A non-violent freedom fighter? A war crimes apologist? Or is she something in between? Aung San Suu Kyi’s decades-long, non-violent struggle for democracy made her a hero around the world. But once appointed to office, many say her leadership, has been disappointing.

Born on June 19th, 1945, in what was then Rangoon, Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was destined to be defiant from the start.
Her father was none other than Aung San -- the former military general who negotiated Burma’s independence from the British in 1947. He became known as a national hero, and the founder of modern-day Myanmar, which was then known as Burma.
But in 1947, when Suu Kyi was just 2 years old, everything changed. Her father was assassinated by a rival politician.
She went on to graduate from high school in 1964, and then studied with the global elite at Oxford University. There she met her to-be husband. Years later they settled in the United Kingdom, where they had two sons.
During this time, Suu Kyi continued to watch as her country was sinking further into dictatorship.
After nationwide protests against the one-party rule and the military dictatorship culminated in what later became known as the 8/8/88 Uprising protesters were in search of a leader. They looked to the then 43-year-old Suu Kyi to fill the shoes of her father -- as a fighter for Burmese democracy.
And that’s exactly what she did.
But what was her journey to leadership and what would she do once she achieved her goal? And what would her leadership mean for the Rohingya in Rakhine state and the alleged ethnic cleansing was taking place in Myanmar?

As someone who lived in Myanmar, this video misses a few key points about the state of Burmese politics and the 2008 constitution. While the military is guaranteed 25% of seats in parliament by the constitution, it also retained control of the ministries of home affairs, defense, and border affairs. This means they control both the police and the military. Aung San Suu Kyi has little to no influence over those forces. The state of Rakhine is also one of the few in Myanmar that is not controlled by Aung San Suu Kyi’s party so she holds no influence over political or military matters in that state. It is easy to say that she is in the wrong, but in reality, what can she really do? Yes, she could (and probably should) speak out about the atrocities in Rakhine when she is abroad, but there is almost nothing she can do domestically. I am not saying she is innocent but the world has glossed over the current complexities of Myanmar’s government to find her as the face of the genocide.

@Jacqueles Twali Although western countries' governments & HRW organizations are pushing her for her acknowledgement & announcement for Myanmar military brutal crackdown in Rakhine state, the fact that she did not voice any blaming words towards Myanmar military's action in Rakhine state although she doesn't like nor approve the way Myanmar military handled is that she is infect trying to push for very difficult obhective of stopping the decades-long civil war with many ethnic groups and to push for nation-wide peace process which is vital for the country's future. But much of the world doesn't know that she and elected government president has no authority to command Myanmar military which is specifically granted special permission and separate power organization under 2008 Constitution. In order for her to stop the suffering of people from civil wars through out the country, she has no choice but to negotiate with the military leader which is standing as separate power organization apart from president & parliment to stop fighting with ethnic armed groups. If she somehow blame separate entity military organization, the country reconciloation & peace process will more hinder which is currently at road blocked with many of the ethnic states strongly distrust the military which is not under the control of central quasi-democracy government. Therefore, instead of blaming & pointing fingers as western countries' desire, she has chosen to sacrifice her name, fame & herself for her country's peaceful future by trying to reconcile the armed conflict between the country's out-of-contol military organization and ethnic groups, and to heed for her words for peace process. The actual facts that most of the people do not know: 1. Although Myanmar is transitioned to democracy, the 2008 constitution was specially prepared by previous military dictator regime which allows military to stand as separate organization not to be commanded by country president. Only the senior general can control and command the military. 2. Military general will directly appoint 25% of the seats in all parliments of Myanmar (both central and all states/regional parliments); not by people vote. 3. If elected government wants to change the law, mostly it needs >75% of vote in parliment so basically the elected government cannot change the laws or do anything without military approval. 4. The 2008 Constitution allows military General not only control the military itself but also all the armed forces of Myanmar; therefore the country's police force is under the direct authority of the Military; not by the president.

This kind of video is precisely why I tend to avoid western (especially american) sources on international matters. As many have pointed out in the comments, she never really had too much power to begin with. Myanmar was more of an experimental democracy rather than a real functioning democratic state. Military still controls at least 25% of the seats (as part of a constitutional law) and have entire control over several factions of the government, including internal security. The video falls on its face when dealing with the complexity of the issue. As usual, everything is analyzed and understood through the highly biased lens of american ideology and it just ends up vomiting a useless speech that doesn't really gets us any closer to understanding the situation.

