I attended a church that was a mini-Mars Hill. Spiritual bullying and abuse is so real and very sad. We left, but my heart goes out to many dear friends who are not only part of, but promote toxic church culture.

There is so much to learn from the Mars Hill story and Mike did the world a favor by covering it. Humility is a trait that doesn't get much appreciation in our American culture. We seem to gravitate to people who look act so self assured when what we should do is realize that they are as flawed as we are and we should be watchful to see that we don't fall prey to their weaknesses. One very big sign of something amiss is if someone says, "God spoke to me...". Run away fast if you hear that!

Listen to the entire podcast and what Pastor Driscoll did to people who didn't agree with him was stunning. No one took Driscoll down. He took himself down.

I’m a bit late to this conversation, but I started watching this episode a few weeks ago and paused to go listen to Mike’s podcast and, oh boy am I glad I did! It was so well done. It was informational, educational, not gossipy, and honoring of people’s experiences. Now I feel like this episode will make much more sense! 🙂

I loved this series…. I came to Christ around this time, Driscoll was huge to my college buddies we went to hear his preaching in person…. I’ve been deconstructing for a couple years and just seeing this as a history of my faith in a way…. I remember the sea shells…. But to see some of the ideas especially in marriage that took root and the pain in some cases it caused

The Mars Hill podcasts have blown me away and have confirmed so many things that I have experienced in the church. The bullying is real! However I didn't take any sh!% from anyone so they were unable to phase or control my family. Would anybody know if a feature movie or documentary have been produced?

The thing to learn is that we need to run a church according to God's principals in the New Testament, one of which is primarily having a group of qualified elders. Mark was a guy with gifts but not the character and maturity to match it. I doubt that he had a group of older, more mature who were qualified as elders that could be over him. Joshua server under Moses for 40 before he led Israel.

Does anyone know the book mentioned around minute 13? I'm a single mom struggling to raise 3 good Christian boys.
@edr2915
@edr2915 2 года назад
Richard Rohr's From Wild Man to Wise Man. Rohr also wrote Adam's Return and Soul Brothers. These are great, but may not be place to begin with young boys. Also consider: The Complete Guide to Living with Men, or Life Passages for Men, both by Dr. Jim Wilder. Best of all may be a wonderful little book that provides practical skills, not just theory, for all parents looking to foster maturity: The 4 Habits of Raising Joy-Filled Kids: A Simple Model for Developing Your Child's Maturity -- at Every Stage. May you find mature elders to support you on this journey!!!

You said 3 good Christian boys. Amen to that. I have one boy gonna be 5. I can tell what a challenge it is. That's a good sign we are concerned for their souls. All I want to say is that we can only do so much but at the end we are left to fall face down at the feet of God and trust him for their lives. Sister my heart goes out to you as many times I wonder as to why God gave a boy when all I want is a girl. My wife too makes it sound most of the time that it is my headache to deal with his boy/man traits. Please consider the book Shepherding a child's heart by Paul Tripp. It's purlely a book takes us back to gospel. Besides I pray that they get to look up to some godly men if not know that Timothy was raised by two women and no man to be around. Yes we can trust God and I pray that you would rejoice in the future for all your toil as mother and for your boys who would be salt and light to many and praise God for your life.

It appears that complementarianism is - at best - a school of thought. It certainly does not rise to the level of a theology. You acknowledge that this school of thought can be quite toxic - and it is. And then you blow by it to talk about what you want to talk about. Have you considered some podcasts on this problem? Consider using Beth Moore's letter to the brothers as a start.

Rise and fall of Mars Hill was intense, but cmon, rise and fall of hillsong and Carl Lentz would make it look like a joke. I doubt Christianity today would ever do one on hillsong though seeing both are progressive.

I am obsessed with TRAFOMH. I have listened to several episodes MANY times. It strikes me that if Driscoll had just NOT done a few things, MH might still be a thing: 1) Not firing Bent and Paul 2) Not doing the Strange Fire stunt (which lead to the Mefferd interview and opened up all the plagiarism claims) 3) Not going down the Real Marriage road (as several ppl begged him not to) Of course, the financials were always going to be tough, but it's interesting to ponder...

Church is essentially built around a single individual. That's the business model of the seminary system, and before that you exclusively had singular bishops. Christians don't organize like a colony of ants with an equal voice among members. It is ultimately a one-man show at the end of the day. There's no getting around that in the history of Christianity. Nowadays, the internet and social media has made the problem a whole lot worse by amplifying the voice of the one man show pastor even louder than ever before. Until Christianity finds a way to completely reorganize its fundamental structure, I don't see any of this changing any time soon.

Enjoyed the series. However disappointed you use non-Christian’s who do not hold to the truth of scripture to point out what was wrong. Why not use scripture to refute what was wrong. Why use Kristen Kobes Du Mez?

Regarding MacArthur, I always felt that Driscoll was (in some ways) a slightly younger version of MacArthur. I do think that Driscoll was getting better in some ways near the end - as in some of his excesses were being curbed.

MacArthur having insight is a great example of an established Lion speaking out against the competition and recognizing easily seen public moral failings.. ones that he himself has been better at hiding

@@WGPower_Nonchalant_Cafe MacArthur is the first to admit he cannot live up to the Biblical teachings of his sermons. He does not hide from it, but the comparison? Really? Did MacArthur’s elders report abuses? Sure is well hidden!

The podcast seemed kind of ridiculous in certain ways. Lol like what in the world is up with the haunting background music???? Am I listening to a cold case podcast? Also, there's a lack of biblical reference and critique which is typical of Christianity today. Also, Christianity today always has a bone to pick with pastors that are "reformed" but will speak softly about more progressive pastors that's why we'll never see Christianity today do a special on the rise and fall of hillsong, Brian Houston, and Carl Lentz.
@davvvis9296
@davvvis9296 2 года назад
its just background music. why would you think it's haunting? its just soft background music to add to the quality of the production. nothing new there. also its not a theological podcast so thers no need for biblical references. if you use a little common sense you can tell that most of the abuse he talks about is not biblical anyway. he is just narrating events that unfolded not preaching from the bible. what is your point?
@htht856
@htht856 2 года назад
@@davvvis9296 so essentially it's entertainment for you, ok. Also, it's my opinion dude, is that offensive to you? I think the music is cheezy and I disagree, it could've been a theological podcast, but I can't imagine Christianity today knowing to make it theological. We all could've learned a lot about this from the perspective of the Bible. In my opinion, they can redeem themselves by doing a rise and fall of hillsong, Brian Houston, and Carl Lentz, but I know they're all Christianity today's buddies, so who knows if that'll happen.
@davvvis9296
@davvvis9296 2 года назад
it's more informative than entertaining but like with any podcast or any medium, production quality is very important. also it sounds like you're just biased against CT so if you approach it with that mindset nothing I can say will convince you of any different. I would like to see them expose other churches and leaders to keep believers more informed and weary. but until they explicitly refuse to do that I'm going to hold off judging them for it. I for one, am glad they exposed this abuse going on so I can be a more informed believer. whether they release more podcasts about other churches or not doesn't change the facts of what happened with Mark Driscoll.
