The good BMS:

I got this same kit on eBay for cheaper, but here is the amazon link if you are interested. I really don't recommend it though.

I'm not sponsored by them at all, but I think they are still a great website:

Battery technician here, though you've used a BMS and checked the voltage of the cells, you've forgotten to check to capacity of the separate cells. The parallel groups need to be the same total capacity for the pack to properly function. An imbalance might occur after a couple of cycles. Your best option is to charge the pack fully until the BMS cuts off and then manually charge the parallel groups that aren't 4.2V up to 4.2V. During discharge the weakest parallel group will cause the BMS to cut off early, but during charging everything will be nicely balanced once the pack reaches 42V again. This prevents overcharging of a single group, as those BMS's often only cut off at 4.28V.

Good point. What is the best method of checking battery capacity?
@Beeeeeeeeeee
@Beeeeeeeeeee 3 года назад
@@TannerTech If you're just matching cells and don't care about knowing the actual capacity you could discharge a cell with a 4 ohm resistor and note the time taken to reach 3V. Do this with all the cells. Then take (if you're making a 7 cells in series 24V pack) 7 cells with similar discharge times, those are now the first cells in the 7 Parallel-groups. The next 7 cells should be the second cell of the P groups. If you start getting too much variation to get another 7 cells you can do the average of 2 cells also, adding 14 cells to the pack at a time.

@@Beeeeeeeeeee yeah, you can discharge them any way you want as long as you keep the variables the same, then you can compare them equally

When you flipped the board and the surface mount components were missing I have to admit I about spit my coffee out! 😂 thanks for taking the time to show everything.

Hey Tanner, You did a great job of building that e bike and its battery. Great video editing too. Hope you can get a better motor to replace that little chain drive unit. Keep up the great videos!

I had a motor exactly like that one that I ground the sprocket thinner on to use the derailer on it and was able to feed it 2000 watts at 68 volts and it worked well without failure.

Great job, there is so much more work making a pack than most people think. I just made 4 x 80 packs for my kayaks each with its own fuse so 320 fuses haha.

I did something similar, except I used a weedwacker engine. It was extremely fast for its size. At some point I started running nitrous oxide from a whipped cream bottle and it was even faster. It was so fun until the shaft on the engine sheared off 😅

Imagine now with the hub motors where the motor is in the wheel

I once saw a guy trying to DIY Ebike his bike with only 50€. He used a conventional cordless drill with exchangable batteriemodules. He fixated the drill behind the seat onto a plate and just run down a additional chain to the backweel with an extra gear down there. Left everything other the same. So pretty simmilar to what you did. Just without the need of a special motor or motor controll. Then some Trigger mechanism to the front, and it worked pretty well ngl.

Cool! did his bike go very fast?

That freewheel is the same as many bicycles, you should be able to get that swapped out with a nicer one at a bicycle shop, you could even change the gearing

Thanks for the advice. I am also thinking of using the motor for other things as well

Hey Tanner i have some questions for you involving building a xenon strobe circuit with a high flash frequency or modifying an existing circuit to flash faster how can i reach you to discuss this you are very good at explaining things so id love if i could get your help
@TannerTech
@TannerTech 3 года назад
Hey Stormy! I might be creating a channel email just for things like this. When I do, it will probably be in the description of a future video. As for creating high frequency strobes: I have recently been reading a book by former MIT professor Harold Edgerton about that very concept. I may make a video about xenon strobes in the near future.

What ?... You can't fix it ?? Also no data about the larger battery ride/test...
@TannerTech
@TannerTech 3 года назад
I will be able to fix it, I just thought this would be a funny ending. The larger battery got me 6 miles before the motor broke, and it still had 39.5 volts left, which probably could have gotten me another 15 or so miles

I've wanted to build one of these for a while I just don't make a ton at my current job and don't know where to start
@TannerTech
@TannerTech 3 года назад
Yeah, I feel that. I started by just taking apart junk from the side of the road and using those parts for my projects when I had hardly any money. Once I started growing on youtube, the ad revenue really helped fund my projects. I now work a job where I get to build circuits full time, which helps fund even more projects. My recommendation is just take apart old TVs and other things for parts. It is suprising how many projects you can build. Good luck John, you got this!

@@TannerTech Thanks Tanner! I’m buying a used Gas engine, compete with all the parts to hook up to my road bike, this week. It’s gonna be awesome. Come out to PA sometime and we’ll race 🤣

Those are 18650 cells? Do you have really small hands? 😅 Most expensive part of an ebike, next to the motor, might as well not even bother getting a bike and just glue a seat to a child's skateboard, 😂 I wondered how long that 3d printed part might last for, also what stops people stealing your batteries? Maybe a slip or clutch to stop the gear being over torqued?
@TannerTech

I know! I got all the parts to build the battery for about $60, so it was a great deal!