“…. Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson explains what is really happening in Burma/Myanmar and why it is relevant to us. On February 1, the Burmese military took over the country, nullifying the results of a fraudulent election from November which had installed liberal, color revolutionary, media darling Aung San Suu Kyi. From a westernized, very wealthy family, Kyi was educated in the west and serves the CIA and the Soros-banker fronts explicitly. In the aftermath of the November 8 elections, the color revolutionaries allegedly won 396 out of 476 seats in parliament, cutting the military-based parties from political relevance. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) insists that the CIA and its local agents rigged the elections, citing 10.5 million cases of irregularities. These have led to mass protests in all major states and cities of the country. The purpose of this fraudulent election is to enshrine liberalism over the political life of the country, which is a way to pull Burma out of its pro-China policy. More broadly, the point is to break the development of the New Silk Road project, a multi-trillion dollar, anti-liberal infrastructure project unifying the Eurasian plain against the west. If liberalism has the IMF, the WTO and Davos as its institutional representatives, the anti-liberal movement has the New Silk Road. The coup against liberalism in Burma has immense geopolitical consequences few realize…..”

The problem with the reporting of Suu Kyi is that people assume that the NLD has the power to do what it wants. They cannot. The military would overthrow them at a seconds notice if given the opportunity. The country’s security forces are therefore free to conduct a campaign to deliberately undermine her on the world stage by imprisoning journalists and conducting a major genocide - or at least allowing paramilitary groups to. I’m not sure if - given she has no real power to stop it - it is worth praising her for bringing democracy to Myanmar and I’m certainly not sure that remaining silent and not taking a stand and bidding her time is the right decision, but I do believe that she has been badly misunderstood and the calls to strip her of her Noble Peace Prize are misguided and will give the military what it wants, her government damage.

As mentioned in this video multiple times, she was given unimaginable choices throughout her political career, and the Rohingya crisis was one of them. She never held the power to command the military, but she took the blame because she was the leader of the government at the time on paper. And as always, she made the difficult decision to not go up against the military generals which would have resulted in another coup. She chose to keep one hand on the wheel to steer instead of letting go of both hands. If you think this is some bs, just look at what happened on Feb 1st, 2021. Another military coup the day before the parliament was due to swear in the NLD members who won the 2020 election by a landslide. The generals are still in complete control of the military. But fortunately for burmese people, everything she sacrificed and faced, which would break a normal person hundred times over, are for the country and its people, not for a prize.

It took her over two decades to win her fight to end military rule in Myanmar, and now that she's in power to rule the country, she doesn't want to do anything that risks her being disposed. This is not a justification for what she's allowed since coming to power of course; just an explanation for why she may be governing the way she is.

I'm a Burmese and after seeing this documentary, I feel very disappointed to be point out to our leader. We have been under our own government for over 50 years by so called "Military". And many people died and sacrifices for their life to get freedom for Aung San Su Kyi who is a daughter of General Aung San. She brings peace and democracy which we didn't have since President U Thein Sain (Military). Falls for her would be the trash she have to face that the last government had left. She have to clean those trash while other military based party people want to rebel against her to get military back. So I don't want any of those cold war within our country and being tortured by military so called "Union Solidarity and Development Party" for a long year since my grandparent's parent. The generation from Union Solidarity and Development Party people are not willing to win Aung San Su Kyi 'cause they are afraid that their freedom and trade will stop and their money income will close. So I don't want people from the world to see Daw Aung San Su Kyi as a bad leader, instead she is fixing the country fault by those people from Union Solidarity and Development Party. Thank you.

We just gained our democractic rights just 4years ago and change will take a very long time for things to go right. Not to mention the remainings of the military junta that ruled burma with an iron fist since 1960 still has 25 percent of the power by default and the votes given to the party isnt even included yet. We are not just accpecting the democractic government as powerless either. In 2005, I went to Burma on two week holiday. During sightseeing tour of Rangoon, I told my guide to show me the house of The Lady who was under house arrest. The guide turned pale, looked terrified and didn't take me near her house.

