprise me the next Apple IOS will be a QNX type true multitasking beast!
I had a BlackBerry knockoff phone and I remember never being able to type when I had long nails because they would always hit the keys next to the ones I needed lol
I still got my Blackberry Priv from Dec 9 2015 and i had a Blackberry Z10 before, i like the phone as they seem solid to me, and i didn't have a many problems as i did with my other phone before.
Kind of off topic but years and years ago I knew this lady who worked for our church who had a BlackBerry. She wore an ear piece that went with it constantly while at work. She almost never used it, I think she just thought it made her look cool. After several years straight of wearing it she developed a very rare form of ear cancer in the same ear she wore it. I understand the laws of probability and that it may have just been a coincidence, but the other half of my brain wonders Howe safe those early cell phones really were.