Aung San Suu Kyi, once idolized by many for her activism when she was imprisoned by the then-oppressive government, has now had her reputation tarnished after her lack of response to the Rohingya humanitarian crisis of Myanmar in 2017. Many universities and colleges worldwide have removed her name from awards or merits, Bob Geldof returned an award he shared with her in protest, and petitions to impeach her and remove her Nobel Peace Prize have taken off
@Gajcia

All those defending her - have you not heard her PUBLIC statements which amount to hate speech against the Rohingya population? She knows her words have an impact and that’s how she chooses to use said impact. It’s not about whether the Junta still holds real power - of course it does. It’s about a ‘non violence icon’ contributing immensely to a genocidal climate.

Norway and Sweden both pushed the prizes for propaganda purposes that has blown up in their faces time and time again. Worse was 1968 when Sweden's central bank "donated" a "large sum" of money to hand out prizes in economics to celebrate their 300th anniversary. A. Nobel specifically wrote that he did not want to give prizes in economics because it is too akin to philosophy with very little objectivity and predictive capacity therefore can be used to demagoguery/propaganda toward a person not the science or philosophy discovered. Nobel left out mathematics, it would have made sense to add that one. But nope. Economics instead. I wonder why?

I live in Myanmar. Most muslims supported her. But as soon as she won the election many mosques in Meikhtila city were burned down by Buddhist extremists. Many muslims man women children were killed and burned. In Yangon an Islamic school caught on fire and many children who are student died in that fire. The two Islamic teachers were arrested for that incident. Rohingya were pretty much kicked out from the country. Now that Muslim Arkans are gone from Rakhine state the Burmese military is now fighting with Buddhists Arkans known as "AA". Her position of state councilor was created by a muslim attorney from NLD party named U Ko Ni. He was gunned down by an assassin in January 2017 at Yangon international airport. All the mosques that were destroyed during meikhtila crisis were still closed and not allowed to reopen. ...... Aung San Su Kyi has been silent on all the above incidents. Maybe she's doing something good in silent. But hey i no longer trust any political parties whether it is Military or NLD muslims are always expendable. Trust me... when there is no muslim left in Myanmar they, the Buddhists, will kill each other. It's all about power.... @Kleco102 My thoughts exactly, when I started to dig in more about situation. Myanmar army is responsible. Myanmar army is still unruly. However I have another question, why actions of Rohingya extremists who are influenced by news of success of ISIS attacked police installations and raped burmies women aren't counted ? Aren't both Myanmar army and Rohingya extremists responsible for whole crisis ?

Here is my interpretation of what happened: as she became a symbol of democracy & change, the military government realize they’re outnumbered and they cannot stop the NLD movement. So they offered her a position which had no real power. I think she knew that at the time, but decided to accept it because on paper it seems like a victory at the time. Once she obtained this position, albeit with no real power - she and the military government was then on the same team. Thus she refused to publicly denounce the existing government. So I don’t think she is explicitly an “evil” leader. But I do feel that she took a more cowardly “win” than the bravery that she was so idolized and rewarded her prior to taking the political government position.

I have no respect for the Noble Peace Prize and ALL of its winners. The nomination and selection of the winners are very arbitrary. So often they are awarded to the so-called "Human Rights" fighters. In reality, the world peace has almost nothing to do with the "Human Rights".

Myanmar is an underdeveloped country and there are many problems in different sectors; in politics, economics, education, health etc. As a leader of such a poor country, which is trying to stand on the road of democracy, she needs to think in different perspectives/angles- not just one side so that our country doesn't fall back to rule of the old government. We, the majority of Myanmar citizens who want Democracy, believe in her. We have faith in her. Please judge when you do know her situation. Please ask yourself how much you know about Myanmar before you judge? ( P.S We respect your concern about our country and care for Rohingya in Rakhine, thanks.)

Aung San Suu Kyi literally proved the adage "...think globally.. act locally...". I think her conscious stand on rohinga issue was in the long-term interest of Myanmar. Future will show that her critical decision in fact justified the spirit of Nobel peace prize. The potential of perpetual violence in Myanmar will be less than it would have been. She proved herself a patriot who sacrificed her personal interests in favor of her country.
